How to Use It
- Choose the direction. Start from a pan when you already own the tin or have been quoted a size. Start from a guest count when you are still deciding what to bake or order.
- Enter the pan. Round and square pans use the diameter or side field; rectangles and sheet pans use the length and width fields.
- Set the finished height. Not the pan height — the height of the assembled cake, including filling between layers. Two 2-inch layers with a thin filling is close to 4 inches.
- Pick the slice convention. Wedding slices are narrow and formal, party slices are half again as wide, and the dessert option is what most people would cut at home for themselves.
- Add a spare margin if you need one. Five to ten percent covers the practical losses of cutting a real cake with a real knife in a room full of people.
The Formula and How It Is Calculated
Every serving convention describes a rectangular block of cake, so the calculation is a volume division. First the top area of the pan:
Round area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² | Square area = side² | Rectangle area = length × width
Then the cake volume and the slice volume:
Cake volume = area × finished height
Slice volume = slice width × slice depth × 4
The 4 is the reference height built into every published serving chart. Slice conventions are always quoted as a footprint — one inch by two inches, for instance — with a four-inch-tall cake taken as read. Dividing cake volume by slice volume and rounding down gives the serving count, and adding a spare percentage reduces it proportionally.
Servings = floor( cake volume ÷ slice volume ÷ (1 + spare% ÷ 100) )
Work the loaded example by hand. A ten-inch round cake has a top area of π × 5² = 78.5 square inches. At four inches tall its volume is 314.2 cubic inches. A wedding slice of 1 × 2 × 4 inches is 8 cubic inches. Dividing gives 39.3, so 39 servings — which lands within one slice of the 38 that pan manufacturers publish for a ten-inch round at wedding size. Switch to a party slice of 1.5 × 2 inches and the slice volume becomes 12 cubic inches, giving 26 servings from exactly the same cake.

Why Round Cakes Are Not Cut Into Equal Blocks
The volume model above assumes the cake is divided into a grid of identical rectangular slices. A round cake cut in the traditional way — wedges radiating from the centre — does not work like that at all, and the difference is worth understanding before you argue with a number.
Wedges are wide at the crust and pointed at the middle, so a wedge that is a comfortable two inches across at the edge is barely a mouthful at the centre. That is fine for a small cake and hopeless for a large one: a sixteen-inch round cut into wedges gives huge portions or unmanageably thin ones. This is why caterers cutting large round cakes do not use wedges. They cut the cake into a series of concentric rings, then cut each ring into slices of roughly the intended footprint, working inwards. That method produces slices of consistent size and is exactly what the area division above models.
The practical consequence is that a serving figure for a large round cake is achievable only if it is cut the caterer's way. If a family member cuts an eighteen-inch round into wedges at the table, the cake will feed perhaps half the number the chart promised. When a count matters, it is worth agreeing who cuts and how before the cake arrives.
Height, Layers and the Trap in Tall Cakes
Height is where serving charts quietly mislead. Almost every chart in circulation assumes a cake four inches tall, and it says so in a footnote nobody reads. If your cake is two layers of a single-inch sponge with cream between, it is not four inches tall, and the chart's number is roughly double what you will actually get.
Above four inches the relationship stops being linear in practice, even though the arithmetic here treats it as if it were. A six-inch-tall cake technically contains 50 percent more volume than a four-inch one, but a slice six inches tall and one inch wide falls over on the plate. Real bakers handle a tall cake either by cutting it horizontally into two shorter slices, which does recover the extra servings, or by simply serving taller slices, which does not. A tiered cake is not a special case — it is several cakes whose serving counts are added together. Run each tier through the calculator at its own diameter and height, then total the results. Two things routinely go wrong here. The first is counting the top tier: on a wedding cake it is often kept rather than served, so it should be excluded from the count. The second is assuming the tiers are the same height, which they frequently are not, since taller lower tiers are a common way to improve the proportions of a stacked cake.
