Housing, bedding, enrichment, company and everything else that makes an enclosure suitable are matters for your veterinary surgeon and the welfare guidance for that species.
What This Pet Enclosure Size Calculator Does
Choose a species and the number of animals, and the tool returns the published minimum floor area with its source named. Enter the length and width of the enclosure you are planning and it shows both as bars so the comparison is immediate. For rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters the published figures are written for a specific group size, and the tool tells you plainly when it has scaled that figure proportionally for a different number of animals rather than quoting a published value.
Rats are handled differently because the available published figure is written differently. The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals gives floor area per animal by body weight for group-housed rats — 17 square inches under 100 g rising to at least 70 square inches over 500 g, at a cage height of 7 inches. That is a laboratory housing minimum written for research facilities, not a pet welfare recommendation, and it should be read as the absolute floor rather than as a description of good pet housing.
Boundary worth stating: this page is about small-animal floor area. How to Use It
- Select the species and read the source note under the selector. It names the body the figure comes from and what group size the figure was written for.
- Enter how many animals will live in the enclosure. Watch for the note telling you when the published figure has been scaled rather than quoted.
- For rats, choose the weight band. The published allowance is per animal by weight, so it changes as the animals grow.
- Enter the usable floor dimensions of the enclosure you are considering, in centimetres or inches. Measure the inside, not the outside of the frame.
- Read the two bars together. They show the published minimum and your plan on the same scale, which is more informative than a single percentage.
The Figures and Where They Come From
Rabbits. The RSPCA's guidance on creating a good home for rabbits recommends, for two medium-sized rabbits, a living space no smaller than 3 m by 2 m and 1 m high, taking the main shelter and the exercise area together. That is 6 square metres, or about 64.6 square feet, for a pair — and it is a combined figure, not a hutch dimension.
Guinea pigs. The RSPCA Australia knowledgebase states that a pair of guinea pigs should have an enclosure of at least 2 m by 0.5 m, which is 10,000 square centimetres or 1 square metre, and at least 30 cm in height. It also notes that rectangular enclosures suit guinea pigs better than square ones.
Hamsters. The PDSA's guidance on the ideal home for your hamster gives a minimum floor space of 100 cm by 50 cm, citing the German veterinary animal welfare association, with enough depth to hold at least 25 cm of bedding for burrowing. It is explicit that this is a minimum and that bigger is better, and that single-level enclosures suit hamsters better than tall multi-level ones.
Working the default values through: two rabbits give a published minimum of 6 m². An enclosure planned at 300 cm by 200 cm is 60,000 cm², which is 6 m² exactly, so the plan and the published minimum come out at 100 percent of each other.
Why Scaling a Figure for More Animals Is Not Simple
If guidance gives 6 square metres for two rabbits, it does not follow that three rabbits need 9. Space requirements do not scale linearly with numbers, because a large part of what the space is for — room to run, to get away from each other, to have separate resting and toileting areas — does not double when the population doubles. Some guidance recognises this by giving a base figure plus a smaller increment per additional animal, which is a different shape of arithmetic entirely.
This tool scales proportionally because that is the only assumption it can make without inventing an increment nobody published, and it says so on screen whenever it does. If you are planning for a group larger than the published figure was written for, treat the scaled number as a starting point for a conversation with your vet or a species welfare organisation, not as a published requirement.
Floor Area Is Only One Dimension of the Problem
Every source quoted here pairs its floor figure with a height requirement, and the reasons are specific to the species. The RSPCA's rabbit guidance asks for height enough that a rabbit can stand fully upright on its hind legs without its ears touching the roof, which is a behavioural criterion rather than a number pulled from a table. The guinea pig figure comes with a 30 cm minimum height. The hamster guidance is more concerned with depth than height, because a hamster needs bedding deep enough to burrow into — 25 cm of it — and an enclosure with high sides but shallow bedding capacity does not deliver that.
Shape matters too. The RSPCA Australia guidance notes that guinea pigs do better in rectangular enclosures than square ones, because a long run allows a sprint that a square of the same area does not. Two enclosures with identical floor area are not interchangeable, which is a limitation of any calculation that reduces housing to a single number.
What the Published Minimum Does Not Cover
A minimum floor area is a threshold, not a specification. It says nothing about whether the enclosure is escape-proof, ventilated, protected from predators and weather, sited out of direct sun, floored in something that will not injure feet, or furnished with the hides and enrichment the species needs. Wire flooring, for example, is discouraged for guinea pigs and rats in the guidance quoted here regardless of how much of it there is.
Nor does it address company. Several of these species are social and are kept in compatible groups, and the compatibility of particular individuals is a question about those animals rather than about square metres. Any decision about which animals live together, and about whether a particular animal's needs differ from the general guidance, belongs with your veterinary surgeon.

- Measuring the outside of the enclosure. Frame thickness, corner posts and a sleeping compartment all take usable floor away from the animals.
- Counting shelves and ramps as floor area. Published figures generally mean ground-level usable floor, and a multi-level cage does not become twice the size.
- Reading the rabbit figure as a hutch size. The RSPCA figure covers the shelter and the attached exercise area together, not the hutch alone.
- Treating a laboratory minimum as a pet standard. The rat figures come from research housing requirements and describe a legal floor, not good companion-animal housing.
- Assuming area is the whole question. Height, bedding depth, shape, flooring material and enrichment all sit outside what any area calculation can capture.
