If you have measured what an animal actually drank over 24 hours, it will show you where that figure sits relative to the published range.

Water intake is not something to be managed to a number at home — healthy animals with free access to clean water regulate their own intake — and a meaningful change in how much an animal drinks is information for your veterinary surgeon, not a prompt to change what is in the bowl.
What This Pet Water Intake Calculator Does
The Merck Veterinary Manual's page on the nutritional requirements of small animals states that in a thermoneutral environment most mammalian species need approximately 44 to 66 mL of water per kilogram of bodyweight daily. This tool applies both ends of that published range to the weight you enter and converts the result into the units you are likely to be measuring in.
It also reports the same range as cups, using a cup size you set yourself, because "cups" means different things in different kitchens and a fixed conversion would quietly introduce error. And it puts any measured 24-hour intake on the same bar chart as the two published bounds, so the comparison is visual rather than a verdict.

How to Use It
- Enter the bodyweight in kilograms or pounds, using the figure from the animal's last weigh-in rather than an estimate.
- Read both ends of the range. The published figure is a band roughly fifty percent wide, and treating either end as "the" number misrepresents it.
- Set the cup size to whatever you are actually measuring with, so the cups figure means something.
- Optionally enter a measured 24-hour intake. Measuring properly means a known volume in, the remainder measured out, and no other water sources available — which is harder than it sounds.
- Take a changed pattern to your vet. The useful signal is a change from what an individual animal normally does, and that is a clinical conversation.
The Numbers and How They're Calculated
The arithmetic is deliberately plain. Lower bound = bodyweight in kg × 44 mL. Upper bound = bodyweight in kg × 66 mL.
Working the default values through: a 20 kg dog gives 20 × 44 = 880 mL at the lower end and 20 × 66 = 1,320 mL at the upper end. At a 240 mL cup that is roughly 3.7 to 5.5 cups a day, or about 29.8 to 44.6 US fluid ounces. Pounds are converted first at 0.45359237 kilograms per pound, so a 44 lb dog is treated as 19.96 kg and lands in effectively the same place.
Nothing else is applied. There is no activity multiplier, no weather multiplier and no food-type adjustment, because publishing one would mean inventing coefficients that the source does not give and presenting a number as a target the reader should hit.
Water From Food Is Part of the Total
This is the single biggest reason a measured bowl figure can look wrong when nothing is wrong. The Merck manual notes that the moisture content of food substantially affects drinking behaviour: wet food runs from about 60 to 87 percent moisture, dry kibble from about 3 to 11 percent. An animal eating tinned food is taking in a large share of its water with its meals, and its bowl consumption will be correspondingly lower than an otherwise identical animal on dry food.
The published 44 to 66 mL/kg figure describes total water requirement, not bowl drinking. That distinction matters when comparing a measured figure against it: if you measure only what came out of the bowl, you are measuring part of the total. Research bears this out from the other direction — a study of total water intake and urine measures of hydration in adult dogs, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, recorded total water intakes around 71 mL/kg per day in dogs drinking tap water, above the top of the maintenance band. Different measurement, different number, neither one wrong.
Why This Page Sets No Target
Water intake is one of the few things an owner can observe at home that carries genuine clinical weight, and it carries it in both directions. Drinking much less than usual and drinking much more than usual are each recognised signs that something warrants investigation, and the conditions behind them are not things to be managed by adjusting a bowl. That is why the Merck guidance is explicit that healthy animals given ample water self-regulate, and that intake should not generally be restricted.
A calculator that produced a target invites exactly the wrong response: topping up to reach a number, or worse, cutting back to reach one. The clinically useful observation is not "is this animal drinking 1,100 mL" but "is this animal drinking noticeably differently from how it drank last month". Only you can see the second one, and only your vet can work out what it means.
Measuring Intake Properly Is Harder Than It Looks
A 24-hour measurement is only meaningful if every water source is accounted for. That means a measured volume into the bowl, the remainder measured back out, and no other drinking — no other bowls, no toilet, no pond, no puddles, no water fountain, and no other animals sharing the bowl. In a multi-pet household a single-animal figure is often impossible without separating animals, which brings its own problems.
Evaporation is a real confounder over 24 hours, especially from a wide shallow bowl in a warm room, and it inflates the apparent intake. Spillage does the same. A single day is also a small sample: normal day-to-day variation is considerable, and a three or five day average tells you far more than any one day. If your vet has asked you to measure, they will usually tell you how they want it done — that instruction beats anything on this page.
What This Number Cannot Tell You
The published range describes healthy adult animals in a comfortable environment. It does not describe animals in hot weather, animals doing sustained work, growing animals, animals that are pregnant or nursing, or animals with any condition that affects fluid balance. All of those legitimately sit outside the band, and none of them are handled here.
It also cannot assess hydration. Whether an animal is actually hydrated is judged clinically, on the animal, using signs a formula has no access to. A figure inside the published range is not reassurance, and a figure outside it is not a diagnosis. Both are observations to report, and your veterinary surgeon is the only person who can interpret them for your animal.
