What This Age-Graded Calculator Does
It applies the World Masters Athletics age-grading arithmetic to numbers you supply.
WMA maintains factor tables for road and track events, covering both sexes and every single year of age. Each factor expresses how much the standard for a given event slows with age. Feed the calculator your time, the open standard for your event and sex, and your published factor, and it returns three things: your age-graded percentage, your age-equivalent open time — the time an open-age athlete would have to run to match your performance — and the age standard, the time that would score 100% at your age.
What it deliberately does not do is publish the tables. Standards and factors are revised periodically, differ by event and sex, and are the property of the governing body that produces them. Take yours from World Masters Athletics, which publishes the current age factor documents, and take open standards from the results and lists published by World Athletics. A calculator that hard-codes a stale table is worse than one that asks.
How to Use It
- Use an accurate, measured course. Age grading compares against standards set on certified courses. A percentage from a short course or a downhill point-to-point is not comparable with one from a certified loop.
- Look up the open standard for your event and sex. This is the reference time the whole scale is built on, and it must match the event you actually ran.
- Look up your age factor. It is published per event, per sex, per single year of age. Do not interpolate across five-year bands if a single-year figure exists.
- Keep both from the same source and edition. Mixing a standard from one revision with a factor from another produces a percentage that means nothing.
- Read the equivalent open time, not just the percentage. It is the more intuitive output, and it is the one that makes sense to a training partner who has never heard of age grading.
The Formula: How Age Grading Is Calculated
Three short steps, all of them from the WMA method.
Step one — the age standard. The factor converts the open standard into the standard for your age: age standard = open standard ÷ factor. Because the factor is at or below 1, the age standard is slower than the open one, and it gets slower as the factor falls.
Step two — the age-equivalent open time. equivalent = your time × factor. This is your result expressed as what an open-age athlete would have to run to perform equally well, and it is the number most people find easiest to interpret.
Step three — the percentage. age grade = open standard ÷ (your time × factor) × 100, which is the same as comparing your time directly with the age standard. A result exactly matching the age standard scores 100%.
Worked example, matching the values this page loads with. A 10 km in 45:00 — that is 2,700 seconds — with an open standard of 26:50, or 1,610 seconds, and an age factor of 0.9000. The age standard is 1,610 ÷ 0.9 = 1,788.9 seconds, or 29:49. The age-equivalent open time is 2,700 × 0.9 = 2,430 seconds, or 40:30. The percentage is 1,610 ÷ 2,430 × 100 = 66.26%. So the same clock time that reads 45:00 on the day is worth a 40:30 open performance once age is accounted for, and it sits at just over two thirds of the age standard.
What the Percentage Is and Is Not
An age-graded percentage is a ratio against a published standard. That is all it is, and being precise about that keeps it useful.
It is not a percentile among finishers, so 70% does not mean you beat 70% of the field. It is not a fitness score, a VO₂ estimate or a health measure. And it is not a prediction — it says nothing about what you will run next month, which is the marathon time predictor's job.
What it is good at is comparison across things that are otherwise incomparable. It lets a 58-year-old and a 24-year-old compare performances honestly. It lets one runner compare their own 5 km with their own marathon, because both are scored against their own standard. And it lets you see whether a slower time this year was actually a worse performance, or simply a year older.
Percentages above 100 are possible and not an error. The standards are reference times rather than absolute limits, and any athlete who runs faster than the standard for their age scores above 100 — which is exactly what happens when masters world records are set.
Why the Tables Get Revised
Age-grading factors are empirical. They are derived from what masters athletes have actually achieved, and as the depth and quality of masters competition has grown, the observed standards have moved.
This has a practical consequence that catches people out: the same race result can score differently under different table revisions. If your percentage from a race two years ago does not match what a calculator gives you today, the most likely explanation is not an error but a table update. When you record an age-graded percentage, record which tables it came from, in the same way you would record which edition of a standard a structural number came from.
It also means age grading is less precise at the extremes. For very young and very old age groups, and for less commonly contested events, the underlying sample of performances is thinner and the factors carry more uncertainty. Treat a percentage from a 90-year-old's 3,000 m with more caution than one from a 45-year-old's 10 km.
Comparing Across Distances Fairly
One of the most useful things age grading does is let you compare your own results at different distances, and doing that well takes a little care.
If your 5 km grades at 72% and your marathon at 63%, that is real information: relative to the standard, your short-distance running is stronger. Common explanations are training distribution, insufficient long-run volume, or simply less experience at pacing a marathon. It is not evidence that the marathon standard is wrong.
But the comparison only holds if the conditions were comparable. A 5 km on a flat certified course in cool weather and a marathon in 26 °C heat are not a fair pair, and age grading makes no correction for weather, terrain, altitude or field depth. Neither does it correct for a hilly certified course, which is legitimately slower without being any less valid.

Where Age Grading Is Actually Used
It is not just a curiosity. Many road races award age-graded prizes alongside overall and category prizes, precisely because a five-year age band lumps a 40-year-old with a 44-year-old, and grading resolves that. Some club championships score whole seasons on age-graded percentages so that members across a forty-year age range can compete in the same competition. Parkrun-style events publish it routinely.
Used for yourself, its main value is longitudinal. A runner tracking raw times through their fifties watches the numbers get worse and can read that as decline. A runner tracking age-graded percentages sees whether they are actually losing ground relative to the standard, holding steady, or improving — and those three cases look identical on a stopwatch.
