Tip: the waist radius uses the circle formula, not a guess, so measure the waist where the band will actually sit. A half-inch error in the measurement changes the radius by less than a tenth of an inch, but it changes the waist opening by the full half-inch.

A circle skirt is one of the few garments whose pattern is pure geometry. There are no darts to draft, no bodice block to trace and no grading rules to apply — there is a waist hole, a radius and a hem. This circle skirt calculator does the arithmetic that turns a waist measurement into a cutting radius, and then works out how much cloth the resulting quarter-circle pieces need at the fabric width you are buying.

It does not lay out a multi-piece garment pattern and it does not size a waistband.

What This Circle Skirt Calculator Does

It takes your waist measurement plus whatever ease you want, and treats that total as the circumference of a circle. From that it derives the radius of the hole you cut, adds the finished length and the hem allowance to get the outer cutting radius, and then works out the flat area the skirt occupies. Finally it fits the pieces onto the fabric width you entered and reports the length to buy, in both yards and metres.

The supporting figures give the waist-hole cutting radius — which is smaller than the true waist radius by the seam allowance — the full cutting radius from centre to hem edge, the finished hem circumference, and the layout the yardage assumes.

It cannot handle a circle, because a circle skirt's cutting piece is not a rectangle you can size by eye. How to Use It

  1. Measure the waist where the band will sit. A natural waist and a hip-height waistband are several inches apart, and the radius follows whichever you measure.
  2. Add ease. Half an inch is typical for a zipped waistband. Use zero for an elasticated waist, because the elastic supplies the give.
  3. Choose the fullness. A full circle drapes in soft even folds and eats fabric; a half circle uses roughly half as much and hangs with fewer, deeper folds.
  4. Enter the finished length and your allowances. The hem allowance is added to the cutting radius, so a deep hem makes the piece bigger.
  5. Set the usable fabric width. Subtract the selvedges from the bolt width before entering it — they are unusable and often distorted.

The Formula: Circumference, Radius and Cutting Radius

Everything follows from the circumference of a circle, C = 2πr, rearranged to r = C ÷ (2π). For a skirt that is only part of a circle, the waist arc is that fraction of the whole circumference, so the radius grows to compensate. The general form is:

waist radius = (waist + ease) ÷ (2π × fullness fraction), where the fullness fraction is 1 for a full circle, 0.75, 0.5 or 0.25 for the partial versions.

Worked example. A 28-inch waist with half an inch of ease gives 28.5 inches of waist arc. For a full circle the radius is 28.5 ÷ 6.2832 = 4.54 inches. You then cut the hole half an inch smaller than that — 4.04 inches — so that once the seam allowance is turned under, the finished opening is 28.5 inches. Add the 24-inch finished length and a 1-inch hem allowance to the true radius and the outer cutting radius is 4.54 + 24 + 1 = 29.54 inches.

Notice what happens for a half circle with the same numbers: the radius doubles to 9.07 inches, because the same waist arc now has to span only 180 degrees. That is the whole reason a half-circle skirt uses less fabric despite having a bigger waist radius — the piece covers a quarter of the area of the full version's flat circle.

How the Yardage Is Worked Out

The calculator treats every circle skirt as a number of quarter-circle pieces: four for a full circle, three for a three-quarter, two for a half and one for a quarter. Each quarter fits inside a square whose side is the outer cutting radius, and squares are easy to fit to a bolt width.

It divides the usable width by the cutting radius to see how many pieces sit side by side, then divides the number of pieces by that to get the number of rows, and multiplies the rows by the cutting radius to get the fabric length. With a 29.54-inch radius on 58-inch usable cloth, two quarters would need 59.08 inches of width and only just fail to fit, so the pieces go one per row: four rows at 29.54 inches is 118.2 inches, or about 3.28 yards. Shortening the skirt by an inch drops the radius under 29 inches, two pieces then fit across, and the requirement halves to roughly 1.6 yards. That cliff edge is real and it is why you should run your own numbers rather than trust a rule of thumb.

This is a safe layout rather than the tightest possible one. If the fabric is wide enough to take twice the cutting radius, you can cut two quarters as a single half-circle and lose one seam, and if it is wide enough for the full diameter you can cut the whole skirt on the fold in one piece. Neither of those reduces the length you buy, so the number the tool gives you still holds. Where the estimate is deliberately generous is with fabrics that need matching or have a nap — see below.

Why the Hem Gets Enormous and What to Do About It

The finished hem circumference on a full circle skirt is 2π times the finished radius — the waist radius plus the length — which for the worked example is about 179 inches, close to five yards of edge to finish on a 24-inch skirt. That length is the single biggest practical difference between a circle skirt and a gathered one, and it drives three decisions.

First, the hem allowance should be small. A deep turned hem on a curved edge has to ease a much longer outer edge into a shorter inner one, which puckers. A quarter-inch rolled hem, a narrow double fold or a bias binding all behave better than the inch you would use on a straight edge, and every inch you save also comes off the cutting radius.

Second, the skirt needs to hang before it is hemmed. Parts of a circle skirt's hem run on the true bias, which stretches under its own weight while the parts on the straight grain do not. Hang the assembled skirt for a day or two, then level the hem from the floor rather than measuring down from the waist. If you hem immediately, the bias sections drop afterwards and the hemline goes wavy.

Third, the hem length is why heavy fabrics behave badly. All that weight hangs from a small waist seam, and a stiff cloth will stand away from the body instead of falling into folds. Lighter fabrics with good drape are what give a circle skirt its shape.

Fabric Width, Nap and Directional Prints

Fabric is sold by length at a fixed width, and both matter here. The bolt width sets how many quarter pieces fit across, and because the pieces are large squares, a small change in width can flip the layout from two-across to one-across and double the length you need. Always subtract the selvedges before you calculate: they are woven more tightly than the body of the cloth and will pull the hem out of true if you include them.

Directional fabrics change the sum. A one-way print, a nap such as velvet or corduroy, or a fabric with a sheen has to have every piece cut in the same orientation, which removes the option of nesting pieces head-to-toe and typically adds a quarter to the total. Plaids and stripes need extra length equal to one full pattern repeat for each piece you want to match, and on a circle skirt matching is close to impossible anyway because the seam lines run across the grain at every angle.

One further note on measurement itself: fabric width is quoted in inches in the US and centimetres almost everywhere else, and the conversion is exact rather than approximate. The NIST reference on SI units of length gives the inch as exactly 25.4 mm, so a 60-inch bolt is exactly 152.4 cm. The rules on how goods sold by length must be measured and labelled sit in NIST Handbook 130, the uniform laws and regulations that US states adopt for legal metrology.

Choosing the Fullness

Fullness is a trade between drape and cost, and the relationship is not linear. Halving the fullness does not halve the fabric — it quarters the flat area of the circle while doubling the radius, and the practical saving lands somewhere in between depending on how the pieces fit the bolt. Run the numbers both ways before you decide.

A full circle gives even, closely spaced folds all the way round and the classic mid-century silhouette. A three-quarter circle keeps most of that with a noticeably lighter hem. A half circle gives an A-line shape with folds concentrated at the sides. A quarter circle is barely flared and behaves more like a straight skirt with a little swing. Longer skirts push you towards less fullness, because the cutting radius grows with length and the fabric requirement grows with the square of it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Cutting the waist hole at the true radius — it must be smaller by the seam allowance, or the finished waist ends up too big by twice the allowance.
  • Using the bolt width instead of the usable width — selvedges are not usable cloth and including them can push the layout past what actually fits.
  • Hemming straight after sewing — the bias sections drop over the first day or two. Hang the skirt, then level the hem from the floor.
  • Planning a deep hem — a wide turned hem on a curve puckers badly. Narrow hems and bias binding are what curved edges want.
  • Forgetting nap and one-way prints — if every piece has to face the same way you lose the ability to nest them and need extra length.

How do I work out the waist radius for a circle skirt?

Divide the waist measurement plus ease by 6.2832, which is two pi, for a full circle. For a half circle divide by 3.1416, and for a quarter circle divide by 1.5708. Then cut the hole smaller by your seam allowance.

How much fabric does a full circle skirt need?

It depends on the cutting radius and the bolt width. For a 28-inch waist and a 24-inch length on 58-inch usable cloth the pieces are too wide to sit two across, so the skirt needs about 3.28 yards. Trimming an inch off the length lets two fit and roughly halves the requirement.

Why is my waist opening too big after sewing?

Almost always because the hole was cut at the true waist radius instead of the seam-allowance-reduced radius. The cut opening has to be smaller than the finished one, since the seam allowance is turned inside.

Does a half circle skirt use half the fabric?

Not exactly. Halving the fullness quarters the flat area but doubles the radius, so the saving depends on how the larger pieces fit the bolt width. Run both options through the calculator before deciding.

How deep should the hem allowance be?

Narrow. A curved hem has a much longer outer edge than inner edge, so a deep turned hem puckers. A quarter-inch rolled hem or a bias binding sits flat where a one-inch fold will not.

Why does the hem go wavy after a few days?

Because parts of a circle hem lie on the true bias and stretch under the skirt's own weight while the straight-grain parts do not. Hang the finished skirt for a day or two before levelling the hem from the floor.

Do I need extra fabric for a printed fabric?

Yes if the print is one-way or the fabric has a nap, because every piece has to be cut in the same direction and cannot be nested. Add roughly a quarter to the length, and add a full pattern repeat for each piece you intend to match.
