What This Swim Pace Calculator Does
Enter the distance you swam, the unit that distance is measured in, your pool length and your finish time. The tool divides the time across the distance and scales it to 100 units, which gives the pace per 100 — the currency of every swim set ever written on a whiteboard. Because a pool swim is a sequence of discrete lengths rather than a continuous line, it also converts the distance into a length count and reports the average time each length took.
The per-50 split is included because most sets are written in 50s, and halving a per-100 pace in your head under fatigue is harder than it sounds. The target-pace projection answers the other common question: if I want to hold 1:45 per 100, what does that make the whole swim? That is a planning number, not a prediction of what you will actually do on the day.
Distances in metres and yards are kept strictly separate. Choosing yards reports a pace per 100 yd and treats a 25 yd pool as 22.86 m internally for the length count. Mixing the two is the single most common source of confusion in swim data, and the calculator refuses to blur them.
How to Use It
- Enter the distance and pick its unit. If you swam in a yards pool, choose yards, or every number that follows will be about 9 per cent optimistic.
- Choose your pool length. This drives the length count and the per-length split. Select open water if the swim had no walls.
- Enter the finish time in hours, minutes and seconds. Leave hours at zero for anything under an hour.
- Set the stroke label. It does not change the maths — it changes what the number means, since a breaststroke 100 and a freestyle 100 are not comparable quantities.
- Optionally set a target pace per 100 to see the finish time that pace implies and how far your actual swim sits from it.
The Formula and How It's Calculated
Pace per 100 is a straight proportion. Convert the finish time to seconds, divide by the distance, and multiply by 100:
Pace per 100 = (total seconds ÷ distance) × 100
A 1,500 m swim in 24:30 is 1,470 seconds. Divided by 1,500 that is 0.98 seconds per metre; multiplied by 100 it is 98 seconds, or a pace of 1:38.0 per 100 m. The per-50 split is simply half of that, 49.0 seconds. In a 25 yd pool, 1,500 m is 65.6 lengths, so the average length took about 22.4 seconds. Speed in metres per second is the reciprocal relationship: 1,500 ÷ 1,470 = 1.02 m/s.
The target projection runs the same proportion backwards. A target of 1:45 per 100 is 105 seconds, so 1,500 m at that pace is 105 × 15 = 1,575 seconds, or 26:15. The comparison bar shows the target pace divided by the actual pace as a percentage, so a bar at 100 per cent means you swam at or inside your target.
Why Swimming Uses Per 100 and Not Per Kilometre
Runners think in minutes per mile or per kilometre because a mile is a natural unit of road. Swimmers think in per 100 because 100 is a natural unit of pool: it is four lengths of a 25 m pool, two lengths of a 50 m pool, and the shortest distance at which a pace is stable rather than dominated by the start. Almost every training set is built from 50s, 100s, 200s and 400s, so a per-100 pace slots directly into the workout you are about to swim.
There is a second, less obvious reason. Water resistance rises roughly with the square of speed, so small changes in effort produce small changes in pace across a very compressed range. A per-kilometre figure would push the interesting digits far to the right of the decimal point. Per 100, the difference between a good day and a bad one is a couple of visible seconds, which is exactly the resolution a swimmer can act on.
Short Course, Long Course and Yards
Competitive swimming is contested in three pool formats, and a time only means something once you know which one produced it. World Aquatics recognises long course, in a 50 m pool, and short course, in a 25 m pool; the United States adds short course yards, a 25 yd pool used across college and masters swimming, as described in this overview of short course swimming formats. The practical effect is large. A 25 yd pool gives you a turn every 25 yards; a 50 m pool gives you one every 50 metres. Turns are the fastest part of any lap because the push-off carries you at speeds you cannot generate swimming. Halving the number of turns removes a meaningful share of a swim's free speed, which is why the same swimmer's per-100 pace is typically several seconds slower long course than short course, with no change in fitness at all.
What the Length Count Tells You
The length count is more useful than it looks. It tells you whether your target distance divides cleanly into your pool, and it very often does not. A 1,500 m swim in a 25 yd pool is not 60 lengths, it is about 65.6 — so the round-number set you planned finishes mid-pool. Most people quietly round to 66 lengths and then compare the resulting time against a 1,500 m benchmark that no longer applies.
The seconds-per-length figure is the number to watch across a long swim. It averages everything, which is its limitation, but it gives you a target you can actually count against the pace clock at the wall. If your average length is 22 seconds and you are hitting the wall at 25, you have the information mid-swim rather than after it.
Where a Single Average Pace Misleads
A finish time divided by a distance gives you the mean, and the mean hides the shape of the swim. Two swimmers with an identical 1:38 per 100 average can have swum completely different races: one holding 1:38 throughout, the other going out at 1:30 and fading to 1:50. Only the first has a pace they can repeat. If you want to see the shape, take a split at the wall every 200 or 400 and run each segment through the calculator separately.
Open-water swims break the average in a different way. Current, chop and navigation error all add distance and time that no pool figure predicts, and a GPS watch measures the line you actually swam, not the course. An open-water pace per 100 is a record of one swim in one set of conditions, and comparing it against a pool pace tells you almost nothing about either.
Pace, Effort and Energy Are Different Questions
This page answers a pace question. It says nothing about how hard the swim was or how much energy it used, and those are separate calculations with separate inputs. - Comparing a yards pace with a metres pace. 100 yd is 91.44 m, so a yards pace flatters you by roughly 9 per cent against the metric figure.
- Assuming a short course pace transfers to long course. Fewer walls means fewer push-offs, and the pace slows even when nothing else changes.
- Rounding an awkward length count and then treating the result as the round distance you originally planned.
- Reading an average as a plan. An average pace produced by going out fast and fading is not a pace you can hold.
