Net carbs is a marketing term before it is a nutritional one. No food regulator defines it, no label is required to print it, and the number a manufacturer puts on the front of a box depends entirely on which subtraction rule they chose. The net carbs calculator above works it out from the lines that are regulated — total carbohydrate, dietary fibre and sugar alcohols — and shows what each of the competing conventions does to the answer.

What This Net Carbs Calculator Does

Enter the label lines and it returns net carbohydrate per serving, for the number of servings you are actually eating, and per 100 grams of the product. It reports how many grams it subtracted and what share of the total carbohydrate that represents, which is a quick sanity check: if a product claims to have subtracted 80 percent of its carbohydrate, it is worth looking at what those grams actually are.

It handles the two label systems separately. A United States nutrition facts panel lists dietary fibre inside total carbohydrate, so fibre has to be subtracted. A United Kingdom or European Union panel lists carbohydrate with fibre already excluded, so subtracting again double-counts it and produces a figure that is simply wrong. The tool asks which you have rather than guessing.

How to Use It

  1. Choose the label style first. If the panel lists carbohydrate and then "of which sugars" underneath, it is the UK/EU style and fibre is already excluded.
  2. Copy the per-serving column exactly, including any sugar alcohol lines. Some labels break erythritol out separately; many list only a combined polyols figure.
  3. Pick a sugar alcohol rule. Half is the widely used convention, all is the most generous, none is the most conservative.
  4. Enter how many servings you are eating, not how many are in the pack, so the headline figure reflects the actual portion.
  5. Compare the bars. If the three conventions differ a lot, the product's marketing number depends on a judgement call rather than a measurement.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

On a US-style label:

Net carbs = total carbohydrate − dietary fibre − erythritol − (other sugar alcohols × rule factor)

On a UK or EU-style label the fibre term is dropped, because the carbohydrate figure already excludes it:

Net carbs = carbohydrate − erythritol − (other sugar alcohols × rule factor)

The rule factor is 1 for subtract-all, 0.5 for subtract-half and 0 for subtract-none. The result is floored at zero, and the per-100-gram figure scales by the serving weight.

Erythritol is treated separately from other sugar alcohols for a substantive reason rather than an arbitrary one. It is absorbed in the small intestine and excreted largely unchanged in urine, so it contributes very little metabolisable energy. Maltitol, at the other end of the range, is partially digested and does contribute. Lumping them together is what makes a single polyol rule unsatisfactory and why the tool splits them.

Work the loaded example. A serving with 22 grams of total carbohydrate, 8 grams of fibre, 5 grams of erythritol and 4 grams of other sugar alcohols under the half rule gives 22 − 8 − 5 − 2 = 7 grams of net carbs. Under the subtract-all rule the same serving is 5 grams; under subtract-none it is 9. The label has not changed — only the convention has. That 5-to-9 spread is exactly why front-of-pack net carb claims should be treated as a starting point.

Why Fibre Is Subtracted, and Where That Breaks Down

The reasoning behind subtracting fibre is straightforward: dietary fibre is not broken down to glucose in the small intestine, so it does not contribute to a blood glucose rise the way starch and sugars do. That is why glycemic load is calculated on available carbohydrate rather than total carbohydrate, and it is the honest core of the net carbs idea.

Where it gets complicated is that "dietary fibre" on a label is a legal category, not a single substance, and what qualifies has been revised in several jurisdictions. It covers intact fibre in whole foods and also isolated and synthetic fibres added to manufactured products — inulin, polydextrose, resistant starches and others. These behave differently from each other. Some are fermented in the large intestine and yield short-chain fatty acids that do provide energy, albeit less than starch would.

The practical consequence is that ten grams of fibre in a bowl of lentils and ten grams of added isolated fibre in a protein bar are not equivalent, even though the label treats them identically. Sugar Alcohols and the Half Rule

The convention of subtracting half of a product's sugar alcohols is widely used and has no official standing whatsoever. It is a rough average across a group of compounds that vary enormously — erythritol is almost entirely non-contributing, xylitol and sorbitol are partly absorbed, and maltitol is absorbed to a substantial degree.

If a label gives you only a single "sugar alcohols" or "polyols" line with no breakdown, the ingredient list will usually tell you which one dominates, because it is listed in descending order by weight. A product whose first sweetener is erythritol behaves very differently from one built on maltitol, and the half rule is a poor fit for both.

There is also a practical point that has nothing to do with arithmetic: sugar alcohols in quantity have well-documented digestive effects, which is why many products carry a warning to that effect. That is a reason to read the grams rather than the net figure, whatever convention you apply to them.

What the Number Cannot Tell You

Net carbs compresses a nuanced digestive question into one subtraction, and three things fall out in the process.

The first is that individual responses differ. The same product produces different blood glucose curves in different people, and the same person can respond differently on different days. A calculated figure is a property of the label, not a prediction about a body.

The second is that calories do not follow net carbs down. A bar with 5 grams of net carbs and 20 grams of polyols still carries the energy those polyols contribute, and it is entirely possible for a low-net-carb product to be energy-dense. The third is that the total carbohydrate line is the one that is actually measured and regulated. Net carbs is derived from it by a rule you chose. When two products disagree, comparing their total carbohydrate and fibre lines directly is more informative than comparing two net figures computed under unknown conventions. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Subtracting fibre from a UK or EU label — it has already been excluded from the carbohydrate figure, so subtracting again understates the result.
  • Applying one polyol rule to every product — erythritol and maltitol are not interchangeable, and a single blanket rule fits neither well.
  • Using the label serving rather than your portion — a bar is one serving, a bag of the same product is often four.
  • Assuming low net carbs means low calories — the energy in fibre and polyols does not disappear when you subtract the grams.
  • Comparing two front-of-pack net carb claims — they may have been computed under different rules, which makes the comparison meaningless.
