Paper Quantity Converter — sheets, quires, reams, bundles and bales

This is the whole point of the tool. A quire is 25 sheets under the modern convention and 24 under the older one, and everything above it changes with it. The printer's ream is a ream size only; bundles and bales are derived from it at the standard 2 and 10 reams.

The paper quantity converter above deals only with counts. Give it a number of sheets, quires, reams, bundles, bales or pallets and it converts to all the others, under whichever of the three historical conventions you select. It does not weigh anything and it does not measure anything — it answers the question "how many sheets is that?", which sounds trivial until you discover that a quire is 24 sheets in one trade and 25 in another.

What This Paper Quantity Converter Does

It converts between six counting units in both directions, using one of three published conventions.

Under the modern convention a quire is 25 sheets, a ream is 500 sheets or 20 quires, a bundle is 1,000 sheets or 2 reams, a bale is 5,000 sheets or 10 reams, and a pallet in the US trade is 200,000 sheets — 40 bales, or 40 cases of 10 reams. Under the traditional short convention a quire is 24 sheets and a short ream is 480 sheets, which makes a bundle 960 and a bale 4,800. The printer's ream, sometimes called a perfect ream, is 516 sheets: 500 usable sheets plus an allowance for spoilage during printing.

Alongside the conversion there is a practical field. Enter the number of sheets your job actually needs, add a spoilage percentage if you want one, and the note tells you how many whole reams you have to buy and how many sheets you will have left over. Paper is not sold by the sheet, so that gap is usually the number people are really after.

How to Use It

  1. Enter a quantity and choose the unit it is currently expressed in.
  2. Choose the convention. If your supplier quotes reams of 500, that is the modern one; if a specialist paper is quoted at 480, choose the short convention.
  3. Read the sheet total in the headline and the equivalents in the grid.
  4. Optionally enter the sheets your job needs, plus a spoilage percentage, to see how many reams to order.
  5. Check the convention line under the result before you place the order — the same word means two different quantities.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

Everything routes through sheets. The tool converts your input to a sheet count, then divides that back out into the other units.

Sheets = quantity × sheets per unit, where under the modern convention the multipliers are 1 for a sheet, 25 for a quire, 500 for a ream, 1,000 for a bundle, 5,000 for a bale and 200,000 for a pallet.

Work through the default. Three bales under the modern convention is 3 × 5,000 = 15,000 sheets. Divided back out that is 15,000 ÷ 25 = 600 quires, 15,000 ÷ 500 = 30 reams, and 15,000 ÷ 1,000 = 15 bundles. As a share of a pallet it is 15,000 ÷ 200,000 = 0.075 pallets.

Switch to the short convention and the same three bales become 3 × 4,800 = 14,400 sheets, which is 600 quires of 24, 30 short reams of 480, and 15 bundles of 960. The quire and ream counts are identical; the sheet total is 600 lower. That is the trap this tool exists to expose: a quantity expressed in reams tells you nothing about the number of sheets until you know which ream is meant.

The ordering line works differently. Sheets needed is multiplied by (1 + spoilage ÷ 100), then divided by the sheets in a ream and rounded up, because you cannot buy part of a ream. For 1,200 sheets with 10% spoilage under the modern convention: 1,200 × 1.1 = 1,320, divided by 500 is 2.64, rounded up to 3 reams, which is 1,500 sheets and leaves 180 spare.

Why a Quire Is Sometimes 24 and Sometimes 25

The quire began as a physical thing rather than a number: a gathering of folded sheets nested inside one another to be bound into a book. Its count therefore followed the folding, and historically ran to 4, 8, 12, 15, 18, 20, 24 or 25 sheets depending on the paper and the trade.

Two values survived into commercial use. The 24-sheet quire went with the 480-sheet ream, which is 20 quires of 24, and was the standard for handmade and specialist papers. The 25-sheet quire went with the 500-sheet ream, 20 quires of 25, and became the standard for machine-made paper. Wikipedia's article on units of paper quantity sets out both, along with the printer's ream of 516 and older ream values of 472 and 504.

The modern position is that the 500-sheet ream is the international standard, and ISO 4046, the vocabulary standard for paper and board, deprecates using the word "ream" for any other quantity — its guidance is that a different term such as "pack" should be used instead. In practice the older values persist for tissue, greaseproof, blotting and handmade papers, which are still sold in the UK in short reams of 480 sheets. PaperSizes.org's page on reams and quires lists the modern values and notes that a pallet is 200,000 sheets in the US but 50,000 or 125,000 in the UK depending on the supplier.

How This Differs From Our Paper Weight Calculator

It converts counts — and specifically it converts the traditional counting units the weight calculator does not know about, because that tool takes a raw sheet number and does not care whether you got it from a ream, a bundle or a bale. The natural workflow is to use this page to turn "four bales" into a sheet count, then paste that sheet count into the weight calculator to find out what the delivery will weigh. Pallets, Cases and the Units That Are Not Standard

The counting units get less reliable the larger they get, and it is worth knowing where the certainty stops.

Sheets, quires and reams are firm once the convention is named. Bundles and bales are firm by definition — 2 reams and 10 reams respectively — but you will occasionally see "bundle" used loosely by a supplier to mean whatever is in one wrapped package, so check the sheet count on the label rather than assuming.

Pallets are not standard at all. The 200,000-sheet figure used here is the common US arrangement of 40 cases holding 10 reams each, but UK pallets are frequently 50,000 or 125,000 sheets, and a pallet of heavy board is a completely different count from a pallet of copier paper because the constraint is weight and height, not sheets. Treat a pallet figure as a supplier-specific quantity and confirm it. The final complication is that "sheets" can mean parent sheets or finished sheets. A parent sheet cut four-up produces four finished pages, so a ream of parent stock can yield 2,000 finished pieces. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming a ream is always 500. Specialist papers are still sold in short reams of 480. The word alone does not tell you the count.
  • Mixing conventions in one calculation. Twenty quires of 25 is a 500-sheet ream; twenty quires of 24 is a 480-sheet ream. Pick one convention and stay in it.
  • Treating a pallet as a fixed number of sheets. It is a supplier-specific quantity that varies by country, by paper and by weight. Confirm it before ordering.
  • Rounding reams down. You cannot buy 2.64 reams. Always round up, and expect leftovers.
  • Confusing parent sheets with finished pieces. One parent sheet cut four-up is four finished items, so the sheet count and the job count are different numbers.
