Ski length is the first decision anyone makes when buying skis and the one most likely to be made badly, because the traditional rule of thumb — stand the ski up and see where it reaches on your body — was written for a generation of skis that no longer exists. This ski size calculator works from height, weight, ability and discipline, and returns a length plus the range around it that would also be reasonable.

What This Ski Size Calculator Does
It starts from your height, applies an adjustment for ability, a second for the type of skiing you do, and a third for how your weight compares with what is typical for your height. The output is a suggested length in centimetres, a range of roughly four centimetres either side, and two reference figures: the length as a percentage of your height, and the classic chin-to-top-of-head band the old rule of thumb describes.
The weight adjustment is the part most sizing charts leave out. A ski is a spring, and its flex pattern is designed around a load. A skier who is significantly heavier than average for their height will flex a given ski more, which effectively softens it and argues for a little more length; a lighter skier has the opposite problem and will struggle to bend a long ski into a turn at all.

How to Use It
- Enter height and weight. Both in whichever unit suits you; the calculator converts internally.
- Be honest about ability. Sizing up because you intend to improve is how people end up with skis they fight for two seasons.
- Pick the skiing you actually do, not the skiing in the video you watched. If nine days in ten are on groomed runs, that is your answer.
- Read the range, not just the number. Anything inside the range is defensible, and the specific model matters more than a couple of centimetres.
- Check the manufacturer's chart for the model you want. Every brand publishes lengths for each ski, and the available lengths in a given model may not include your ideal number.
How the Length Is Calculated
The starting point is height, because ski length has historically been expressed relative to the skier's body. Nordica's published ski sizer chart is a typical manufacturer version of that relationship, listing suggested ski lengths against skier height in centimetres and feet.
The calculator then applies three offsets:
Length = height + ability offset + discipline offset + weight offset
The ability offset runs from about 13 cm shorter for a first-season skier to a few centimetres longer for an expert. Shorter skis initiate turns with less effort and are more forgiving of imprecise input, which is exactly what a learner needs; longer skis are more stable at speed and hold better on firm snow, which is what an expert wants.
The discipline offset covers what the ski is for. Park skis are sized short for spinning and switch landings. Carving skis are sized short because a full-camber ski with a tight turn radius has all of its edge in contact with the snow. All-mountain skis sit at the neutral point. Racing and freeride skis are sized long, for stability and float respectively.
The weight offset compares your weight with an approximate expectation for your height and adjusts by up to five centimetres either way, capped so that a single unusual input cannot dominate the answer. Working the defaults through: a 178 cm skier at 78 kg is close to the height-based expectation, so the weight offset is negligible; intermediate ability subtracts 7 cm and all-mountain adds nothing, giving 171 cm with a sensible range of 167 to 175 cm — comfortably inside the traditional chin-to-head band of 164 to 178 cm.
Why the Old Chin-to-Forehead Rule Broke
For decades the advice was to stand a ski on end and pick one that reached somewhere between your chin and your forehead. That worked when nearly all skis were straight, narrow and fully cambered, so length and effective edge were almost the same thing.
Two changes broke it. Shaped skis arrived in the 1990s with a pronounced sidecut and a much shorter turn radius, and they carve at lengths that would previously have felt uselessly short. Then rocker arrived: tips and sometimes tails that curve up early, lifting a section of the edge off the snow. A 185 cm ski with substantial tip and tail rocker may only have 150 cm of edge in contact on a groomed run, so it behaves like a much shorter ski on hard snow while retaining the surface area for soft snow.
The consequence is that nominal length has become a weaker guide than it used to be, and the ski's profile matters more. That is why this calculator's range is genuinely a range, and why comparing two specific models on a shop floor is worth more than arguing over two centimetres in the abstract.
Turn Radius, Width and What They Do to Length
Three numbers on a ski's spec sheet interact with length and are worth understanding before you buy.
Turn radius is the radius of the arc the ski's sidecut would trace if you tipped it on edge and let it run. A slalom ski might be 13 metres; a giant slalom ski 20 or more. A short radius makes a ski feel eager to turn, which effectively compensates for length — one reason carving skis can be sized shorter without feeling sluggish.
Waist width is the width under the foot. Narrow skis get edge to edge quickly on hard snow. Wide skis float in soft snow but are slower to tip, and a wide ski at a long length is a lot of ski to move around.
Rocker profile determines how much of that length is actually on the snow. Full camber puts the whole edge down; tip rocker lifts the front; full rocker lifts both ends. This is why powder skis are sized long and still feel manageable.
Together these explain why one skier's 175 cm carving ski and another's 185 cm freeride ski can feel equally at home under the same person. The numbers on the topsheet are not directly comparable across categories.
Where Sizing Advice Goes Wrong
Sizing for the skier you plan to become. The most common error. A learner on skis sized for an advanced skier spends the season fighting equipment that will not turn, learns defensive technique to cope, and improves more slowly as a result. Size for the current season and buy again later.
Sizing children by ambition. Children grow, and the temptation to buy long is strong. It is also the worst case for the problem above, because a child has less mass and strength to bend a ski. Junior sizing conventions are shorter relative to height than adult ones for good reason.
Ignoring the snow you actually ski. Someone who skis mostly firm, groomed, early-season snow has different requirements from someone skiing deep, soft snow, even at identical ability. Discipline in this calculator is a proxy for that, but your local conditions are the real driver.
Forgetting that boots matter more. Ill-fitting boots ruin more ski days than a ski two centimetres off ever will, and boot fitting is a skilled job worth paying for. Lessons deliver more improvement per pound than equipment does at almost every level; the National Ski Areas Association publishes safety and instruction resources for the industry that make the same point in a different way.
Renting Before Buying
The single most useful thing a calculator can tell you about ski length is that you can test the answer cheaply. Demo days and rental shops will put you on two lengths of the same model in an afternoon, and half an hour on each settles the question better than any chart.
What to notice: whether the ski initiates a turn when you ask it to or has to be forced, and whether it stays composed at the speed you actually ski or starts to feel nervous. A ski that turns easily but chatters at speed is too short for you. A ski that feels planted but will not come round without effort is too long. The right one does both adequately, and no ski does both perfectly — that trade-off is what length is.
Note the length, the model and the conditions in the same way you would log any other equipment measurement, and use it as your baseline the next time you buy. A recorded personal preference beats a chart every time.
