Salt dough is the cheapest modelling material there is: flour, table salt and water, mixed in a bowl, rolled out, cut and dried in a low oven. It has been a school and kitchen-table craft for generations because it costs almost nothing and needs no special equipment. The awkward part is scaling it. Almost every recipe you find is written for one batch of two cups of flour, and one batch does not make twenty-four ornaments or six handprint plaques. What This Salt Dough Calculator Does
The classic recipe is written in parts by volume: two parts plain flour, one part table salt, one part water. Those parts are convenient at the bowl and useless for scaling, because a cup of flour and a cup of salt weigh very different amounts. Salt is dense and packs closely; flour is light and traps air. A cup of salt weighs well over twice what a cup of flour weighs, which is why the finished dough is far saltier than the two-to-one flour-to-salt ratio makes it sound.
The tool converts the parts you enter into weights using standard cup weights, scales the whole recipe so the total matches the dough you actually need, and then reports each ingredient in both grams and cups. It also reports the salt as a percentage of the finished dough and as grams per piece, and it converts that into the number of pieces that would reach the dose at which veterinary sources report signs of salt toxicosis in an animal of the weight you entered. On the default settings that number is startlingly small.
Finally it gives a starting bake time from thickness. Drying is a diffusion process: water has to travel from the middle of the piece to the surface, so the time grows with depth rather than area.
How to Use It
- Count the pieces. Enter how many you intend to bake and add a few spares. Salt dough is brittle before it is sealed and a proportion of any batch will chip.
- Weigh one piece, or estimate it. Raw dough per piece is the input that matters most. If you have made these before, weigh one before baking and use that figure. Otherwise the presets give a sensible starting point.
- Set the parts. Leave it at 2:1:1 for the classic recipe. Raising the flour parts gives a softer, easier dough that is less brittle; raising the salt parts gives a harder finish and a saltier, more dangerous piece.
- Enter the thickness and the oven temperature. Measure the thickest piece, not the average, because the batch is done when the thickest piece is done.
- Read the salt figures. The grid and the note underneath tell you how much salt is in each piece and how few pieces matter for an animal in the house. Plan storage before you plan decoration.
The Formula: How the Batch Is Scaled
Start with the parts by volume. Using standard cup weights of 120 g for plain flour, 292 g for table salt and 237 g for water, one "unit" of the recipe at parts f, s and w weighs 120f + 292s + 237w grams. At the default 2:1:1 that is 240 + 292 + 237, which is 769 g per unit.
The total dough required is simply the number of pieces multiplied by the weight of one piece. Dividing that total by the weight of one unit gives the scale factor, and multiplying each ingredient's cup count by that factor gives the amounts. Nothing is lost or invented along the way, so the three ingredient weights always add back to the total.
Work the default. Twenty-four pieces at 35 g each is 840 g of dough. Dividing 840 by 769 gives a scale factor of 1.0923. Flour is 2 × 1.0923 × 120 = 262.2 g, salt is 1.0923 × 292 = 319.0 g, and water is 1.0923 × 237 = 258.9 g. Those add to 840.0 g, which is the total we started from. The salt is 319.0 ÷ 840 = 38.0 per cent of the dough by weight, and 319.0 ÷ 24 = 13.3 g of salt in every single ornament.
The bake time uses the widely repeated craft convention of about one hour per 6 mm of thickness at 100 °C, with a floor of one hour, adjusted for oven temperature: a cooler oven needs proportionally longer. It is a starting point for checking, not a timer to walk away from. Salt dough is finished when it is hard all the way through and sounds solid when tapped, and the only way to know that is to check it.
Why the Salt Content Is a Genuine Hazard
This is where the arithmetic stops being a convenience and starts being a safety message. The Merck Veterinary Manual's entry on salt toxicosis in animals reports that clinical signs of toxicosis in dogs can appear after ingestion of roughly 2 to 3 grams of salt per kilogram of body weight. Pet Poison Helpline lists salt as toxic to pets and names handmade salt-dough ornaments and homemade salt play dough specifically among the common ways animals are exposed.
Put those two facts next to the default calculation. A 10 kg dog reaches the lower end of that range at about 20 g of salt, and each 35 g ornament in the default batch holds 13.3 g. Two ornaments are enough. Signs described in veterinary sources run from vomiting and diarrhoea through disorientation and tremor to seizures, and this is a documented veterinary emergency rather than a theoretical one.
The same reasoning applies to small children, who are lighter than most dogs and who put things in their mouths as a matter of course. Raw dough is the greater risk because it is soft and tastes of nothing alarming until it is already swallowed, but a baked ornament is just as salty; drying removes water, which makes the salt a larger fraction of what remains. Colour the dough with food colouring if you like the look, but understand that colouring it makes it more appealing to eat, not less.
Practical handling follows from that. Mix, roll and cool it where an animal cannot reach it, hang finished ornaments high rather than at nose height, and bin offcuts rather than leaving them on the side. If a pet does eat salt dough, contact a vet or an animal poison service straight away.
Why Weight Beats Cups for a Craft Dough Too
Volume measurement is approximate for the same reason it is approximate in baking. A cup of flour can weigh anywhere from roughly 120 g to 145 g depending on whether it was spooned in or scooped and how much it has settled, and salt varies by crystal size: fine table salt packs far more densely into a spoon than coarse or flaked salt does. The cup weights used here are the common convention, and they are approximate by nature. If you scoop your flour rather than spooning it, your dough will be drier than the numbers suggest.
It matters most for the salt figures. Coarse sea salt in the same cup puts less salt in by weight than the calculation assumes, and very fine salt puts in more. Getting a Flat, Hard, Crack-Free Result
Three failures account for almost every ruined batch, and none of them is a mixing problem. The first is puffing: baking too hot drives steam out faster than it can escape through the surface, and the piece bubbles. Dropping the oven to 100 °C or lower and accepting a longer time fixes it. The second is cracking during drying, which comes from uneven thickness — a piece with a thin edge and a fat middle dries at two different rates and tears along the boundary. Rolling between two guide sticks of the same depth solves it more reliably than care does.
The third is a piece that looks finished but goes soft again a week later as moisture redistributes. That is under-drying, and it is why the bake time here scales with thickness; turning pieces over halfway through helps, because it exposes the underside that has been sitting against a tray. Sealing then matters too: salt dough is hygroscopic, so an unsealed ornament in a damp room softens over a season. A few coats of varnish keep it stable, and reduce — but do not remove — the chance of an animal getting a mouthful of salt out of it.
