Raw feeding guides most often quote 2 to 3 percent for a weight-stable adult dog. This figure is a rule of thumb from those guides, not a measured energy requirement.
Both splits are conventions published by raw-feeding advocates. Neither is a nutrient profile, and neither has been validated as complete for an individual dog.

The raw dog food calculator above performs one specific piece of arithmetic. Raw feeding models do not dose food in kilocalories; they dose it as a percentage of the dog's body weight, and then they divide that daily mass into fixed fractions of muscle meat, raw edible bone, organ and, in the BARF variant, plant material. What This Raw Dog Food Calculator Does

It converts a body weight and a percentage into a daily mass, then splits that mass by four percentages. Nothing more. The default 2.5 percent and the 70/10/10/10 split are the figures most commonly quoted in raw-feeding literature, reproduced here so you can see what they imply in grams, not because this page endorses them.

The split percentages are editable. Choosing "custom" unlocks all four boxes so you can enter a different convention, and the tool reports the sum so you can see immediately if it does not come to 100. It will not quietly renormalise your numbers, because a split that does not add up is usually a transcription error you want to see rather than have corrected behind your back.

The Veterinary Position, Stated Plainly

Raw feeding is a contested topic, and it is not contested evenly. Major veterinary organisations have published positions against it. The AVMA policy discourages feeding raw or undercooked animal-sourced protein to dogs and cats on the grounds of risk to both animal and human health, listing pathogens including Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria monocytogenes and pathogenic Escherichia coli. The FDA's literacy article reports that in its own sampling programme, raw pet food was more likely to be contaminated with disease-causing bacteria than other pet food types, and states that not feeding a raw diet is the single most effective way to avoid that exposure.

There is a second, separate risk that gets far less attention than pathogens: nutritional imbalance. A ration built from percentages is not a nutrient profile. Calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, vitamin D, vitamin A, iodine, zinc, copper, taurine and essential fatty acids are all quantities that a 70/10/10/10 split does not control. Too little bone and the calcium runs short; too much liver and vitamin A accumulates toward toxicity. Neither error announces itself for months.

The only person who can resolve that for a specific animal is a board-certified veterinary nutritionist — a veterinarian with specialist training in formulating diets, who can build a ration against published nutrient requirements and check it against the individual dog's age, condition and medical history. How to Use It

  1. Enter the dog's current body weight in kilograms or pounds. Use the weight from a scale, not an estimate — the whole ration scales directly off this number.
  2. Set the daily percentage. The 2 to 3 percent range is what raw-feeding guides publish for weight-stable adults. Puppies, working dogs and dogs on a weight plan are all outside what a single percentage can represent.
  3. Pick a split model or choose custom and type your own four percentages. Watch the sum reported under the hero figure.
  4. Set meals per day to see the per-meal mass rather than only the daily total.
  5. Take the output to a veterinarian before it becomes a feeding plan. The numbers describe a model; only a clinician who has examined the dog can say anything about the dog.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

The daily mass is D = W × p, where W is body weight in grams and p is the chosen percentage expressed as a fraction. For a 20 kg dog at 2.5 percent: 20,000 g × 0.025 = 500 g per day. Each component is then Cₓ = D × fₓ, where f is that component's fraction of the split. On the default BARF split that gives 350 g muscle meat, 50 g raw edible bone, 50 g organ and 50 g plant. Divided across two meals, each meal is 250 g with the same internal proportions.

Organ is split further because the conventions treat liver separately. Raw-feeding guides usually call for half the organ fraction to be liver and half to be another secreting organ such as kidney or spleen. In the worked example that is 25 g of liver and 25 g of other organ per day. The tool shows this breakdown under the hero line, since it is the fraction most often misread — "organ" in these models does not mean heart, which is treated as muscle meat.

Pound inputs are converted at 1 lb = 453.59237 g before any of this runs, so switching units changes only the displayed inputs and not the underlying arithmetic.

Why a Percentage of Body Weight Is a Weak Dosing Rule

Energy requirement does not scale with body mass. It scales roughly with metabolic body weight, conventionally body mass raised to the power 0.75. That exponent is the reason a 40 kg dog does not need twice the energy of a 20 kg dog — it needs closer to 1.7 times as much. A flat percentage rule assumes the exponent is 1.0, which means it systematically overshoots for large dogs and undershoots for small ones relative to any energy-based estimate.

The practical consequence is that the same 2.5 percent figure that keeps a 10 kg terrier steady will tend to overfeed a 45 kg dog on the same rule. Raw-feeding guides paper over this by suggesting the percentage be adjusted downward for large breeds and upward for small ones, which is really an admission that the percentage is a stand-in for an exponent it cannot represent. Fat content is the other missing variable. A gram of fat carries roughly twice the energy of a gram of protein, so two rations of identical mass can differ by a third or more in energy depending on how fatty the muscle meat is. A mass-based rule has no way to see that. Puppies, Seniors and Why the Percentage Changes

Growing dogs are the case where a single percentage is least defensible. A puppy's energy requirement per kilogram is far higher than an adult's and falls as it approaches mature size, so raw-feeding guides quote figures anywhere from 5 to 10 percent of current body weight for young puppies, stepping down through growth. Some guides instead dose against expected adult weight rather than current weight, which produces a completely different number from the same dog.

That ambiguity matters more for large breeds than small ones. Rapid growth and calcium excess are both implicated in developmental orthopaedic problems in large-breed puppies, and a bone fraction set by percentage rather than by measured calcium content is not controlling for either. At the other end, older dogs commonly need less energy while keeping protein intake up, which a single percentage cannot express because it moves every fraction together. Reducing the percentage cuts protein at exactly the point in life when muscle maintenance matters most. This is a structural limitation of proportional dosing, not a tuning problem.

What the Split Percentages Do and Do Not Control

The bone fraction is the model's proxy for calcium. Raw edible bone is roughly one third mineral by mass, but the actual figure depends heavily on which bone: a chicken wing, a duck neck and a beef rib carry very different bone-to-flesh ratios. Two rations that both say "10 percent bone" can differ substantially in delivered calcium, and the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio — the quantity that actually matters — is not represented in the model at all.

The organ fraction is the model's proxy for micronutrients, and liver dominates it. Liver is dense in vitamin A, copper and B vitamins, which is why the convention caps it at half the organ share. Exceeding that is the classic error in home-prepared raw rations, and vitamin A accumulates rather than clearing, so the consequence builds slowly.

The plant fraction in BARF-style splits is where vegetables, fruit and sometimes seeds or supplements sit. It is the most variable part of the model between published guides, and it is the part with the least agreement about what it is for. Prey-model raw drops it entirely and redistributes the mass to muscle meat, which is why the two presets in this tool give different muscle figures for the same dog.

Reading the Output Honestly

The number in the hero box is a model output, not a prescription. Three questions decide whether it means anything for a particular dog: does the dog have a medical condition that changes its requirements, is the ration nutritionally complete against published requirements, and can this food be handled safely in this household. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating a calculator output as a diet plan — the arithmetic is trivial; the nutritional adequacy and food safety questions it does not touch are the hard parts, and both belong with a veterinarian.
  • Counting heart as organ — in these models heart is muscle meat. Counting it as organ displaces liver and other secreting organs and changes the micronutrient picture entirely.
  • Exceeding half the organ fraction as liver — vitamin A accumulates rather than clearing, so the consequence of a long-running excess is delayed and easy to miss.
  • Applying one percentage across every size of dog — energy scales with roughly the 0.75 power of body mass, so a flat percentage overshoots for large dogs and undershoots for small ones.
  • Assuming that handling precautions remove the pathogen risk — the FDA's guidance is explicit that avoiding raw diets, not handling them carefully, is the measure that actually reduces exposure.
