The Formula and How It's Calculated
The size-adjusted curve works in three phases. The first twelve months contribute about fifteen human years, applied proportionally so a six-month-old scores roughly seven and a half. The second twelve months contribute nine more, taking a two-year-old dog to around twenty-four. From year three onward, each additional dog year adds a fixed number of human years set by size: roughly four for small breeds, five for medium, six for large, and seven for giant breeds. A ten-year-old Labrador in the large band therefore lands near 24 + (8 × 6) = 72 human years, while a ten-year-old Jack Russell in the small band lands near 24 + (8 × 4) = 56.
The second estimate uses a different approach entirely. A 2020 study of methylation patterns in Labrador Retrievers proposed human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, derived from how chemical marks accumulate on DNA in both species. That logarithmic shape captures the rapid early ageing well — it puts a one-year-old dog at 31 — but it was built from a single breed and flattens more than the size-adjusted curve at the older end. Showing both makes the honest point that neither is a measurement.
Why the Multiply-by-Seven Rule Fails
The seven-to-one rule is memorable and wrong in both directions. It understates the first two years badly: a one-year-old dog is not a seven-year-old child, it is an animal that has reached sexual maturity, finished most of its skeletal growth, and can reproduce — biologically much closer to a mid-teenager.
