Most square footage calculators do one rectangle. Real projects are not one rectangle. A flooring job is a living room, a hall, two bedrooms and a kitchen with an island bumped out of one corner. What you need is the sum of all of those, in one number, with a waste allowance and a price attached — because the sum is what you take to the supplier, not the individual rooms.

What This Square Footage Calculator Does

It computes the area of each shape, multiplies by how many identical copies the project contains, adds the results, then applies a waste percentage, converts the padded figure into a whole number of purchasable boxes, and prices that purchase.

Five shapes are supported. A rectangle needs a length and a width. An L-shape is entered as the enclosing rectangle with a notch subtracted, which is how almost every real L-shaped room is measured on site. A circle takes a diameter, not a radius, because a diameter is what you can stretch a tape across. A triangle takes a base and a perpendicular height, and a trapezoid takes the two parallel sides and the distance between them.

The unit selector covers feet, inches, yards, metres and centimetres and applies to every row at once, so the take-off stays in one system. Results always appear in both square feet and square metres, which matters more than it sounds: imported flooring and tile are often sold by the square metre while the room is measured in feet.

How to Use It

  1. Pick the unit you measured in. Enter the raw tape readings and let the tool convert. Hand conversions before entry are the most common source of a silently wrong total.
  2. Set the shape for area 1 and enter its dimensions. The labels rename themselves, so a circle asks for a diameter and a trapezoid asks for its two parallel sides.
  3. Use the repeat count for identical rooms. Three bedrooms at the same size means one row with a count of 3.
  4. Fill in as many of the four rows as the project needs and set the unused ones to "Not used". Any plan can be split into rectangles and triangles.
  5. Set the waste factor, the coverage per box and the unit price. Read the headline total, then the four supporting figures: net area, area including waste, whole units to buy, and material cost.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

Each shape has its own area formula, all of them elementary.

Rectangle = length × width. L-shape = (outer length × outer width) − (notch length × notch width). Circle = π × diameter² ÷ 4, which is the same as πr² written in terms of the measurement you can actually take. Triangle = base × perpendicular height ÷ 2. Trapezoid = (side a + side b) ÷ 2 × height, where a and b are the two parallel sides.

Each result is multiplied by its repeat count, then converted to square feet — the conversion is applied to the linear input before the multiplication, which keeps the intermediate numbers readable. Then total = Σ (shape area × count), padded area = total × (1 + waste ÷ 100), units to buy = ceiling(padded area ÷ coverage per unit), and cost = units × coverage × price.

The defaults work through like this. Area 1 is a 20 × 14 ft rectangle, 280 sq ft. Area 2 is a 16 × 12 ft L-shape less a 5 × 4 ft notch: 192 − 20 = 172 sq ft. Area 3 is a 12 × 4 ft hallway, 48 sq ft. Area 4 is a circle of 8 ft diameter: π × 64 ÷ 4 = 50.27 sq ft. The net total is 550.27 sq ft, or 51.12 m². A 10% waste factor takes it to 605.29 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box that is 30.26 boxes, rounding up to 31, which deliver 620 sq ft. At $4.50 per sq ft the material comes to $2,790.

Why the Raw Number and the Purchasable Number Are Both Shown

The calculator deliberately reports 605.29 sq ft and 620 sq ft as separate figures, because they answer different questions and people routinely quote the wrong one.

The raw padded figure is what you use to compare suppliers and work out a price per square foot. The rounded-up figure is what you can physically buy, and the gap between them is real money nobody put on the estimate. In the worked example the gap is 14.71 sq ft — under a box, so it looks trivial. Change the coverage to a 55 sq ft carton of engineered board and 605.29 sq ft becomes 11.01 cartons, rounds to 12, and you have bought 660 sq ft: nearly a whole carton of surplus, about $250 of it, invisible unless both numbers are shown.

Packaging size, not area, decides the last five percent of the bill. When two products are close on price per square foot, the one whose box size divides more cleanly into your padded area is often the cheaper purchase. Run the calculator twice with the two coverage figures before choosing.

Choosing a Waste Factor That Is Not a Guess

Ten percent is the number everyone repeats, and it is a reasonable default for a straightforward rectangular room laid square to the walls with a simple material. It is not a universal constant, and treating it as one is how projects run short.

Waste comes from three separate sources. The first is cutting loss: every plank, tile or sheet that meets a wall gets cut, and the offcut is only reusable if it is long enough to start the next row. Narrow rooms have proportionally more perimeter per square foot than wide ones, so a 4 ft hallway wastes far more per square foot than a 20 ft living room. The second is pattern matching — a repeating pattern or a directional grain forces you to discard material to keep the pattern aligned, and the larger the repeat, the larger the loss. The third is defect allowance, since natural materials arrive with a percentage of unusable pieces.

In practice: a plain square room with a plain material sits near 5–10%. Diagonal or herringbone layouts cut across every plank at an angle and typically need 15–20%. Rooms with many doorways, alcoves and angles trend high because each one adds cuts. If the material has been discontinued, the case for buying an extra box now is stronger than any percentage — you cannot re-order a dye lot.

What Square Footage Means Depends on Who Is Asking

The number this calculator produces is a measured floor area. That is the right number for buying material. It is not automatically the right number for a property listing, a lease or an appraisal, and confusing the two causes real disputes.

For residential appraisal in the United States, Fannie Mae requires appraisers to follow the ANSI Z765-2021 measuring standard, as set out in its Selling Guide section B4-1.3-05 on the improvements section of the appraisal report. That standard measures from the exterior of the walls and separates above-grade from below-grade space, so a finished basement does not add to the headline figure however good it looks. Commercial leases use a different family of standards again, where a tenant pays for a share of lobbies and corridors nobody would include in a flooring order.

The consequence: the square footage on a house listing is almost never the flooring you need to buy, and it is usually larger. Always measure the rooms.

Breaking an Awkward Plan Into Shapes That Add Up

Any floor plan bounded by straight lines can be decomposed into rectangles and triangles, and curved edges approximate well to circles or parts of them. The technique that keeps this reliable is to work either entirely by addition or entirely by subtraction within one area, never by mixing the two, and to draw the split on the plan before touching the calculator.

For a room with a chimney breast, measure the full rectangle and subtract the breast — that is the L-shape row exactly. For a bay, take the main rectangle as one row and the bay as its own, entered as a trapezoid if it is angled or a circle row if it is curved. For a stairwell opening you are not flooring, treat it as a notch. The one rule that matters is to account for every part of the plan exactly once. The commonest error in a manual take-off is double-counting the overlap where two measured rectangles share a strip, and it always makes the total too large, which feels safe and quietly costs money.

Pricing: Per Square Foot Is Only Half the Cost

The cost figure here is material only, and it is deliberately calculated on what you buy rather than on what you lay. That is the honest number for a purchase order. It is not a project budget.

A finished floor price is normally quoted as material plus labour plus preparation, and preparation is the item that moves: levelling compound, underlay, removal of the old covering and trim are priced separately and can add up to more than the material on a small job. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Converting units by hand before entering them — enter the raw tape reading and set the unit selector, or you will convert twice on one row and not at all on another.
  • Entering a radius where the tool asks for a diameter — this quadruples the circle's area, and it looks plausible enough to survive a quick check.
  • Applying waste to the rounded box count instead of the area — waste belongs on the area, before rounding, or you pad twice and buy a surplus box you never needed.
  • Double-counting the overlap between two measured rectangles — every part of the plan must be included exactly once, either by adding pieces or by subtracting notches, not both.
  • Using the listing or appraisal square footage as a material quantity — that figure is measured to a standard that includes wall thickness and excludes below-grade space, and it is the wrong number to order from.

Why does the calculator show two different totals?

One is the area including waste, which is what you compare quotes against. The other is the quantity you can actually purchase once it is rounded up to whole boxes. The gap between them is real cost, and it grows with box size, so a product sold in large cartons can end up more expensive than its price per square foot suggests.

How many square feet are in a square metre?

One square metre is 10.7639 square feet, and one square foot is 0.09290304 square metres. The calculator shows both figures for every result, which matters when material is sold by the square metre but the room was measured in feet, or the other way round.

Does square footage include the walls?

For buying floor material, no — you measure the usable floor inside the walls. For property measurement under the ANSI Z765-2021 standard that Fannie Mae requires appraisers to follow, above-grade area is measured from the exterior of the walls, so it is a larger figure. The two numbers are not interchangeable.

How do I measure an area with a curved edge?

Approximate it with a circle row, or split it into a rectangle plus a portion of a circle and enter each as its own area. A semicircular bay is a circle row with half the count, and a quarter-round corner is a quarter. Where the curve is irregular, break it into a series of trapezoids along its length.

Can I use this calculator for land or a garden?

Yes. The shapes and the waste factor work the same way for turf, mulch, gravel or paving as they do for indoor flooring. Set the units to yards or metres for large plots, and use the coverage field to match the bag or roll size your supplier sells.
