What This Pet Calorie Calculator Does
Energy needs in small-animal nutrition are built in two layers. The first layer is the resting energy requirement, or RER: the energy a healthy, fed animal uses at rest in a comfortable temperature, doing nothing. It scales with metabolic body size rather than with weight directly, which is why a dog ten times heavier than another does not need ten times the calories. The second layer is the maintenance energy requirement, or MER, which multiplies RER by a factor reflecting life stage, neuter status, and activity.
The calculator produces both, keeps them visible side by side, and shows the multiplier it applied so nothing is hidden. It then divides the daily figure by the energy density of your food to give a portion, and by the number of meals to give a per-meal calorie target. The bar showing RER as a share of MER is there to make one point visible: for a neutered adult pet, resting metabolism accounts for roughly two-thirds of the daily total, so activity is a smaller lever than most owners assume.

How to Use It
- Choose the species. Cats and dogs share the resting formula but not the multipliers, and the cat figures are consistently lower for the same reason cats are smaller and less active.
- Enter the current weight in kilograms or pounds. Bathroom scales are workable for larger dogs if you weigh yourself holding the animal and subtract, but a practice scale is far more accurate for cats and small breeds.
- Pick the life stage or activity level that matches. Neuter status changes the multiplier meaningfully, and it is the single input owners most often get wrong.
- Enter the food's energy density from the packaging. It is usually printed as kcal ME per cup or per kilogram; where only per-kilogram is given, divide by ten to get the per-100 g figure this tool expects.
- Take the result to your vet rather than acting on it directly, especially for a growing, pregnant, elderly, or unwell animal.
The Formula and How It's Calculated
The resting requirement uses the standard allometric equation:
RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75
The maintenance requirement is then MER = RER × life-stage factor. The MSD/Merck Veterinary Manual entry on nutritional requirements of small animals sets out both the exponential formula above and a linear alternative, RER = 30 × kg + 70, restricted to animals between 2 kg and 45 kg. It also publishes the daily maintenance table this tool draws its multipliers from: for healthy adult dogs, 1.8 × RER when intact, 1.6 × when neutered and 1.4 × when obesity-prone; for puppies, 3 × under four months and 2 × over four months; for healthy adult cats, 1.4 × intact, 1.2 × neutered and 1 × obesity-prone; and 2.5 × for kittens.
Worked example. A 10 kg neutered adult dog: 100.75 is 5.623, so RER = 70 × 5.623 = 394 kcal per day. Multiplying by 1.6 gives an MER of 630 kcal per day. On a food providing 380 kcal per cup, that is about 1.66 cups daily, or roughly 315 kcal in each of two meals. Notice that the resting figure alone is 63% of the total — the number that walks and play add is real but modest for an ordinary pet dog.
Why the Exponent Is 0.75 and Not 1
Energy use does not scale in direct proportion to body mass. A 40 kg dog is four times the weight of a 10 kg dog but has an RER of about 990 kcal against 394 — roughly two and a half times, not four. The three-quarter-power relationship reflects the fact that larger bodies have proportionally less surface area to lose heat through and a lower mass-specific metabolic rate.
The practical consequence is that small animals need far more calories per kilogram than large ones. Our 10 kg dog needs about 39 kcal per kilogram at rest; a 3 kg cat needs about 53. This is why feeding charts expressed as a flat number of grams per kilogram are systematically wrong at both ends of the size range, overfeeding large dogs and underfeeding small ones. It is also why a small dog can gain weight on what looks like a trivial number of treats: a single 50 kcal biscuit is over 10% of a Chihuahua's daily allowance and under 3% of a Labrador's.
The Treat Arithmetic Nobody Runs
Veterinary nutrition guidance conventionally caps treats and table food at around ten per cent of daily calories, with the remaining ninety per cent coming from a complete, balanced diet. The reason is not calorie control alone: a complete food is formulated to deliver a specific balance of protein, minerals and vitamins, and diluting it too far with unbalanced extras undermines that formulation, which matters most in growing animals.
Run the numbers on a typical day and the cap is easy to breach without noticing. Our 630 kcal dog has a 63 kcal treat budget. Two dental chews, a few training rewards and a corner of cheese clear that comfortably, and because the measured meals have not changed, nothing looks different in the bowl. This is the ordinary mechanism behind slow weight gain in well-cared-for pets, and it is the first thing worth quantifying before assuming a metabolic problem. Why Body Condition Score Beats the Calculation
Every published multiplier is an average drawn from populations of animals, and individual requirements scatter widely around it. Two neutered Labradors of identical weight can differ by hundreds of calories a day in what keeps them stable. That is not a flaw in the equations; it is what an average means. The professional practice is therefore to treat a calculated figure as a starting point, feed it for a few weeks, and adjust based on what the animal's body actually does.
The measurement used for that is body condition scoring, a hands-on nine-point assessment of rib cover, waist and abdominal tuck that the WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines publish charts for and recommend at every visit. It is a better guide than the scale because it distinguishes muscle from fat, and it catches gradual change that a weight reading in a stable range can hide. Where This Calculation Should Not Be Used Alone
Several situations move well outside what a maintenance multiplier can model. Weight loss programmes should be supervised, because restricting a cat's intake too aggressively risks hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition, and because a reduction plan is normally built on estimated ideal weight rather than current weight. Growth in large-breed puppies is its own discipline, since overfeeding during growth is associated with orthopaedic problems, so more is not better. Pregnancy and lactation raise requirements dramatically and unevenly across the period. Illness, surgery and hospitalisation change requirements in directions that are not predictable from a table.
Age is subtler than it looks. Requirements often fall in middle age as activity drops, then rise again in some genuinely old animals as digestive efficiency and lean mass decline — so "senior" is not a single adjustment in one direction.
