Leg length varies far more between people of the same height than the charts allow for, and the frame has to fit the legs.

What This Bike Size Calculator Does

Choose a bike type, enter your height and your cycling inseam, and the tool applies the multiplier appropriate to that type. Road, gravel and cyclocross frames come out in centimetres. Mountain bike frames come out in inches, because that is the convention the industry uses for them. Hybrid and city bikes use centimetres with a slightly different multiplier, because their geometry sits between the two.

The grid adds three things a bare frame number does not give you. The size band translates the measurement into the small, medium and large labels most brands print on a size chart. The saddle height is a starting position measured from the bottom bracket centre to the top of the saddle. The standover figure is the maximum frame height that still leaves safe clearance when you stand over the top tube with both feet flat.

What the tool cannot do is replace a proper fitting. It sizes the frame, which is the decision you cannot undo. Reach, stack, stem length, saddle setback and crank length are all adjustable afterwards, and they are what a fitter spends their time on. Getting the frame right is what makes those adjustments possible.

How to Use It

  1. Measure your inseam properly. Stand barefoot against a wall, pull a hardback book up firmly between your legs to mimic saddle pressure, and measure from the top edge of the book to the floor.
  2. Do not use your trouser inseam. It is measured for comfort, not for contact, and it usually comes out several centimetres short.
  3. Pick the bike type before reading the number. A 54 cm road frame and an 18 inch mountain frame are not the same measurement in different units.
  4. Check the standover figure against the frame you are considering. If the bike's standover height exceeds it, that frame is too tall regardless of what the size chart says.
  5. Treat the saddle height as a starting point and adjust from there over several rides rather than all at once.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

Each bike type uses an inseam multiplier that has been in common use for decades. Road and gravel frames use frame size in cm = inseam × 0.665. Mountain bike frames use frame size in inches = inseam in cm × 0.226. Hybrid and city frames use frame size in cm = inseam × 0.685, reflecting their more upright geometry.

The saddle height uses the LeMond method, saddle height = inseam × 0.883, measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle along the seat tube. Standover clearance subtracts a type-dependent margin from the inseam: 2.5 cm for road, 7.5 cm for mountain bikes where you may need to dismount quickly on rough ground, and 5 cm for hybrids.

Working the default example of a rider 178 cm tall with an 82 cm inseam on a road bike: the frame comes out at 82 × 0.665 = 54.5 cm, which falls in the medium band. The saddle height is 82 × 0.883 = 72.4 cm, and the maximum standover is 82 − 2.5 = 79.5 cm. The inseam is 46.1 percent of height, which is close to typical. Why Height Charts Get It Wrong for So Many Riders

The ratio of leg length to total height varies substantially between individuals. A cycling inseam is typically between 45 and 48 percent of height, and at 178 cm that range spans about 80 to 85 cm. Run those two extremes through the road multiplier and you get 53.2 cm and 56.6 cm, which is two frame sizes apart for two riders of identical height.

Height charts collapse that variation into a single recommendation, which means they are right for riders near the middle of the distribution and wrong for everyone at the edges. Long-legged riders end up on frames that are too small in the reach and too low in the saddle; short-legged riders end up on frames they cannot stand over comfortably.

This is why the inseam measurement is worth doing carefully. The book-against-the-wall method is not a gimmick: it reproduces the pressure a saddle applies, which is what determines effective leg length on a bike. Measuring in socks, without the book, or against a soft surface all read short, and each centimetre of error moves the frame recommendation by about two thirds of a centimetre.

Frame Size Numbers Are Not Comparable Between Brands

A frame size in centimetres traditionally meant the length of the seat tube, and for a classic horizontal-top-tube frame that measurement described the bike well. Modern frames have sloping top tubes, so the seat tube is shorter than the bike's effective size, and brands measure it from different points — centre of the bottom bracket to the centre of the top tube junction, or to the top of the seat tube, which can differ by a couple of centimetres on the same frame.

The result is that a 54 from one manufacturer can ride like a 56 from another. This is why the industry has drifted toward S, M and L labels and toward publishing stack and reach instead. Stack is the vertical distance from the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube; reach is the horizontal distance. Together they describe the space the rider occupies, and unlike seat tube length they are measured the same way by everyone.

Use the number this calculator gives you to pick the right row on a specific manufacturer's chart, not as a value to shop by directly. Where two sizes both look plausible, the standover figure usually breaks the tie, and the smaller frame is generally the safer choice because a shorter stem and a longer seatpost can stretch a small frame, while nothing shrinks a large one.

Mountain Bikes Have Moved Away From Sizing by Leg Length

Mountain bike geometry has changed more in the last decade than road geometry has in fifty years. Frames have grown longer in reach, slacker in head angle and shorter in seat tube, and dropper posts have removed the old constraint that the seat tube had to be short enough to lower the saddle for descending.

The consequence is that seat tube length — the thing the inches figure describes — has become the least informative measurement on a mountain bike. Many riders now size by reach and by the amount of dropper post travel they can fit, rather than by the frame's nominal size. Two frames both labelled 18 inch can differ by 40 mm in reach, which is far more noticeable on the trail than the seat tube difference.

Take the inches figure here as a starting bracket rather than an answer, and check reach against the manufacturer's chart before deciding. The generous standover margin the calculator applies to mountain bikes reflects the other reason seat tube height matters off road: you sometimes need to get off the bike in a hurry on uneven ground, and clearance is what makes that safe. What the Saddle Height Number Is and Is Not

The 0.883 multiplier gives a position that suits most riders as a starting point, and it is measured along the seat tube from the bottom bracket centre to the top of the saddle, not from the ground and not to the seat clamp. Getting the reference points wrong is the most common way this number gets misapplied.

It is a starting point because pedalling technique, crank length, shoe stack height and cleat position all shift the effective height. Longer cranks lower the saddle relative to the same knee angle; thicker shoe soles raise it. Riders who point their toes need slightly more height than those who drop their heels. None of that is in the formula.

Change it gradually. Moving a saddle by more than about five millimetres at once is enough to alter which muscles do the work and where load falls across the knee, and the effect often shows up a ride or two later rather than immediately. Adjust in small steps, ride on each setting more than once, and stop when nothing is complaining.   • Using a trouser inseam — it is cut for comfort and typically reads several centimetres short, which shifts the frame recommendation by a size.
  • Comparing frame numbers across brands — seat tube length is measured from different points by different manufacturers, so a 54 is not always a 54.
