The land area calculator above derives the size of a plot from the measurements you can actually take on the ground, then converts that single area into every unit a buyer, farmer, planner or surveyor is likely to ask for. Enter a rectangle and you get square feet, acres, hectares, square metres and square yards side by side. Enter four measured boundary lengths and a diagonal and it splits the plot into two triangles and adds them, which is how an irregular parcel is handled when you do not have a survey drawing.

Arb Digital publishes this as part of a free construction and land estimating set. The reason it exists separately from a unit converter is simple: a converter needs you to already know the area. This page starts one step earlier, from the tape measure, the wheel or the deed description, and produces the area itself. What This Land Area Calculator Does

It supports five plot geometries. A rectangle or square uses two sides. A triangle uses three measured side lengths and Heron's formula, so you never have to find a perpendicular height on sloping ground. A trapezoid uses the two parallel boundaries and the perpendicular distance between them, which is the standard shape for a plot fronting a curving road. An irregular quadrilateral uses four boundary lengths plus one diagonal, splitting the shape into two triangles. A circle uses a radius, for round paddocks, irrigation circles and turning areas.

Every result is reported simultaneously in square feet, square metres, square yards, acres and hectares, plus the perimeter in your working unit, because the perimeter is what you need if the next job is fencing. The optional price-per-acre field turns the area into an indicative land value; that is arithmetic only and is not a valuation.

This is deliberately different from our square footage calculator, which is aimed at rooms, floors and interior spaces measured in feet and inches. The boundary is scale and units: interior spaces are quoted in square feet, land parcels are quoted in acres and hectares, and land measurement carries survey units like chains that never appear indoors. How to Use It

  1. Choose the shape that matches your measurements. If you have four boundary lengths but no diagonal, the shape is not determined — a four-sided figure can flex without changing its side lengths, and its area changes as it does. Measure the diagonal.
  2. Set the unit you measured in. Feet, metres, yards or chains. Everything downstream converts automatically, so you never mix systems by hand.
  3. Enter the sides. The hint under the fields tells you which inputs the current shape uses; the others are ignored rather than silently included.
  4. Add the diagonal, height or radius. For an irregular four-sided plot this is the single most important measurement, because it fixes the shape.
  5. Optionally enter a price per acre. The tool multiplies it by the calculated acreage to give an indicative figure. Land is priced by many factors this does not know about.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

A rectangle is length × width. A circle is πr². A trapezoid is ½ × (a + b) × h where a and b are the two parallel sides and h is the perpendicular distance between them — the arithmetic mean of the two parallel sides multiplied by the height, a result set out in full at Wolfram MathWorld's trapezoid entry.

A triangle from three sides uses Heron's formula. With semi-perimeter s = (a + b + c) / 2, the area is √(s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)). This is the workhorse of land measurement because it needs only distances, and distances are what a tape or a wheel gives you. The irregular quadrilateral is two applications of Heron: the diagonal you measured is a shared side of both triangles, so the plot area is the sum of triangle (A, B, diagonal) and triangle (C, D, diagonal).

Conversions are exact by definition. One acre is 43,560 square feet or 4,046.8564224 square metres. One hectare is exactly 10,000 square metres, which is 2.471054 acres. One international foot is 0.3048 metres exactly, one yard is 0.9144 metres, and one surveyor's chain is 66 feet. Worked example with the loaded defaults: a 200 ft by 150 ft rectangle is 30,000 square feet, which is 30,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.6887 acres, 2,787.1 square metres, 0.2787 hectares and 3,333.3 square yards, with a 700 ft perimeter.

Four Side Lengths Do Not Define a Plot

This is the single most common error in hand-measured land. Three side lengths lock a triangle completely — that is why triangles are rigid and why surveyors triangulate. Four side lengths do not. Imagine a wire rectangle: push one corner and it becomes a parallelogram, the sides are unchanged, and the enclosed area has fallen. A 200 by 150 rectangle encloses 30,000 square feet, but the same four sides squashed to a 60-degree parallelogram enclose about 25,981 — a loss of over 13 percent with no change to any boundary measurement.

The fix is one extra measurement: the diagonal. Once you know a diagonal, the shape divides into two triangles that are each individually rigid, and the area is determined. If the plot has more than four sides, measure from a single interior point to every corner and sum the triangles, or measure a series of diagonals from one corner to fan the shape into triangles. That fanning method is the manual version of what survey software does automatically.

Slope, Plan Area and Which One Gets Sold

Land is bought, taxed and mapped in plan area — the area of its shadow on a horizontal plane — not the area of the actual sloping ground surface. A steep hillside parcel has considerably more surface than plan area, and the difference is not small: a uniform 20 percent grade adds about two percent, but a 45-degree slope adds 41 percent. If you drag a tape up a hillside you are measuring slope distance, and using that directly overstates the parcel.

Surveyors handle this by measuring horizontally, or by measuring the slope distance and the vertical angle and reducing to horizontal with a cosine. The practical rule for a tape measurement is to keep the tape level and use a plumb bob, or to measure in short level steps down the hill. Acres, Hectares and the Units in Old Deeds

An acre was originally the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day, standardised as one chain by one furlong — 66 feet by 660 feet, which is exactly 43,560 square feet. That history is why the number looks arbitrary and why old US deeds are written in chains and links, with 100 links to a chain. Ten square chains make an acre, which is why a chain-based description converts to acreage so neatly.

A hectare is the metric equivalent and is far tidier: 100 metres by 100 metres, exactly 10,000 square metres, about 2.47 acres. Most of the world outside the United States uses hectares for rural land and square metres for building plots. A complication worth knowing about in the US is the survey foot, which differed from the international foot by two parts per million; it was officially retired at the end of 2022, but it still appears in older legal descriptions and state plane coordinates. Over a small parcel the difference is negligible; over a township it is metres. The Bureau of Land Management's cadastral survey programme is the authority on how public land boundaries in the US are created and re-established.

What the Number Is and Is Not

An area calculated from your own measurements is an estimate of physical extent. It is not a legal boundary and it does not override anything. The recorded plat, the deed description and the monuments set in the ground are what define a parcel, and where a measurement disagrees with a monument, the monument generally controls. Fences are notoriously not boundaries, and a fence that has stood in the wrong place for decades can create its own legal complications that no calculator addresses.

Gross plot area is also not usable area. Setbacks, easements, rights of way, drainage reserves, wetland buffers and access strips all reduce what can actually be built on, sometimes dramatically on a narrow or awkward parcel. Zoning may set a minimum lot size, a maximum lot coverage or a floor area ratio, all of which reference the gross area you calculate here but constrain the result. Getting Field Measurements Right

Precision compounds when you multiply. A one percent error in each of two rectangle dimensions gives roughly a two percent error in the area, and on a five-acre parcel that is a tenth of an acre. Measure to the boundary monument, not to the fence, the hedge or the kerb. Measure each line twice from opposite ends and reconcile any disagreement rather than averaging it, because a disagreement usually means one of the two runs caught an obstruction.

A measuring wheel is fast and roughly one percent accurate on smooth ground, far worse on rough ground or long grass. A long tape is accurate but needs tension and level handling. A phone GPS is generally not good enough for a parcel boundary; consumer receivers are accurate to a few metres, which over a small lot is a large fraction of the area. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating four side lengths as enough — a quadrilateral flexes without changing its sides, so the diagonal is what fixes the area.
  • Using slope distance instead of horizontal distance — land is sold in plan area, and a tape dragged up a hill overstates the parcel.
  • Measuring to fences rather than monuments — a fence line is evidence of use, not a boundary, and the two are often different.
  • Confusing gross and usable area — setbacks, easements and buffers can remove a large share of what the calculation returns.
  • Mixing units mid-measurement — a plot measured partly in feet and partly in metres will be out by a factor of about eleven in area.
