What This Face Shape Calculator Does
It computes three ratios from your four measurements and scores them against six proportion profiles. The ratios are face length divided by cheekbone width, forehead width divided by cheekbone width, and jaw width divided by cheekbone width. Cheekbone width is used as the reference in each case because it is the most reliably located landmark of the four and because using ratios rather than raw sizes means the result does not change with the overall size of a head.
Each of the six categories is represented by a target value for those three ratios. The tool measures how far your ratios sit from each target, converts those distances into a closeness score, and expresses each score as a share of the total across the six. The category with the largest share is shown at the top, and the bars underneath show the full ranking.
There is no hidden database and no photograph involved. Everything happens in your browser from the four numbers you type in, and nothing is sent anywhere.
How to Use It
- Choose your unit. Millimetres, centimetres or inches. Only the display changes — the categorisation is entirely ratio-based.
- Measure your forehead across its widest point, roughly midway between the eyebrows and the hairline, with the tape flat.
- Measure across the cheekbones at the widest point, from the outer edge of one to the outer edge of the other.
- Measure the jawline across the angles of the jaw, then measure face length from the centre of the hairline vertically down to the base of the chin.
- Read the bars, not just the label. If two categories score within a few points of each other, your proportions genuinely sit between them.
The Formula: How It Is Calculated
Let L be face length, C cheekbone width, F forehead width and J jaw width. The three working ratios are L ÷ C, F ÷ C and J ÷ C. The six category targets used on this page are: oval (1.50, 0.90, 0.80), round (1.15, 0.90, 0.85), square (1.20, 0.97, 0.97), oblong (1.65, 0.95, 0.90), heart (1.45, 0.97, 0.70) and diamond (1.55, 0.82, 0.75). Those targets are this page's stated convention, chosen to express the plain-language descriptions the categories have always carried — a square face is one whose three widths are close to equal, a heart is one whose jaw is much narrower than its forehead, and so on. They are not published by any authority, because no authority publishes them.
For each category the tool computes a weighted squared relative deviation: d = 1.2 × ((L/C − t₁)/t₁)² + ((F/C − t₂)/t₂)² + ((J/C − t₃)/t₃)². Length carries slightly more weight because it separates the elongated categories from the compact ones more decisively than either width ratio does. The raw closeness score is 1 ÷ (0.004 + d), and each category's share is its raw score divided by the sum of all six.
Worked through with the default values — forehead 115, cheekbone 130, jaw 110, length 190 — the ratios are 1.462, 0.885 and 0.846. Oval's deviation comes out at 0.0044, far smaller than any other category's, giving it a raw score of about 119 against a total of roughly 228, or a 52 per cent share. Oblong and diamond follow at around 16 and 14 per cent respectively, which is the tool telling you honestly that this set of proportions is oval-leaning but not emphatically so.
The Categories Are a Convention, Not a Fact
This is the part most face-shape pages leave out. The six-category scheme comes from hairdressing and eyewear retail, where it is a useful shorthand for talking about proportion with a customer. It has no standards body, no agreed measurement protocol and no published definition. Different salons, different opticians and different magazines use overlapping but non-identical versions of it, and some add a seventh or eighth category such as triangle or pear.
Clinical and ergonomic disciplines do measure faces rigorously, but they do not sort them into these six buckets. They record named linear dimensions between defined landmarks. The 2017 PLOS ONE paper Characterization of small-to-medium head-and-face dimensions for developing respirator fit test panels works with nineteen such dimensions, including bizygomatic breadth, bigonial breadth and menton–sellion face length, which are the formal names for three of the four measurements this page asks for. The National Academies report Assessment of the NIOSH Head-and-Face Anthropometric Survey of U.S. Respirator Users reviews the large American survey that underpins much of that measurement work. Neither produces a face-shape label, because a label is not what facial anthropometry is for.
So treat the output here the way you would treat a colour name. It is a description someone found useful, applied consistently, and it will not be true or false about you.
Where the Measurement Goes Wrong
The four measurements are harder to take reliably than they look, and small errors move the answer more than people expect because everything is a ratio. Face length is the worst offender: a receding or uneven hairline makes the top landmark ambiguous, and choosing a point a centimetre higher can shift the length-to-cheekbone ratio by enough to move you from oval to oblong. If your hairline is not a clear line, take the measurement three times on different days and use the middle value.
Jaw width is the second problem. The bigonial landmarks are the angles of the jaw, not the widest visible point of the lower face, and soft tissue can sit noticeably outside the bone. Pressing hard gives one number and resting the tape gives another. Keep the pressure light and consistent across all four measurements.
Hair is the third. Measure to skin at every landmark, not over hair, and pull long hair back before you start. A face shape derived over a fringe is a hairstyle measurement, not a face measurement.
Why Two Categories Often Tie
A near-tie is not a failure of the tool. It is the most common honest result, because real faces do not cluster into six neat groups — the underlying dimensions vary continuously. Oval and oblong differ only in how elongated the face is, and there is no natural boundary between them, just a line somebody drew. The same is true of round and square, which share an elongation range and differ mainly in whether the jaw is narrower than the cheekbones.
If two categories are within about five points of each other on the bars, read both descriptions and take whichever language is more useful to you. If one category is thirty points clear of the rest, your proportions are unusually distinct in that direction. Either way the bars carry more information than the headline, which is why they are on the page.

You will often see face-shape content attached to a claim that some particular ratio marks out an ideal face. There is a long history of that claim and very little evidence behind it. What this page does is much narrower: it reports proportion, and proportion is a description.
