What This Puppy Adult Weight Calculator Does

The arithmetic is deliberately simple, because the honest part of this problem is the multiplier rather than the multiplication. Projected adult weight is current weight multiplied by whatever factor you choose, and the tool prefills a set of long-standing rules — small breed weight at six weeks times four, medium breed weight at fourteen weeks times two and a half, large breed weight at twenty weeks times two — each of which only applies near the age it names.

Those boundaries are what the grid reports, so the category is a sourced classification rather than a label we invented.

How to Use It

  1. Weigh the animal accurately and note its age in weeks. Both matter, because a multiplier written for fourteen weeks says nothing useful at six.
  2. Pick the rule closest to the animal's age and expected build, or select no prefill and type a multiplier you trust.
  3. Overwrite the multiplier if you have better information, such as a percentile from a plotted growth chart or the adult weights of both parents.
  4. Read the size category rather than fixating on the exact figure. For buying a crate or a carrier, the band is what actually determines the purchase.
  5. Run the calculation again in a few weeks. A projection that keeps moving is telling you the multiplier is wrong for this animal.

The Formula and How It's Calculated

Projected adult weight is current weight multiplied by the multiplier. A twenty-week-old puppy weighing 18 kg with the large-breed rule of two projects to 36 kg, which falls in the 30 to under 40 kg band, leaves 18 kg still to gain, and means the puppy has reached 50 per cent of its projected adult size. Switch the units and the same projection reads 39.7 lb now and 79.4 lb grown.

The share reached is simply current weight divided by projected adult weight. It is the most useful number on the page for planning purchases, because equipment sized for the current animal will be outgrown in proportion to how much of that bar is still empty. The typical age at adult weight comes from the same PLOS ONE paper, which notes smaller dogs reaching maturity between eight and twelve months of age while larger breeds can require up to twenty-four months.

Why the Rules of Thumb Are Rules of Thumb

Every doubling rule encodes an assumption about the shape of a growth curve, and growth curves are not the same shape across sizes. Small dogs grow fast and stop early; giant breeds grow for twice as long and are still filling out well after they look finished. A rule calibrated for one band gives a badly wrong answer applied to another, and the same rule applied at the wrong age within a band is wrong too.

The 2017 growth standard study is candid about the limits here: it could not construct a complete growth curve model for its largest category at all, so even the properly validated charts thin out at the giant end. That is a good reason to treat any giant-breed projection as a wide range rather than a figure, and a good reason this page shows you the multiplier it used instead of hiding it.

Crossbreeds and the Parent Problem

For a purebred puppy, breed standards and the parents' adult weights both give useful anchors. For a crossbreed they can mislead badly, because adult size in a cross does not reliably land midway between the parents and the two parents may not both be known. Rescue puppies compound it further, since the stated age is often a veterinary estimate from dentition with a real margin of error either way.

Where the inputs are that uncertain, the sensible approach is to bracket the answer: run the calculation with a low and a high multiplier and treat the two results as the ends of a range. Kittens Follow a Different Curve

The canine rules on this page do not transfer to cats, which is why no kitten multiplier is prefilled. Feline growth is compressed into a narrower band of adult sizes and runs on a different timetable. That range — up to about eighteen months — is a useful indication of how long feline growth takes to complete, and it is why a projection made at twelve weeks carries much more uncertainty than one made at six months. If you are working with a kitten, set the multiplier yourself from a plotted chart rather than borrowing a puppy rule, and read the projection as a rough band.

What a Projection Cannot Tell You

It cannot tell you whether a puppy is growing well. A projection scales today's weight forward and is entirely indifferent to whether today's weight is appropriate — an underweight puppy projects to an underweight adult and an overweight one projects to an overweight adult, and the tool cannot distinguish either case. That is precisely what a plotted percentile chart is for.

It also cannot tell you anything about how to feed.
