The paper thickness calculator above sits on one relationship: caliper, pages per inch, bulk and density are four ways of saying the same thing, and every printing trade uses a different one. Give the tool whichever you have and it produces the other three, then applies them to a sheet count to give a stack height or a book spine width.

What This Paper Thickness Calculator Does

Choose which figure you have. If you have a caliper, enter it in micrometres, millimetres, points or inches. If you have a PPI figure from a book printer, enter that instead. If you have a mill spec giving grammage and bulk, enter those and the caliper is derived. Whichever route you take, the grid shows all four figures so you can quote the paper in any trade's language.

The headline applies the caliper to your sheet count. Enter 500 sheets and you get the height of a ream on the desk. Enter a cover thickness and the same arithmetic becomes a spine width for a perfect-bound book, which is the calculation cover designers need and get wrong most often.

What the tool deliberately does not do is guess a caliper from a weight. That is not a conversion, it is an estimate, and a poor one — which is the single most important thing on this page.

How to Use It

  1. Choose whether you are starting from caliper, PPI, or grammage and bulk.
  2. Enter that figure, in the unit your specification sheet uses.
  3. Enter the number of sheets in the stack, or for a book, the page count divided by two.
  4. For a book spine, add the combined thickness of both cover boards in millimetres.
  5. Read the stack height in the headline and the equivalent caliper, PPI, bulk and sheets-per-inch figures in the grid.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

Four relationships do all the work.

Stack height = sheets × caliper, plus the cover thickness if there is one.

PPI = 2 ÷ caliper in inches. The 2 is there because a sheet has two pages, one on each side, and the book trade counts pages.

Bulk (cm³/g) = caliper in micrometres ÷ grammage, and density in g/cm³ is the reciprocal of bulk — that is, grammage divided by caliper.

Sheets per inch = 1 ÷ caliper in inches, which is simply PPI halved.

Work the defaults through. A sheet of 80 gsm paper with a bulk of 1.25 cm³/g has a caliper of 80 × 1.25 = 100 µm, which is 0.1 mm, or 0.003937 inches, or 3.94 points. A stack of 500 such sheets is 500 × 0.1 mm = 50 mm, which is 1.97 inches. PPI is 2 ÷ 0.003937 = 508, and sheets per inch is 254. Its density is 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8 g/cm³.

For a book spine, take a 320-page book on that paper. That is 160 sheets, so the text block is 160 × 0.1 = 16 mm, and adding 3 mm of cover board gives a 19 mm spine.

Why You Cannot Get Thickness From Weight

This is the trap, and it catches experienced people. Grammage measures mass per unit area; caliper measures thickness. The bridge between them is density, and density varies enormously between papers.

Grammage and basis weight are defined as mass per area "regardless of thickness" — the standards are explicit about that. A heavily calendered coated sheet is pressed dense and thin; an uncoated bulky book paper of the identical grammage is airy and noticeably thicker. Two 80 gsm papers can differ in caliper by a third, and over a 300-page book that is centimetres of spine.

This is exactly why book printers quote PPI rather than weight, and why any spine calculation should start from the caliper or PPI of the specific stock being printed on, not from its weight. If you are quoting a job and only have a weight, ask the printer for the caliper. Guessing produces covers that do not fit.

It is also why this tool takes bulk as an input rather than shipping a lookup table of papers. A table would have to be brand-specific and would go out of date, and a wrong caliper is worse than no caliper.

How This Differs From Our Paper Weight Calculator

Points, Microns, Mils and Other Ways to Say the Same Thing

Caliper units are a small minefield. In the North American paperboard trade a point is one thousandth of an inch, so 12 pt board is 0.012 inches or about 305 µm. That point has nothing whatever to do with the typographic point used for type sizes, which is about 0.353 mm. A mil is the same as a caliper point — also a thousandth of an inch — and is common in film and laminate specifications.

Europe works in micrometres, usually written µm and sometimes called microns. One thousandth of an inch is 25.4 µm, so the conversion is easy but the factor is not one people carry in their heads. The tool accepts all four and converts internally, and the length converter handles the same conversions outside a paper context.

One more distinction is worth knowing: caliper is measured under a specified pressure by a micrometer with a defined anvil size, because paper compresses. Measured thickness therefore depends on the measurement standard, and a stack of 500 sheets is usually slightly less than 500 times the single-sheet caliper because air is squeezed out of the pile. For a printed book that difference is small; for a very bulky uncoated stock it is worth allowing a millimetre or two on the spine.

Where the Number Actually Matters

Spine width is the obvious one. Perfect-bound covers are printed flat, and if the spine is a few millimetres out the fold lines land on the front panel and the whole print run is scrap. That is why printers ask for a page count and a paper name rather than a weight.

Feeder and finishing limits are the second. Folders, saddle stitchers and envelope inserters have maximum thicknesses, and it is the caliper that determines whether a folded signature fits. A heavier but denser sheet can pass where a lighter, bulkier one jams.

Postal and packing thresholds are the third. Letter formats have thickness limits as well as weight limits, and a bulky uncoated card can breach the thickness threshold while still being well inside the weight one. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Estimating caliper from grammage. Two papers of the same weight can differ in thickness by a third. Get the caliper from the specification sheet.
  • Confusing pages with sheets. PPI counts pages, and a sheet is two pages. Halve the page count before multiplying by caliper.
  • Mixing up the two kinds of point. A caliper point is a thousandth of an inch. A typographic point is about 0.353 mm. They are unrelated.
  • Forgetting the cover boards. A spine is the text block plus both boards plus the covering material. Leaving them out makes every cover too narrow.
  • Assuming a stack is exactly sheets times caliper. Paper compresses under its own weight, so a large pile settles slightly below the arithmetic figure.
