Working out how big a coop needs to be is arithmetic laid over a set of published allowances. Multiply the bird count by a floor area per bird, do the same for the run, convert a per-bird roost allowance into a total length, and divide the flock by a hens-per-box figure to get the nest count. The chicken coop size calculator above does that arithmetic and, more importantly, tells you exactly where each loaded number came from.
Arb Digital publishes this as a planning and education tool. It is not husbandry advice and it does not tell you how to keep birds. Space allowances differ between reputable sources, they differ by climate and by system, and your local authority may impose its own minimums that override all of them. A veterinarian is the authority on the welfare of any individual animal, and your cooperative extension service is the right place to take questions about a specific flock.
What This Chicken Coop Size Calculator Does
It turns per-bird allowances into totals, and it makes the source of every allowance visible rather than burying it. Choose a bird size and an access arrangement and the fields load figures from a named extension publication; change any of them and the arithmetic follows your number instead. Nothing is hard-coded and nothing is presented as a rule.
It outputs the coop floor area, the run area, the total roost length, the nest box count and the combined footprint, and it converts the coop area into a length for a width you propose so you can hold it against the space you actually have. It does not tell you what to build, what materials to use, how to ventilate, how to site the structure or how to look after birds.
One thing it will not do is invent a figure. Where this page carries a number, that number is quoted from an identified publication, and where two publications disagree the page says so rather than picking a winner.
Where the Loaded Figures Come From
Two sources supply everything the tool loads, both cooperative extension publications from land-grant universities.
Penn State Extension's Small Scale Poultry Housing gives indoor space of 1 square foot per bird for bantam chickens, 1.5 for laying hens and 2 for large chickens, and outside runs of 4, 8 and 10 square feet for the same three groups. For perches it gives six inches per standard bird and four inches per bantam. For nesting it describes boxes of at least 12 by 12 inches, with two nests provided for the first four hens and one further nest for each additional four.
The University of Georgia's Management Guide for the Backyard Flock gives 3 to 3.5 square feet of floor space per layer, 0.75 to 1 square foot for smaller breeds, boxes 12 inches by 12 inches, and one nest box for every four to five hens.
Those two do not agree on floor area, and the disagreement is instructive rather than a problem. Penn State's smaller indoor figure is paired with a separate run allowance, so the total space per bird is the sum of the two. Georgia's larger figure is a housing allowance in a guide oriented toward flock management. Read either number away from its context and you will reach the wrong conclusion, which is precisely why this page attributes each one instead of merging them into a single invented table.
How to Use It
- Enter the number of birds you are actually planning for, including any you intend to add, since a coop is difficult to enlarge later.
- Pick the bird size and access arrangement so the tool loads the relevant published figures.
- Read the attribution before you accept a number. If your situation does not match the one the figure was written for, change it.
- Check the footprint against your site using the proposed width, then against your local rules, which may be stricter.
- Take welfare questions to a vet or your extension service. This page is arithmetic; they are the authority.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
All of it is multiplication. Coop area is birds × area per bird. Run area is birds × run area per bird. Total roost length is birds × roost per bird, converted from inches to feet. The combined footprint is the coop area plus the run area.
The nest box count follows the Penn State pattern where the loaded values are in use: two boxes for the first four hens, then one more for each further group of the hens-per-box figure, rounded up. Written out, that is 2 + ceiling((birds − 4) / hens per box) for flocks above four, and 2 below that. The tool also reports the plain Georgia form, birds divided by the hens-per-box figure and rounded up, so you can see both.
Worked example with the loaded values. Six standard laying hens with outdoor access, at Penn State's 1.5 square feet each, need 9 square feet of coop floor. At 8 square feet each the run is 48 square feet, giving a combined footprint of 57 square feet. Roosts at six inches a bird come to 36 inches, or 3 feet. Nest boxes work out at two for the first four hens plus one for the remaining two, so three boxes; the Georgia form gives six divided by four rounded up, which is two. A coop 4 feet wide would need to be 2.25 feet deep to reach 9 square feet.
Why Published Space Figures Disagree
It is tempting to treat a per-bird allowance as a fact, and it is not one. Several things move it, and understanding them is more useful than memorising any single number.
The first is what the space is for. A figure written for a house where birds also have a run assumes they are outside much of the day. The same figure applied to birds housed permanently indoors describes a different situation entirely, which is why the indoor-only option here loads a larger allowance from a different source.
The second is climate and season. In regions with long hard winters birds spend far more of the year inside, so the coop carries more of the burden. Extension services in northern states and in southern states are writing for genuinely different conditions, and both are right for their own readers.
The third is bird size and breed. A bantam and a large dual-purpose breed differ enough in body size that a single figure cannot serve both, which is why every source separates them.
The fourth is regulation. Municipal ordinances frequently set their own minimum coop and run areas, maximum flock sizes, setbacks from boundaries and neighbouring dwellings, and rules on roosters. Those are legal requirements, not guidance, and they override any published allowance. Check them before you build anything, along with any planning or building permission the structure itself needs.
Planning the Footprint on Your Site
Area is only half the problem; shape and position are the other half. A coop that satisfies the arithmetic can still be unworkable if the shape means you cannot reach the far corner to clean it, or if the run is a long thin strip that leaves birds no space to move away from one another.
Two dimensions are worth checking early. One is access: a structure you have to crawl into gets cleaned less often than one you can stand in or open fully along a side. The other is the perimeter, because a run's fencing cost and its predator exposure both scale with perimeter rather than area, and a square encloses a given area with less fence than a long rectangle. What This Page Is Not
It is not a welfare assessment. Meeting a minimum area is not the same as meeting an animal's needs, and space is one factor among many that a keeper, a vet or an inspector would consider. It is not husbandry guidance: nothing here tells you how to feed, water, medicate, ventilate, brood or manage birds, and those topics belong with your veterinarian and your extension service.
It is not a legal check either. Ordinances vary enormously between municipalities, and some prohibit backyard poultry entirely or restrict it heavily. Nor is it a building or planning approval: a coop is a structure, and depending on its size and siting it may need permission like any other.
And it is not a substitute for looking at the birds. Published allowances describe a starting point for planning a structure on paper. What is actually happening in a flock is a matter for the person in front of it and for a veterinarian, who is the authority on the welfare of any individual animal.
