What This Dog Life Expectancy Calculator Does
It starts with a baseline. Choosing a size band fills the baseline field with the median survival reported for purebred dogs of that size in the 2024 study Longevity of companion dog breeds: those at risk from early death, which analysed a dataset of hundreds of thousands of UK dogs: 12.7 years for small breeds, 12.5 for medium and 11.9 for large. The field stays editable, so if your breed has a published figure of its own you can use that instead of the size average.
It then applies a sex and neuter factor derived from Life tables of annual life expectancy and mortality for companion dogs in the United Kingdom. That study reported life expectancy at age zero of 11.23 years across all dogs, 11.98 years for neutered females, 11.49 for neutered males, 10.50 for entire females and 10.58 for entire males. The calculator converts each of those into a ratio against the 11.23-year all-dog figure and multiplies the baseline by it. A neutered female therefore gets a factor of about 1.067, and an entire female about 0.935.

How to Use It
- Enter the dog's current age in years. Decimals are fine, and for a rescue dog with an estimated age it is worth running the calculation twice at the edges of the estimate.
- Choose the adult size band by mature body weight rather than by current weight or by breed name. This is what rewrites the baseline.
- Set sex and neuter status, which together select one of the four published groups and set the adjustment factor.
- Override the baseline if you have a better number. Breed-specific medians published in the same literature are more precise than a size average.
- Read the share elapsed and the stage band rather than fixating on the headline figure. The proportion is the part that carries practical meaning.
The Formula and How It's Calculated
Estimated total lifespan is the baseline multiplied by the sex and neuter factor, plus any manual adjustment you enter. Estimated remaining years is that total minus the dog's current age, floored at zero. Share elapsed is current age divided by estimated total, expressed as a percentage.
Take a five-year-old neutered female of medium build. The baseline is 12.5 years. The neutered-female factor is 11.98 ÷ 11.23 = 1.0668. Total life expectancy comes out at 12.5 × 1.0668 = 13.3 years, remaining years at 13.3 − 5 = 8.3, and the share elapsed at 5 ÷ 13.3 = 37.5 per cent. Switch the same dog to entire and the factor becomes 10.50 ÷ 11.23 = 0.9349, dropping the total to 11.7 years.
Why Simple Subtraction Understates an Older Dog
This is the most important limitation on the page, and most life expectancy calculators quietly ignore it. Life expectancy at birth is an average across a whole cohort, including the animals that died young. A dog that has already reached ten has, by definition, avoided everything that killed the dogs pulling that average down, so its expected remaining years are higher than birth-cohort figure minus ten. Human life tables show exactly the same pattern, which is why they publish expectancy at every age rather than one number.
The practical consequence is that the remaining-years figure here is conservative for older dogs and reasonably fair for young ones. If your dog is already past the estimated total, the calculator floors the remainder at zero and says so; that does not mean anything is wrong, it means the dog has outlived the median, which roughly half of all dogs do. What Body Size Actually Explains
Across mammals, bigger species live longer. Within the domestic dog the relationship inverts, and the 2024 UK analysis puts numbers on it: 12.7 years median survival for small purebreds against 11.9 for large ones. That is a real and consistent gap, but notice how small it is compared with the difference between individual breeds in the same dataset, where the range runs from under five years to over thirteen.
The same study reported that flat-faced purebreds showed accelerated time to death at 11.2 years against 12.8 for breeds with medium head proportions. Conformation, in other words, does more work than body size alone in that dataset. If your dog is a brachycephalic breed, the size band on its own will overstate the baseline, and typing a lower figure into the editable field is the honest response.
Why Neutering Appears in the Numbers
The life-table study found neutered dogs of both sexes had higher life expectancy at age zero than entire dogs, and this calculator reflects that because it reflects the data. What the data cannot do is establish that neutering caused the difference. Neutered dogs in a veterinary dataset differ from entire dogs in many ways at once — owner demographics, working versus companion roles, breed mix, and the simple fact that a dog must survive long enough to be neutered before it appears in that group.
That last point is a real statistical artefact worth naming: a dog that dies at eight weeks is never neutered, so it can only ever count as entire. Read the adjustment as an association observed in a large population, not as a lever you can pull. Whether and when to neuter a specific dog is a clinical decision that depends on breed, sex, size and individual health, and it belongs with your vet.
Where This Estimate Breaks Down
The underlying figures come from UK veterinary practice records. Care patterns, breed popularity and euthanasia norms differ between countries, so the absolute numbers travel less well than the relationships between them. Crossbreeds are not represented by a purebred median at all, though the dataset suggests they generally do at least as well as purebreds of comparable size.
