Frame size is one of the oldest ideas in anthropometry and one of the simplest: measure the wrist, compare it with height, and place the result in one of three categories. Because the wrist has very little muscle and almost no fat over it, its circumference is close to a direct measurement of bone, which makes it a convenient stand-in for skeletal build. This body frame size calculator reproduces the published chart exactly, shows you which row and which threshold your measurement fell against, and stops there.

Arb Digital publishes this as a measurement lookup. That is the whole scope. The page does not tell you what to weigh, does not adjust any target for your frame, does not comment on body composition, and does not draw a health conclusion from a wrist measurement — because none of those things follow from it. What it does do is show its own boundaries, so you can see how close your measurement sat to the next category, which is the part most versions of this tool leave out.

What This Body Frame Size Calculator Does

It takes a height and a wrist circumference, selects the correct row of the published chart for that height, and reports which of the three categories the wrist measurement falls into: small, medium or large. It shows the actual thresholds for that row alongside your figure, converts your measurement between inches and centimetres, and computes the height-to-wrist ratio that appears in the research literature as an alternative expression of the same idea.

The chart comes from the MedlinePlus medical encyclopedia entry Calculating body frame size, published by the US National Library of Medicine, which states that body frame size is determined by a person's wrist circumference in relation to their height.

This is a different measurement from the ones our other body tools handle. The BMI calculator works from weight and height and says nothing about bone. How to Use It

  1. Choose the chart. The published thresholds differ between the women's and men's charts, so this selects which set of numbers applies.
  2. Enter your height. Height only picks the row; it does not enter the calculation any other way.
  3. Measure the wrist properly. Use the smaller wrist, find the narrowest point just beyond the wrist bone towards the hand, and keep the tape snug without pressing into the skin.
  4. Read the thresholds, not just the label. The bars show the boundaries for your row so you can see how close the call was.
  5. Stop there. The classification is the output. Anything further — weight, composition, health — is outside what this measurement can tell anyone.

The Published Chart

For the women's chart the thresholds vary by height row. Under 5 feet 2 inches: small is a wrist under 5.5 inches, medium is 5.5 to 5.75 inches, large is over 5.75 inches. Between 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 5 inches: small is under 6 inches, medium is 6 to 6.25 inches, large is over 6.25 inches. Over 5 feet 5 inches: small is under 6.25 inches, medium is 6.25 to 6.5 inches, large is over 6.5 inches.

For the men's chart the source publishes a single row, for men over 5 feet 5 inches: small is 5.5 to 6.5 inches, medium is 6.5 to 7.5 inches, large is over 7.5 inches. It gives no separate thresholds for shorter men, and this tool does not invent any — it applies the published row and says on the result that it is doing so. That is a real limitation of the source and it should be visible rather than papered over.

Work the default through. A woman 64 inches tall falls in the 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 5 inches row, where the medium band is 6 to 6.25 inches. A wrist of 6.1 inches sits inside that band, so the classification is medium. It is also 0.1 inches from the small boundary and 0.15 inches from the large one — close enough on both sides that a slightly different tape tension would change the answer, which is exactly why the tool shows the numbers.

Why the Wrist and Not Something Else

The wrist is chosen for a practical reason: at its narrowest point it is essentially skin, tendon and bone. There is no meaningful muscle belly and very little subcutaneous fat, so the circumference changes far less with weight, training or age than almost any other measurement on the body. A person can gain or lose a great deal of weight and their wrist circumference will barely move.

That stability is what makes frame size useful as a descriptive category and useless as anything else. A measurement that does not respond to changes in the body cannot tell you about the current state of the body. It describes the frame that the rest of the body is built on, which is why the categories are what they are: three broad descriptive bands, not a score.

Elbow breadth is the other classical measurement used for the same purpose, measured with calipers across the two bony points of the bent elbow. It is less convenient because it needs calipers rather than a tape, and the chart above is wrist-based, so this tool implements the wrist method only rather than mixing two systems with different thresholds.

The Ratio Version, and What It Is Not

Research literature often expresses the same idea as a ratio: height divided by wrist circumference, in matching units, giving a unitless number. Our default example gives 64 ÷ 6.1 = 10.49. A larger ratio means a narrower wrist relative to height, which is the small-frame direction.

One study, Wrist Circumference and Frame Size Percentiles in 6-17-Year-Old Turkish Children and Adolescents in Kayseri, defines frame size as the ratio of height to wrist circumference and classifies it by percentile within its study population: small at or below the 15th percentile, medium between, large at or above the 85th. This tool shows you the ratio but does not apply those percentile cut-offs, because they were derived in a specific population of children and adolescents in one city, and applying them to adults elsewhere would be misusing them. The ratio is shown as a number, not as a classification.

That distinction matters generally. Percentile-based categories are only meaningful within the reference population they were built from, whereas the fixed inch thresholds in the MedlinePlus chart are absolute values. The two systems can and do disagree about the same wrist, and neither is wrong — they are answering slightly different questions.

Measurement Error Is Bigger Than the Bands

The medium band on the women's chart is a quarter of an inch wide. That is genuinely narrow relative to how consistently most people can measure a wrist with a fabric tape. Tape tension, exactly where along the wrist you place it, whether the hand is relaxed or flexed, and whether the tape has stretched with age can each move the reading by a tenth of an inch or more.

The practical consequence is that a result near a boundary should be read as "near the boundary" rather than as a category. Measure three times, on separate occasions if you can, and see whether you get the same figure. If the readings straddle a threshold, the honest answer is that your wrist sits between two bands, not that one of them is correct.

Two other sources of variation are worth knowing. Wrists swell and shrink slightly through the day and with temperature, so morning and evening readings can differ. And the two wrists are rarely identical; the convention is to measure the smaller one, which is usually the non-dominant side. Consistency in method matters more than precision in any single reading.

Where Frame Size Sits Among Body Measurements

Frame size has historically been used to adjust weight tables, which is where most of its cultural weight comes from and also where most of the trouble starts. This page does not do that, and does not link the classification to any weight figure, because the chart above was published as a measurement lookup and carries no weight recommendation with it. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring over the wrist bone — the chart uses the narrowest point just beyond it towards the hand, and going over the bone reads high.
  • Pulling the tape tight — compression can shift the reading by more than the width of the medium band.
  • Treating a borderline result as settled — the bands are a quarter-inch wide, which is inside normal measurement error.
  • Using the men's chart for a shorter man — the source publishes only one row, for heights over 5 feet 5 inches, and shorter heights are simply not covered.
