That is a calendar problem, and it is the only part of canine reproduction a web page can honestly help with. Everything downstream of it — whether she should be bred at all, whether she is healthy enough, when she actually ovulates — belongs to a veterinarian who has examined her.

What This Dog Heat Cycle Calculator Does
You give it four things: the first day of the last heat, the interval between her seasons in months, the length of proestrus in days, and the length of estrus in days. It returns the projected start date of the next heat, the two dates that bracket the receptive window inside that heat, the length of the interval expressed in days rather than months, and the date of the heat after that. A set of bars shows how the interval divides between proestrus, estrus, and the long combined diestrus and anestrus stretch that makes up the great majority of the cycle.
The projection is pure calendar arithmetic. Nothing is inferred about the dog and no biological rule is applied that you did not enter yourself. A calculator that quietly assumed a cycle length would be pretending to knowledge it does not have.
How to Use It
- Enter the first day of the last heat. Use the day the physical signs of proestrus appeared — vulvar swelling or discharge — not the day she first stood for a male. Getting this wrong shifts every downstream date by the same number of days. Our date difference calculator is useful if you only recorded the end of the season and need to work backwards.
- Enter her interval in months. If you have records from two or more previous seasons, use the observed gap. If you do not, the default of 7 months is the average the Merck Veterinary Manual reports across a normal range of 4 to 13 months, and it should be treated as a placeholder rather than a prediction.
- Set the phase lengths. Proestrus and estrus each run from about 3 days to about 3 weeks, averaging 9 days. If your vet has documented her phase lengths from cytology in a previous season, those numbers are far better than the averages.
- Choose how many cycles to project. One or two is a reasonable planning horizon. Eight is arithmetic, not a forecast.
- Read the result as a range, not a date. Put a reminder in the diary a fortnight either side of the projected start and watch for the physical signs.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
The next start date is the last start date plus the interestrous interval, added as calendar months so that a 7-month interval from 1 March lands on 1 October rather than on an approximate day count. Where the target month is short — adding one month to 31 January, for example — the date clamps to the last day of that month. The interval in days is then the actual difference between the two dates, which is why a 7-month interval starting 1 March 2026 reports 214 days rather than a rounded 210.
The receptive window opens at next start + proestrus days and closes at next start + proestrus days + estrus days. With the shipped defaults, a heat starting 1 October 2026 opens its window on 10 October and closes it on 19 October. The heat after next is the same month addition applied a second time, landing on 1 May 2027. The bar percentages are each phase length divided by the interval in days: 9 ÷ 214 is 4.2% for proestrus, 4.2% again for estrus, and the remaining 196 days — 91.6% — for diestrus and anestrus combined.
The phase structure and the figures used as defaults come from the Merck Veterinary Manual's account of breeding management of bitches, which sets out the four stages of the cycle and gives the interestrous interval as 4 to 13 months with a 7-month average.
Why the Calendar Cannot Time Ovulation
This is the section that matters most, and it is the reason the tool above refuses to nominate a best day. The bitch is a spontaneous ovulator, and the event that organises the whole cycle is the luteinising hormone surge, which the Merck Veterinary Manual describes as developing over 24 to 48 hours before returning to baseline. Primary oocytes are released 2 to 3 days after the LH peak, they then take a further 2 to 3 days to mature, and the mature secondary oocytes remain viable for another 2 to 3 days after that. The fertile period therefore sits several days downstream of a hormonal event that produces no outward sign at all.
None of that is visible on a calendar. Two bitches whose seasons start on the same day and last the same number of days can surge on days that are a week apart, and the same bitch can differ between her own seasons. This is why clinical practice does not time breeding from dates. The manual notes that for natural or fresh-semen breedings, practitioners work from the day progesterone first rises above baseline — designated day zero — and recommend insemination between days 3 and 6 measured from there. That day zero is established by a blood test, repeated every day or two, not by counting from the first spot of discharge.
So the honest reading of the window this page produces is: these are the days on which she is most likely to be behaviourally receptive, based on averages you supplied. They are the days to have already booked the progesterone testing, not the days to breed on.
Where This Sits Against Our Other Animal Tools
Two boundaries are worth stating plainly, because these tools are easy to confuse. This page runs the other way, projecting from a past season to a future one, and its whole subject is the period before mating. The second boundary is with the human tools on this site. Our period calculator and ovulation calculator model the human menstrual cycle, which is a fundamentally different physiology — monthly rather than twice-yearly, with menstrual bleeding at the start of a new cycle rather than the proestrual discharge that precedes receptivity in the bitch. The words overlap and the biology does not. Applying a human cycle model to a dog, or the reverse, produces nonsense.
Reading the Long Phases Nobody Charts
The bars above are worth looking at twice, because they show something that gets lost in discussions of heat. On the default settings, proestrus and estrus together account for about 8% of the interval. The other 92% is diestrus, when she is no longer receptive, and anestrus, the ovarian resting phase that the manual describes as a period of uterine involution and endometrial repair. Diestrus proceeds on essentially the same hormonal timetable whether or not she was mated, which is why the days immediately after a season are a poor time to draw conclusions about anything from behaviour alone.
The practical consequence is that kennelling, boarding, shows and travel can all be planned around a projected date with a fortnight's margin either side and will usually hold. That is a far more modest claim than "this tool tells you when to breed your dog", and it is the one this page makes.
How Age and Individual History Change the Interval
Puberty, according to Merck's account of reproductive management of the female small animal, typically arrives at 10 to 12 months with a range of 6 to 24 months, and larger dogs mature later than smaller ones. That matters for this calculator in a specific way: the first two or three cycles of a young bitch's life are the least regular she will ever have, so a projection based on a single first-to-second-season gap is the weakest projection the tool can produce. Intervals generally settle as she matures, and the number worth typing into the box is an average of two or three recorded gaps rather than the most recent one.
At the other end, intervals commonly lengthen with age, and unlike humans, dogs do not have a clean reproductive endpoint. A projection built on a 5-year-old's records will drift when applied to the same dog at 10. If the interval you are seeing has changed sharply in either direction, that is a fact for the vet rather than an input to adjust until the arithmetic looks tidy. The same applies to a season that arrives with unusual discharge, that seems not to end, or that is followed by lethargy or excessive drinking — none of which this page can assess and all of which warrant a call.
Keeping Records That Make the Next Projection Better
The single highest-value thing an owner can do for the accuracy of this tool is to write down four dates per season: the first day signs were noticed, the first day she would stand for a male, the last day she would, and the day discharge stopped. Four dates, twice a year. After two seasons you have a real interval and real phase lengths, and the defaults on this page become irrelevant to you, which is exactly the intended outcome.
Store them somewhere durable rather than in a phone note that will be lost with the phone — the same place you keep vaccination records and microchip details. What This Page Deliberately Does Not Do
It does not tell you whether to breed, at what age, or in which season. It does not estimate litter size, suggest a mating frequency, or recommend anything about diet, supplementation, or management during a season. It contains no husbandry instruction of any kind. Those questions have real answers, they differ by breed, individual and jurisdiction, and they are answered in a consulting room after an examination, not by a form on a website.

- Treating the average interval as her interval. Seven months is the middle of a 4-to-13-month range. Using it for a dog whose recorded gap is five months will put the projection two months late.
- Reading the receptive window as a fertile window. Behavioural receptivity and the fertile period overlap but are not the same thing, and only progesterone testing locates the latter.
- Projecting eight cycles and believing the eighth. Every projection compounds the same interval error, so a small deviation becomes months of drift.
- Using a passed date as reassurance. A season that does not arrive when projected is a reason to speak to a vet, not a reason to add a month and try again.
