Save percentage is the share of the shots on target a goalkeeper stops. It is the most-quoted goaltending statistic in ice hockey and one of the standard ones in football, and it is popular precisely because it is not distorted by how busy the goalkeeper's night was. What This Save Percentage Calculator Does

Enter shots faced, goals allowed and minutes played, and the calculator returns save percentage in the conventional form for your sport — three decimals in hockey, a percentage in football — along with the number of saves made, the goals against average per 60 or per 90 minutes, and the shot volume the goalkeeper handled per game.

The fourth figure, goals saved above average, needs one extra input: the league average save percentage for the season in question. Enter it and the calculator reports how many goals the goalkeeper prevented, or conceded, relative to what a league-average goalkeeper would have done facing the same number of shots. That is the number that separates a good save percentage in a high-scoring league from the same figure in a low-scoring one.

How to Use It

  1. Choose the sport. This sets whether the per-game rates use a 60 minute or a 90 minute base. It does not change the save percentage.
  2. Enter shots faced and goals allowed. Shots faced must be shots on target. If your source counts blocked or off-target attempts, the result will be wrong.
  3. Enter minutes played. Use actual minutes in goal, not games started, because pulled goaltenders and substitutions leave partial games.
  4. Enter the league average save percentage. Look it up for the exact season and competition; it moves year to year.
  5. Read all four together. Save percentage, goals against average and shot volume tell three different stories about the same sample.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

The NHL's official hockey glossary defines save percentage as saves divided by shots faced. Since saves are simply shots faced minus goals allowed, the practical form is:

SV% = (shots faced − goals allowed) ÷ shots faced

Goals against average is a rate over playing time rather than over shots:

GAA = goals allowed × minutes per game ÷ minutes played

where minutes per game is 60 in hockey and 90 in football. Goals saved above average compares the goalkeeper's stopping rate with the league's over the same workload:

GSAA = (SV% − league SV%) × shots faced

Running the defaults through: 1,200 shots faced with 100 goals allowed gives 1,100 saves and a save percentage of 1,100 ÷ 1,200 = 0.9167, written .917. Over 2,400 minutes the goals against average is 100 × 60 ÷ 2,400 = 2.50, and the shot volume is 1,200 × 60 ÷ 2,400 = 30 shots per 60 minutes. Why Save Percentage and Goals Against Average Disagree

The two headline goaltending numbers measure genuinely different things, and they routinely rank the same set of goalkeepers in different orders.

Save percentage is a per-shot rate. It asks: of the pucks or balls that reached the goalkeeper, what share did he stop? Shot volume divides out entirely. Goals against average is a per-time rate. It asks: how many goals went in per game's worth of minutes? Shot volume does not divide out at all.

The result is that a goalkeeper on a defensively weak team faces more shots, so even a strong save percentage produces a mediocre goals against average. A goalkeeper behind a dominant defence can post a flattering goals against average with an ordinary save percentage, simply because he faces eighteen shots a night instead of thirty-five. The shots-faced-per-game figure in the results grid is there specifically to make that visible.

Neither statistic is the honest one on its own. Goals against average tells you what the team conceded with this goalkeeper in net; save percentage tells you how well the goalkeeper handled what arrived. They answer different questions and both belong in the conversation.

The Shot Quality Problem

Save percentage treats every shot on target as equivalent. A speculative effort from the halfway line and a breakaway from six yards each count as one shot. Over a large sample the mix tends to even out between goalkeepers, which is why the raw statistic remains useful — but over a small sample it does not, and that is where most misreadings come from.

This is the reason modern analysis has moved towards expected-goals models, which weight every shot by the historical conversion rate of shots taken from that location, angle and situation. A goalkeeper facing a barrage of low-danger shots will post a high save percentage that says more about his defence than about him. One facing a steady diet of high-danger chances will post a lower figure while performing better relative to what was thrown at him.

Splitting a goalkeeper's record by situation is a practical partial fix. Even-strength save percentage strips out penalty-kill situations, where shot quality is systematically higher and the goalkeeper has less help. A goalkeeper who looks average overall but excellent at even strength is being dragged down by his team's discipline rather than his own play. Sample Size and What a Hot Month Means

Goaltending is among the noisiest positions in team sport, and save percentage over short spans is close to meaningless. A goalkeeper facing 200 shots — roughly seven or eight hockey games — will see his save percentage swing by dozens of points on the strength of two or three bounces.

The arithmetic makes this concrete. At 200 shots faced, a single extra goal moves save percentage by five points. At 1,800 shots, a full season's workload, that same goal moves it by less than a point. Any judgement made from a handful of games is a judgement about variance, not about the goalkeeper.

The same rule applies to goals saved above average, which is a counting statistic and therefore scales with workload. A goalkeeper with a modest positive rate over a full season can accumulate a larger GSAA than a spectacular goalkeeper who played half the games. Read it as total contribution rather than as quality per shot, and read the save percentage alongside it for the rate. Comparing Goalkeepers Across Leagues and Eras

League-wide save percentage is not a constant. It has moved substantially over time in both hockey and football, driven by equipment changes, rule changes, tactical shifts, playing-surface quality and the way shots are recorded. A save percentage that is unremarkable in one league and season can be well above average in another.

That is what goals saved above average is for. By subtracting the league figure, it converts a raw rate into a relative one, and relative figures survive comparison across seasons in a way raw rates do not. If you are comparing two goalkeepers from different competitions, look up each one's league average for that specific season rather than using a single number for both.

Recording practice matters too. Different competitions and different data providers have historically applied different thresholds for what counts as a shot on target, particularly for deflections and shots that a defender partially blocks. Two published save percentages for the same goalkeeper can differ for that reason alone, so check which source your comparison figures came from before drawing conclusions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Counting all shot attempts. Save percentage uses shots on target only. Including blocked and off-target attempts inflates the result substantially.
  • Using games played instead of minutes. Substitutions and pulled goaltenders leave partial games, and games played will distort goals against average.
  • Comparing raw figures across seasons. League-wide save percentage moves over time, so a raw number needs its league context before it means anything.
  • Judging from a handful of games. At 200 shots faced, one goal moves save percentage by five points. Short samples measure variance, not ability.
  • Treating goals against average as a goalkeeper rating. It is heavily driven by how many shots the team allows, which is largely outside the goalkeeper's control.
