A passer rating calculator compresses five raw passing statistics into a single number. Two versions exist and they disagree, sometimes dramatically, on the same line of a box score. What This Passer Rating Calculator Does
It takes the five inputs both formulas need and returns both ratings, plus the four underlying rate statistics and the four NFL components broken out individually.
The component breakdown is the part worth having. The NFL rating is an average of four sub-scores, each of which is capped at 2.375 and floored at zero, and those caps are where most of the metric's strange behaviour comes from. A quarterback who completes 80% of passes gets no more credit than one who completes 77.5%, because both hit the ceiling. Seeing which components are capped tells you immediately whether a rating is being held back by one weak category or artificially compressed by an exceptional one.
The comparison selector puts a reference figure next to the result — the all-average baseline of 66.7, a round 100, or the maximum of 158.3 — so a rating has something to sit against rather than floating on its own.
How to Use It
- Use pass attempts, not dropbacks. Sacks are not attempts. They do not appear in either formula, which is one of the metric's real weaknesses rather than an entry error.
- Use gross passing yards. Sack yardage is not deducted, and yards after the catch are included in full.
- Enter a single game or a whole season. The formulas are rate-based, so both work at any sample size, though small samples produce wild figures.
- Read the bars for capped components. A bar at 100% is at its ceiling and cannot contribute more.
- Compare the two ratings in the line beneath the headline. A large gap between the NFL and NCAA figures usually means the passing line is unusual in a specific way, described below.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
The NFL passer rating is built from four components, each computed as a rate and then clamped to the range 0 to 2.375:
a = ((completions ÷ attempts) − 0.3) × 5. b = ((yards ÷ attempts) − 3) × 0.25. c = (touchdowns ÷ attempts) × 20. d = 2.375 − ((interceptions ÷ attempts) × 25). The rating is then ((a + b + c + d) ÷ 6) × 100. Because each component maxes at 2.375, the highest achievable rating is (4 × 2.375 ÷ 6) × 100 = 158.3, which is the figure the league itself uses for a perfect game — the NFL's own account of the league's perfect passer ratings notes that a perfect rating requires a minimum of 20 attempts to qualify.
The NCAA passing efficiency rating takes a different shape entirely, with no caps and no floors: ((8.4 × yards) + (330 × touchdowns) − (200 × interceptions) + (100 × completions)) ÷ attempts. College football's governing body, the NCAA, uses this figure in its official statistical rankings, and because nothing is capped it can exceed 158.3 comfortably and can also go negative on a genuinely disastrous line.
Worked example, matching the values this page loads with. 25 completions from 35 attempts for 300 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. The completion rate is 0.71429, so a = (0.71429 − 0.3) × 5 = 2.07143. Yards per attempt is 8.57143, so b = (8.57143 − 3) × 0.25 = 1.39286. The touchdown rate is 0.08571, so c = 0.08571 × 20 = 1.71429. The interception rate is 0.02857, so d = 2.375 − (0.02857 × 25) = 1.66071. None is capped. Their sum is 6.83929, divided by 6 is 1.13988, and multiplied by 100 gives an NFL rating of 114.0. The NCAA formula on the same line gives (2,520 + 990 − 200 + 2,500) ÷ 35 = 5,810 ÷ 35 = 166.0.
Why the Two Ratings Disagree
That gap — 114.0 against 166.0 — is not a rounding difference, and the two numbers are not on the same scale at all. Three structural differences drive it.
The caps. The NFL formula truncates every component at 2.375, so exceptional performance in any one category is simply discarded above the ceiling. The NCAA formula has no ceiling, so a spectacular yards-per-attempt figure keeps contributing. This is why college ratings routinely sit in the 150s and 160s for performances an NFL rating would call very good but not remarkable.
The weighting of touchdowns. A touchdown is worth 330 divided by attempts in the NCAA formula, which at 35 attempts is 9.43 rating points each. In the NFL formula a touchdown adds 20 ÷ attempts to component c, then gets divided by six and multiplied by 100, which works out at 9.52 points at the same volume — close, until component c hits its cap at a touchdown rate of 11.875%, after which additional touchdowns are worth exactly nothing.
The treatment of interceptions. The NFL component floors at zero, which it reaches at an interception rate of 9.5%. Beyond that, throwing more interceptions cannot lower the rating any further. The NCAA formula subtracts 200 per interception with no floor at all, so a bad day keeps getting worse.
The practical rule: never compare a college rating with a professional one. They answer the same question with incompatible arithmetic.
What Passer Rating Leaves Out
Both formulas were designed to rank passers using statistics that were reliably recorded at the time, and that constraint still shapes them.
Sacks are invisible. A quarterback taken down eight times for 60 yards has the same rating as one who threw the ball away eight times, because neither event is an attempt. Sacks are among the most damaging outcomes on a passing down, and the metric does not see them.
Rushing does not exist. A quarterback who gains 90 yards and two scores on the ground gets no credit whatsoever. For mobile passers this omits a large share of their actual production.
Context is stripped out. Down, distance, field position, score and time remaining all change what a completion is worth, and none of them enters either formula. A five-yard completion on third and twelve counts identically to one on third and four, though only one moved the chains.
Small samples are unstable. With ten attempts, a single interception moves the NFL rating by roughly 40 points. Rate statistics need volume before they mean anything, and a single-game rating from limited attempts should be read as noise.
Reading a Rating Sensibly
The number has no intuitive scale, which is its most-criticised feature, so two anchors are worth committing to memory.
66.7 is what a passer scores when every component sits exactly at the historical average built into the formula's constants — it is the metric's designed midpoint, not 50 or 100. 158.3 is the ceiling, reached when all four components are capped simultaneously, which requires roughly a 77.5% completion rate, 12.5 yards per attempt, a touchdown on 11.875% of attempts and no interceptions.
Between those, the practical bands most analysts use are rough: under 70 is poor, 70 to 85 is below average, 85 to 95 is adequate, 95 to 110 is good and anything sustained above 110 across a full season is exceptional. Those bands drift over time as the passing game evolves, which is the deeper problem with the metric — the constants were fixed decades ago against a very different distribution of outcomes, so a rating of 90 does not mean today what it meant when the formula was written.
