The winning percentage calculator above converts a win-loss-tie record into a winning percentage, and it does so under both of the conventions in common use: counting each tie as half a win, and discarding ties from the denominator altogether. It also reports games played, games above .500, and how many of your remaining fixtures you would need to win to finish at a target percentage.

What This Winning Percentage Calculator Does

Enter wins, losses and ties. The headline figure treats each tie as half a win and divides by every game played. The supporting figure removes ties from both the numerator and the denominator, so it reads as wins divided by decided games. Both are displayed in either the North American decimal style, where .583 is written without a leading zero to three places, or as a straightforward percentage.

Games above .500 is the standings shorthand you see on scoreboards: the number of wins a team would need to lose, or losses it would need to win back, to reach an even record. It is half the difference between wins and losses, because every game moved across the line changes the gap by two.

The target projection answers a season-long question. Given the games you have left, how many must you win to end the year at a specific percentage? The tool computes the total win credit required at the projected end-of-season game count and subtracts the credit already banked, then rounds up, because you cannot win a fraction of a fixture.

How to Use It

  1. Enter the record. Wins, losses and ties in that order. Leave ties at zero for any sport that resolves every fixture.
  2. Compare the two conventions in the hero figure and the first grid item. If they match, the record contains no ties.
  3. Choose a display format. Decimal for North American leagues, percentage for almost everything else.
  4. Add games remaining and a target if you are planning a run-in. The target is a decimal — 0.6 for .600, 0.5 for an even record.
  5. Read games above .500 for the version of the same information that appears on a broadcast graphic.

The Formula and How It's Calculated

The half-win convention is the more widely used of the two:

Winning percentage = (wins + 0.5 × ties) ÷ (wins + losses + ties)

The ignore-ties convention drops them entirely:

Winning percentage = wins ÷ (wins + losses)

Work an example. A team with 92 wins, 65 losses and 5 ties has played 162 games. Under the half-win rule the numerator is 92 + 2.5 = 94.5, and 94.5 ÷ 162 = 0.58333, displayed as .583. Ignoring ties, the calculation is 92 ÷ 157 = 0.58599, displayed as .586. Games above .500 is (92 − 65) ÷ 2 = 13.5.

For the projection, suppose 20 games remain and the target is .600. The projected season length is 182 games, and .600 of that is 109.2 win credits. The team already holds 94.5, so it needs 14.7 more — rounded up, 15 wins from the remaining 20.

Why Two Conventions Exist

The half-win rule treats a tie as exactly what it is: a result in which neither side won and neither side lost, so each takes half the credit. It has the desirable property that a team's winning percentage and its opponents' collective winning percentage against it always sum to one. It is the convention used in North American professional standings; the National Football League has counted ties as half a win and half a loss since 1972, and its official football operations rules resource is where the league documents its competitive regulations.

The ignore-ties rule answers a narrower question: of the games that produced a winner, what share did this team win? Association football has traditionally used a straight wins-over-matches figure without treating draws as half wins, and this comparison of winning percentage conventions across sports sets out how different leagues handle it. Neither approach is wrong. They measure different things, and the mistake is only ever mixing them in one table.

How the Two Numbers Diverge

With no ties, the two figures are identical. Add ties and they separate in a predictable way. For a team above .500, counting ties as half a win pulls the percentage down toward .500, because each tie contributes less credit than the team's average game. For a team below .500 it pushes the percentage up, for the same reason in reverse.

The size of the gap depends on both the number of ties and how far the team is from an even record. A 92-65-5 record moves by only three thousandths between conventions. A 20-60-20 record, though, reads .300 under the half-win rule and .250 with ties excluded — a fifty-point gap from the same season. That is why comparing a soccer table's win percentage with a hockey standings figure is not a like-for-like comparison.

There is a neat way to sanity-check which direction the gap runs. Under the half-win rule a tie is worth exactly .500, so ties drag the whole record toward .500 in proportion to how many there are. Excluding ties simply deletes them, leaving the decided-game record untouched. If the two figures on this page straddle .500 in the way you expect, the record has been entered correctly; if they do not, a tie has probably been recorded in the wrong column.

Points Systems Are a Different Question

Several leagues abandoned winning percentage as a ranking device altogether. Association football's three-point system awards three for a win and one for a draw, which deliberately makes winning more than twice as valuable as drawing and cannot be reproduced by any winning percentage formula. The National Hockey League uses a points system in which an overtime or shootout loss still earns a point, so two teams with identical win totals can sit in different positions.

The practical consequence: if your league ranks on points, a winning percentage is a descriptive statistic rather than the standings order. It remains useful for comparing teams that have played different numbers of games, which is the one thing a raw points total cannot do — and points per game, not winning percentage, is the usual fix for that in a points league.

The projection field has the same caveat attached. It tells you the arithmetic requirement to reach a target, and nothing else. It assumes every remaining fixture is played, that none is abandoned or replayed, and that any tie in the run-in still carries half credit. If the calculator returns a requirement larger than the number of games left, the target has become unreachable by that route, which is why the field says so plainly rather than printing an impossible win count.

Where Winning Percentage Misleads

The most common misreading is treating winning percentage as a measure of team strength. It measures results, and results include schedule. A .600 record against the weakest half of a league and a .550 record against the strongest are not ranked correctly by the raw figure, which is why strength-of-schedule adjustments and rating systems such as Elo exist at all.

Small samples are the other trap. Early in a season, a percentage built on eight games swings by more than sixty points on a single result, and the three decimal places imply a precision the sample does not support. Percentages are also not additive: you cannot average two seasons' percentages to get a career figure. Recombine the raw wins, losses and ties and calculate once, exactly as you would when combining rates in our average percentage calculator.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing conventions in one table. Half-win and ignore-ties figures are not comparable once any team in the table has a tie.
  • Averaging percentages across seasons. Recombine the raw record instead, or short seasons get the same weight as long ones.
  • Counting shootout results as ties. Most leagues record them as wins and losses, which changes both figures.
