What This Heart Rate Recovery Calculator Does
It computes HRR at one minute as peak heart rate minus the reading at 60 seconds, and HRR at two minutes as peak minus the reading at 120 seconds. It reports the additional drop that happened during the second minute, the fall as a percentage of the peak, and, if you supply a resting heart rate, how far through the peak-to-rest range the recovery had travelled at each point.
The definitions come straight from the literature. A paper in Annals of Noninvasive Electrocardiology on the pathophysiology of exercise heart rate recovery defines HRR1 as “the decrease in heart rate from maximum to 1-minute post exercise” and HRR2 as the decrease from maximum to two minutes post exercise. Those are the two quantities this page computes, and it does not compute anything else.

How to Use It
- Record the peak heart rate. The highest value reached, taken at or immediately before you stopped.
- Record the heart rate at exactly one minute. Sixty seconds from the moment exercise ended, timed rather than estimated.
- Record two minutes if you want HRR2. Optional, but useful because the second minute behaves differently from the first.
- Note what you did during recovery. Standing still, walking slowly and lying down produce different curves from identical exercise.
- Keep the method identical if you ever compare two of your own measurements. Changing the protocol changes the number by more than most real changes do.
The Formula
HRR at one minute is peak heart rate − heart rate at 60 seconds. HRR at two minutes is peak heart rate − heart rate at 120 seconds. Both are expressed in beats per minute. The additional drop during the second minute is simply HRR2 minus HRR1.
The percentage figures are presentational rather than standard. The drop as a share of peak divides HRR by the peak heart rate. The share of the peak-to-rest range divides HRR by the difference between peak and resting heart rate, which answers a slightly different question: how far back toward baseline the heart rate had travelled, rather than how many beats it fell. Neither is a published index, and both are shown only because they make the same subtraction easier to picture.
Why the First Minute Behaves Differently From the Second
The two numbers are not interchangeable, and the reason is physiological. The same paper describes the recovery phase as involving a shift in autonomic tone, with parasympathetic reactivation and sympathetic withdrawal beginning when exercise stops, and notes that parasympathetic reactivation is prompt within the first minute. The first minute and the later minutes are therefore not measuring quite the same process, which is why the literature reports HRR1 and HRR2 as separate quantities rather than interpolating between them.
The practical consequence for anyone recording their own figures is that HRR1 and HRR2 must be labelled as such. A number recorded at 90 seconds is neither. Because the curve is steepest early and flattens afterwards, an error of a few seconds in the timing of the one-minute reading moves the result more than the same error at two minutes.
What Changes the Number Without Anything Changing
Heart-rate recovery is highly sensitive to how the measurement was taken, and this is the single most useful thing to understand before recording one. What you do in the recovery period is a large effect: continuing to walk slowly keeps heart rate elevated compared with standing still, and lying down lowers it faster still. The study cited below explicitly notes that its measures “were collected during passive recovery while participants remained standing”, and acknowledges that moving participants to a seated or supine position immediately after a maximal test is difficult in practice — a methodological detail that exists precisely because posture matters.
How hard the exercise was matters too. HRR is measured from a peak, and a peak reached at genuinely maximal effort is not the same starting point as a peak from a submaximal session. Beyond that, heat, hydration, caffeine, sleep, illness, altitude and the accuracy of the measuring device itself all move heart rate. A wrist optical sensor in particular is least reliable exactly where it matters most here: during rapid changes in heart rate immediately after hard exercise.
What This Number Cannot Tell You
A subtraction between two heart rates is a description of what happened, not an assessment of a person. It is worth being concrete about the limits, because the published evidence is itself cautious. A study in the Journal of Clinical Exercise Physiology on heart rate recovery as an assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness in young adults concluded that heart-rate recovery was not a valid indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness in sedentary young adults, finding no correlation between the two in that group.
That is a specific finding in a specific population, and it is exactly the kind of result that should stop anyone reading a recovery figure as a general fitness score. Heart-rate recovery has been studied extensively in clinical contexts, where it is interpreted alongside a full clinical picture by clinicians. This page does not attempt that interpretation, and no calculator should. If you have recorded a figure and want to know what it means, the person to ask is a physician.
Recording It Consistently If You Record It At All
If you are keeping your own log, consistency is worth more than precision. Fix the exercise: the same session, the same duration, the same intensity. Fix the recovery: the same posture, the same activity, the same environment. Fix the timing: use an actual timer from the moment exercise stops. Fix the device, and prefer a chest strap over a wrist sensor for the reasons above.
With all of that fixed, a change in the number at least means something changed. Without it, a difference between two readings is just as likely to be the protocol as anything else.
