Hat Size Calculator — head circumference to US, UK and EU

Converts a head measurement into US, UK and European hat sizes using the published relation, checked against a named hatter’s own chart.

European sizes are simply the circumference in centimetres, so the metric figure is doing double duty.
Run a soft tape around your head where the hat will actually sit: across the middle of the forehead and just above the ears. Hold it firmly but do not pull it tight, and measure twice — a centimetre is a whole size here.
This adds to your measurement before conversion. It is an allowance you are choosing, not a published adjustment, and it is shown separately below so you can see what it did.
US and UK hat sizes are published in eighths. Rounding up is worth trying if you are between sizes and prefer a hat that is not tight.

This hat size calculator converts a head circumference into the three sizing systems you will meet when buying a hat: the US numeric size in eighths, the UK numeric size, and the European size in centimetres. It does it with an arithmetic relation rather than a lookup table, and the relation has been checked row by row against a named hatter’s published chart. Where it could not be sourced, it is not here.

That check is worth describing, because it is unusual for a sizing page to do it. Arb Digital took the published chart from Lock & Co. Hatters, which lists European sizes 53 to 65 alongside their US and UK equivalents, and ran the formula against every row. It reproduces all thirteen exactly. That is the evidence for the arithmetic, and it means the tool is not asking you to trust a table typed in from somewhere.

What This Calculator Does

It converts your measurement to inches, divides by pi, snaps the result to the nearest eighth, and reports that as the US size. It subtracts an eighth for the UK size. It rounds the centimetre figure to give the European size. And it reports a letter size from the published size bands, so you know whether to reach for a medium or a large when a listing gives nothing else.

It also shows an allowance option, which is the honest way to handle thick hair or a liner underneath. That allowance is yours, not a published adjustment, so the tool applies it, prints what it did, and shows you the size both with and without it.

How to Use It

  1. Measure where the hat sits. Across the middle of the forehead and just above the ears, all the way round.
  2. Do not pull the tape tight. Firm and level is what the published charts assume; a tight tape costs you a size.
  3. Measure twice. A centimetre is roughly a full size in this system, so a sloppy measurement is a wrong hat.
  4. Set an allowance only if you genuinely wear something under the hat or have a lot of hair to accommodate.
  5. Read all three systems, because listings from different countries quote different ones and only the centimetre figure is unambiguous.

The Formula, and the Check Against a Published Chart

The US hat size is head circumference in inches divided by pi, rounded to the nearest eighth. That is not a coincidence or a convention: circumference divided by pi is the diameter, so a US hat size is approximately the diameter of your head in inches. A size 7 hat fits a head seven inches across.

The UK size is exactly one eighth smaller than the US size for the same head. The European size is the head circumference in centimetres, rounded to a whole number, with no conversion at all.

Here is the verification, done row by row against Lock & Co.’s published chart. A 53 cm head is 20.866 inches; divided by pi that is 6.641, which rounds to 6⅝, matching the chart. 55 cm gives 6.893 and rounds to 6⅞. 56 cm gives 7.003 and rounds to 7. 58 cm gives 7.268 and rounds to 7¼. 60 cm gives 7.519 and rounds to 7½. 62 cm gives 7.769 and rounds to 7¾. 64 cm gives 8.020 and rounds to 8. 65 cm gives 8.145 and rounds to 8⅛. Every one of those matches the published US column, and subtracting an eighth from each matches the published UK column. The formula and the chart are the same rule.

The default worked example is 58 cm. That is 22.835 inches, divided by pi gives 7.268, the nearest eighth is 7.25, so the US size is 7¼, the UK size is 7⅛, the European size is 58, and the letter size is large. Every step of that is arithmetic you can repeat on paper.

Why the Inches Column on Some Charts Looks Wrong

If you compare charts you will notice their inch columns disagree slightly, and sometimes disagree with the formula. Lock & Co. lists 53 cm as 20½ inches, when 53 cm is actually 20.87 inches. The Village Hat Shop sizing guide lists slightly different inch ranges again against its own letter sizes.

The reason is that these charts are printed for humans, so the inch figures are rounded to convenient fractions and sometimes given as ranges rather than points. The centimetre column and the numeric size column are the load-bearing ones; the inch column is a courtesy. This tool computes from your measurement rather than from a chart’s inch column, which is why it agrees with the numeric sizes even where the inch columns look off.

Letter Sizes Are the Least Reliable Part

Small, medium and large are convenient and almost meaningless across brands. The published bands used here follow the ranges hatters publish alongside their numeric sizes: roughly 54 to 55 cm for small, 56 to 57 for medium, 58 to 59 for large, 60 to 61 for extra large, and upwards from there. But a letter carries no measurement, so a large from one maker and a large from another can be a full size apart.

This matters most with one-size-fits-most hats, which are cut to a single size with some adaptability and simply will not work at the ends of the range. If a listing offers only a letter and publishes no centimetre figure, you are guessing, and the honest move is to ask the seller for the measurement rather than to trust the letter.

What the Measurement Cannot Tell You

Head shape is the big one. Two people with identical circumference can have quite different head shapes, and hats are blocked to a shape as well as a size. A long oval head in a round-blocked hat presses at the front and back and gapes at the sides, regardless of the number matching. Some makers publish an oval designation alongside the size; most do not, and this is a common reason a correctly sized hat still feels wrong.

Material behaviour is next. Felt gives and can be stretched or shrunk by a hatter. Straw gives very little and can crack if forced. Wool knits stretch a great deal and then relax. Structured caps with a stiff sweatband hold their size; unstructured ones do not. The same number on the label means something different in each material.

And style changes how a hat wants to sit. A fitted baseball cap, a flat cap, a fedora and a beanie are all worn at different depths on the head, and several are sized on entirely separate scales. Fitted caps in particular are commonly sold in their own numeric run, and the same head can take different numbers in caps and in hats. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring too high or too low. The tape goes where the hat sits: mid-forehead and just above the ears. A centimetre out is a size out.
  • Pulling the tape tight. Published charts assume a firm but relaxed measurement, and a tight tape buys you a hat that gives you a headache.
  • Assuming UK and US numbers are the same. They look the same and are not; the UK size is exactly one eighth smaller for the same head.
  • Trusting a letter size alone. Small, medium and large carry no measurement and vary widely. Ask for the centimetre figure.
  • Ignoring head shape. Circumference is one dimension. A long oval head in a round block will not fit even at the right number.
