The roofing calculator above does the one piece of arithmetic that trips up almost every first-time roof estimate: a roof is not the same size as the building underneath it. A slope adds length to every rafter, and the steeper the slope, the bigger that gap becomes. Feed in the footprint you can measure from the ground, add the pitch, and the tool returns the actual sloped surface area in roofing squares, then converts that into bundles of shingles, rolls of underlayment, linear feet of ridge cap and a material cost.

What This Roofing Calculator Does

It converts a rectangular footprint and a rise-in-12 pitch into sloped roof area, expressed in roofing squares. One square is 100 square feet of roof surface, and it is the unit the entire trade quotes in — shingles, underlayment coverage, labour rates and tear-off charges are all priced per square rather than per square foot.

From that area the calculator derives four purchasing numbers. Bundles of asphalt shingles at three bundles per square, which covers standard three-tab and the great majority of architectural laminate products. Underlayment rolls at the coverage you select, defaulting to synthetic at 10 squares a roll. Ridge cap in linear feet, taken straight from the ridge length you enter. And a material cost from your own price per square, so the figure reflects what your local supplier actually charges rather than a national average that may be a year out of date.

The waste factor is applied to the area before any of those conversions, which is the order a real takeoff uses. Waste is material you buy and cut off, so it has to be in the number you order, not added as an afterthought at the till.

How to Use It

  1. Pick your units. Imperial takes feet and reports square feet; metric takes metres and reports square metres. Both give you roofing squares, because bundles are sold that way regardless of where you are.
  2. Enter the footprint length and width. Measure the outside of the walls at ground level. If the eaves overhang by a foot or more on each side, add that overhang to both dimensions — the roof covers it, so you have to sheet it.
  3. Enter the pitch as rise in 12. A roof that climbs 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run is 6/12, the most common residential pitch in North America and the default here.
  4. Set the waste factor. 10% suits a plain gable with two clean planes. Raise it to 15% or higher when the roof has hips, valleys, dormers or a lot of penetrations.
  5. Add the ridge length and your cost per square, then read the squares, bundles, rolls, ridge feet and total across the result panel.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

The whole calculation rests on one piece of geometry. A pitched roof plane is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose base is 12 and whose height is the rise. The ratio between the sloped length and the flat run is therefore multiplier = √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12. For a 6/12 pitch that is √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = √180 ÷ 12 = 13.4164 ÷ 12 = 1.118. Every square foot of footprint under that roof corresponds to 1.118 square feet of roof surface.

From there the chain is straightforward. Footprint area is length × width. Roof area is footprint area × multiplier. Squares are roof area ÷ 100. Squares with waste are squares × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Bundles are squares with waste × 3, rounded up. Underlayment rolls are squares with waste ÷ roll coverage, rounded up. Material cost is squares with waste × your price per square, calculated on the raw figure rather than the rounded one so you can see the true material value before rounding is applied.

Worked through with the defaults: a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint is 1,200 sq ft. At 6/12 the roof surface is 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft, or 13.42 squares. Add 10% waste and you need 14.76 squares, which rounds to 15 squares to purchase. That is 45 bundles and, on synthetic underlayment at 10 squares a roll, 2 rolls. Note the rounding cost: you are buying 15 squares to cover 13.42 squares of actual roof.

Why the Multiplier Matters More Than the Measurement

People measure footprints carefully and then guess the pitch, which is exactly backwards in terms of where the error lands. Being a foot out on a 40-foot wall is a 2.5% error in area. Guessing 6/12 when the roof is really 9/12 is a 7% error, and guessing 4/12 when it is 10/12 is a 15% error — a difference of more than two squares on a modest house, or roughly seven bundles of shingles.

The multiplier climbs slowly at low pitch and then accelerates. A 3/12 roof is only 3.1% larger than its footprint. A 6/12 is 11.8% larger. A 9/12 is 25% larger, and a 12/12 — a true 45-degree roof — is 41.4% larger. The Simple Gable Assumption and Where It Breaks

This calculator models a simple gable: two rectangular planes meeting at a single ridge, with no hips, valleys, dormers or changes of pitch. For that shape, footprint area × multiplier is exact, not an approximation. It is exact for a shed roof too, and for any roof whose planes all share the same pitch and project cleanly onto the footprint.

It is not exact once the roof gets complicated. A hip roof still projects onto the same footprint, so the total area formula holds, but the cutting waste rises sharply because every hip and valley means shingles cut at an angle and the offcuts discarded. Dormers add area that is not in the footprint at all. A cross-gable roof with wings of different pitches needs each section measured and multiplied separately, then summed. Cathedral or multi-level roofs where one plane sits above another can double-count or miss area entirely.

The practical rule: if you can draw the roof as one rectangle with one ridge, trust the number. If you cannot, use this tool to price the main body, then do a plane-by-plane takeoff for the rest. Choosing a Waste Factor Honestly

Waste is not padding and it is not contingency. It is the material that gets cut off and thrown away, and it is genuinely predictable from the roof's shape. On a plain gable, waste comes from starter courses, the ridge, and the ends of runs — 10% covers it comfortably. Add a hip and every course on the hip plane gets an angled cut; add a valley and both planes running into it get cut. Cut-up roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys routinely run 15% and can reach 20% on genuinely complex geometry.

Two things push waste the other way. Architectural laminate wastes slightly less than three-tab on random-cut work, because the pattern is less visible and offcuts are more reusable. A large, simple roof also wastes proportionally less than a small one, since fixed waste at starters and ridges is spread over more area.

Underestimating waste is worse than overestimating it. Running short mid-job means a second delivery, and on a shingle line with any colour variation between production runs, a second batch may not match the first.

Underlayment, Ridge Cap and the Parts That Get Forgotten

Underlayment coverage varies more than people expect. Synthetic underlayments are typically sold in rolls covering around 10 squares net of the overlap the manufacturer specifies. Number 15 felt covers roughly 4 squares a roll and number 30 covers about 2, because the heavier felt comes in shorter rolls. Those are the figures this calculator uses, and they are net coverage — the printed roll size before overlap is always larger, which is why reading the roll off its stated square footage overshoots.

Ridge cap is bought by the linear foot, not the square. On a straight gable the ridge length equals the building length, which is why the default here mirrors the footprint length. A hip roof adds the hip lines to the ridge total, and those are diagonal, so they are longer than they look on a plan. Cap shingles from a three-bundle-per-square laminate pack cover roughly 20 to 35 linear feet per bundle depending on exposure, so convert the linear feet this tool gives you using your specific product's stated coverage rather than assuming.

Then there is everything the squares figure does not include: drip edge along every eave and rake, ice-and-water shield in valleys and at eaves where code requires it, ridge or soffit ventilation, pipe boots, step flashing at every wall intersection, and nails at roughly four to five pounds per square. None of these are in the cost-per-square figure, and together they are frequently 15 to 25% of the material bill.

Reading the Cost Number Correctly

The cost this tool returns is materials only, at the price per square you enter, for the shingle field. It is deliberately narrow. A full roof replacement quote includes tear-off and disposal of the old roof, deck repair for any rotten sheathing found once the old layer is off, all the accessories listed above, labour, and often permit fees. Labour alone is commonly comparable to or larger than the shingle cost.

Use this figure the way a supplier would: as the material line on a quote you are checking. If a contractor's material allowance is far above what this calculates at your local shingle price, ask which accessories are included. If it is far below, ask whether underlayment and flashing are in there at all. Metric Roofs and the Square That Survives Translation

Roofing squares are a stubbornly imperial unit that has outlived the rest of the imperial system in many markets, because shingle packaging is standardised around it. That is why the metric mode here reports square metres and roofing squares side by side rather than dropping the square entirely. One roofing square is 100 sq ft, which is 9.2903 sq m.

Pitch translates less cleanly. Rise in 12 is an imperial idiom; much of Europe and Australia quotes roof slope in degrees instead. The conversion is degrees = arctan(rise ÷ 12), so 6/12 is 26.57 degrees and 12/12 is 45 degrees. If your plans give degrees, convert to rise in 12 with rise = 12 × tan(angle) before entering it here. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the floor area as the roof area — this skips the pitch multiplier entirely and undercounts by 3% on a shallow roof and over 40% on a steep one.
  • Forgetting the eave overhang — the roof extends past the walls, and a 12-inch overhang on all four sides of a 40 × 30 house adds 148 sq ft of footprint before the multiplier is even applied.
  • Applying waste after rounding to whole squares — round-up should be the last step, not the middle one, or you pay for the same rounding twice.
  • Assuming all underlayment rolls cover the same area — synthetic, #15 felt and #30 felt differ by a factor of five, and the printed roll size is before overlap.
  • Treating the material cost as a project quote — tear-off, disposal, deck repair, flashing, ventilation and labour are all outside the cost-per-square figure.
