How to Use It
- Enter household size and your own usage. If you want a real answer rather than a plausible one, count sheets for two days — the guess most people make is low.
- Take sheets per roll from the pack you actually buy. This is the number that makes brands incomparable, and the pack states it.
- Enter how many rolls are in the house right now, and how many days of cover you would like to keep.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated
Everything runs through sheets:
Sheets per day = people × uses per day × sheets per use
Rolls per day = sheets per day ÷ sheets per roll, and days of cover = rolls in stock ÷ rolls per day
Work through the defaults. Three people at six uses a day and eight sheets a use is 3 × 6 × 8 = 144 sheets a day. At 160 sheets a roll that is 144 ÷ 160 = 0.90 rolls a day, or 6.30 rolls a week. A stock of 24 rolls therefore lasts 24 ÷ 0.90 = 26.7 days, a little under four weeks.
Over a year, 0.90 rolls a day is 328.5 rolls. At 12 rolls a pack for 9.60, each roll costs 0.80, so the annual bill is 328.5 × 0.80 = 262.80 — about 87.60 per person. And to reach 60 days of cover you would need 60 × 0.90 = 54 rolls; holding 24 already, that is 30 more, which is 2.5 packs and so 3 packs to buy.
Why Rolls Are the Wrong Unit to Shop In
The reason this calculation is worth doing at all is that the packaging is designed to defeat comparison. A pack advertising twelve rolls may contain anywhere from about 1,200 to well over 4,000 sheets depending on the brand and the roll designation, and terms like double, mega and super are not standardised between manufacturers. Two packs sitting next to each other at the same price can differ by a factor of three in what you are actually buying.
Ply compounds it. A two-ply sheet and a three-ply sheet are both one sheet, but people use fewer of the thicker one — not proportionally fewer, which is the point. Sheet size differs too, and a smaller sheet at a higher count can be less paper overall. None of this is visible in a headline roll count.
The fix is the same one that works everywhere in a supermarket: convert to a common unit and compare that.
