Tip: the answer comes out as a range because published lifespans are ranges. A four-year-old guinea pig is at the end of one credible lifespan figure and halfway through another, and pretending otherwise with a single number would be false precision.

The pet age calculator above covers the small companion species: rabbits, guinea pigs, Syrian hamsters, rats, ferrets and pet birds. It deliberately does not cover dogs or cats. Those two have decades of population data behind them and their own well-known ageing curves, which is why they have their own pages — the dog age calculator applies the size-adjusted canine curve, and the cat age calculator applies the feline one. Running either species through a general proportional method would misstate its age.

Arb Digital publishes this as a planning and education tool. For the species covered here there is no equivalent published conversion curve, so rather than invent one, this page scales a pet's age against the lifespan figures given by veterinary references and reports the result as a range. Your veterinary surgeon is the authority on any individual animal, and a proportion cannot see dental disease, a heart murmur or a lump.

What This Pet Age Calculator Does

Choose a species and enter an age, and the tool works out what proportion of that species' typical lifespan has elapsed, then expresses the same proportion against a human reference lifespan. Because every published lifespan figure for these species is a range rather than a point, the answer is a range too. It also reports the share of lifespan elapsed, the age in months, and how many human-equivalent years each pet year corresponds to on this method.

The lifespan figures come from veterinary references and are stated on the page as you select each species. Guinea pigs, Syrian hamsters and rats use the biological data given in the Merck Veterinary Manual's Overview of Rodents, which gives four to eight years, one to two years and two to three years respectively. Ferrets use the six-to-ten-year figure from the same manual's Overview of Ferrets. Birds use the manual's Introduction to Birds, which puts smaller birds such as budgies and canaries at about five to fifteen years and larger parrots at twenty to fifty. Rabbits use the RSPCA's figure of eight to twelve years for a pet rabbit.

Boundary worth stating: this is a species ageing proportion, not date arithmetic. If you want the elapsed time between two calendar dates, our age calculator does that and applies no biological scaling at all.

How to Use It

  1. Pick the species. The lifespan figures and their sources appear under the selector, so you can see exactly what the calculation is using.
  2. Enter years and months. For a hamster or a rat, months are the meaningful unit; entering whole years only will lose most of the resolution.
  3. Adjust the human reference lifespan if you want to. Eighty years is the default; changing it scales every output, which demonstrates plainly that the number is a ratio rather than a biological measurement.
  4. Read the range, not the midpoint. The two bars show where the animal sits against the shorter and longer lifespan figures, and the gap between them is the honest uncertainty.
  5. Use the share of lifespan for practical thinking. "Two-thirds of the way through" is a more useful frame for planning than a human-equivalent number.

The Method and How It's Calculated

The conversion is proportional: human-equivalent age = (pet age ÷ species lifespan) × human reference lifespan, computed once against the low end of the published lifespan range and once against the high end.

Working the default values through: a three-year-old guinea pig against the four-year figure is 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 of a lifespan, which against an eighty-year human reference is 60 human-equivalent years. Against the eight-year figure it is 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, or 30 human-equivalent years. So the answer is roughly 30 to 60 human years, and the honest summary is that a three-year-old guinea pig is somewhere between middle-aged and elderly depending on which lifespan figure applies to that individual.

Note the direction, because it catches people out: the shorter lifespan figure produces the higher human-equivalent age. If a guinea pig only lives four years, three of them is a lot of life; if it lives eight, three is less than half.

Why There Is No Curve for These Species

The dog and cat conversions exist because both species have been studied at enormous scale, with millions of clinical records and, in the dog's case, work on molecular ageing markers. Nothing comparable exists for guinea pigs, hamsters or budgerigars. Publishing a species-by-species table of "one hamster month equals x human years" would mean inventing numbers and dressing them as veterinary knowledge, which is exactly what this page refuses to do.

The proportional method has a real weakness and it is worth naming: ageing is not linear in any species. The first weeks of a hamster's life compress an extraordinary amount of development, and a proportional scale flattens that. The same objection applies to the first year of a dog's life, which is why the canine curve is piecewise rather than a straight line. Where the underlying data to build such a curve does not exist, a transparent proportion with its assumptions on display is more honest than a precise-looking fabrication.

Maturity Comes Long Before Middle Age

Reaching sexual maturity and reaching middle age are entirely different milestones, and in small pets they are separated by a startling amount. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives sexual maturity at ten to twelve weeks in guinea pigs, four to seven weeks in Syrian hamsters and six to eight weeks in rats. For rabbits it varies with breed size: about three and a half to four months in small breeds such as the Polish Dwarf and Dutch, four to four and a half months in medium breeds, and six to nine months in giant breeds. Ferrets reach full size at five to six months and are considered adults at one year.

A proportional age calculation says nothing about any of this. A ten-week-old guinea pig is capable of breeding and is, on this page's arithmetic, about four percent of the way through its life. Anyone housing young animals together needs the maturity figure, not the human-equivalent one — and the practical arrangements that follow from it are a conversation for your vet, not for a calculator.

Why Published Lifespans and Real Ones Differ

A "typical lifespan" in a veterinary reference describes what a well-cared-for animal can reach, and population studies routinely find shorter averages. A large UK study of pet rabbits attending veterinary practices found an average lifespan of about 4.3 years against a typical figure of eight to twelve, with survival to more than fourteen years recorded. Both numbers are true and they answer different questions: one is what the species is capable of, the other is what happened to a real population including animals that died young.

This calculator uses the typical-lifespan figures, because a conversion built on population averages would make every healthy animal look older than it is. It is worth knowing the gap exists, and worth knowing that the leading causes of death in that rabbit study were preventable or treatable conditions — which is an argument for routine veterinary attention, not for a particular number on this page.

What This Number Cannot Tell You

A human-equivalent age is a conversational device. It does not assess health, it does not predict how long an individual animal will live, and it should never be the reason a concern goes unexamined. Small prey species are particularly good at concealing illness, and a hamster or a guinea pig that is visibly unwell is often further into a problem than its appearance suggests. Any change in appetite, droppings, breathing, grooming or activity is worth a call regardless of what this page says about the animal's age.

Age does shift what is likely, and that is the legitimate use of a figure like this: it is a reasonable prompt for asking your vet what routine attention is sensible for an animal at this stage. What that attention should be is theirs to decide, on the individual animal in front of them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running a dog or a cat through this page. Both have their own published curves and their own calculators; a general proportion misstates them.
  • Reading the midpoint as the answer when the two lifespan figures are a factor of two apart, as they are for guinea pigs.
  • Confusing sexual maturity with adulthood. A hamster can breed at four to seven weeks and is nowhere near the middle of its life.
  • Entering a rescue animal's estimated age as though it were exact. If the input is uncertain by six months, so is everything downstream of it.
  • Delaying a veterinary conversation because the number looks young. Small prey species hide illness well, and behaviour changes matter at any age.

Does this calculator work for dogs and cats?

No, and deliberately so. Dogs and cats have well-established, species-specific ageing curves derived from large clinical datasets, and they have their own pages on this site. Applying a general proportional method to either would give a misleading answer.

How old is a three-year-old guinea pig in human years?

Roughly 30 to 60 human-equivalent years against an eighty-year human reference. The range comes from the published guinea pig lifespan of four to eight years: three years is 37.5 percent of the longer figure and 75 percent of the shorter one.
