It reports the gap in whichever direction it falls, and how much vertical jump would be needed to reach each of three milestones: touching the rim, dunking with one hand, and dunking with two.

The clearance a dunk needs above the rim is a convention that varies with hand size and technique, and the calculator says so rather than presenting one number as settled fact.

What This Dunk Calculator Does

It performs one addition and several subtractions, which sounds trivial until you notice how often the arithmetic is done wrong. The single most common error is comparing height to the rim instead of reach to the rim. Height is irrelevant to dunking except through its correlation with reach. Two players of identical height can have standing reaches five or six inches apart, and that difference is worth more than most people's realistic vertical jump gains.

The calculator takes standing reach, adds vertical jump to give maximum touch height, and reports how that sits relative to the rim. It then works backwards from each milestone to say what vertical jump the same reach would need. If you do not know your standing reach it can estimate it from height using a 1.33 ratio, clearly flagged as an approximation.

How to Use It

  1. Pick your units. Inches or centimetres; the tool converts what is already in the fields when you switch.
  2. Enter your standing reach. Stand flat-footed against a wall, stretch one arm straight up, and mark the fingertip. That mark is your reach.
  3. Or estimate it. If you have no way to measure, set the estimate option and the calculator will use 1.33 times your height as a rough stand-in.
  4. Enter your vertical jump. Use the figure from the kind of jump you would actually dunk from — a running one-foot takeoff usually measures higher than a standing two-foot jump.
  5. Set the rim height. Regulation is 10 feet. Adjustable hoops and youth setups are often lower, and that changes every number below.

The Formula

Maximum touch height is standing reach + vertical jump. The gap to the rim is maximum touch height − rim height, positive if you can reach above it. The vertical jump required for any milestone is target height − standing reach, where the target is the rim for a touch, and the rim plus a clearance for a dunk.

The rim itself is fixed by the rules. FIBA's 2024 Official Basketball Rules and Basketball Equipment specifies the ring at 3.05 metres above the playing surface, with an inside diameter between 450 and 459 millimetres. That is 10 feet and roughly 18 inches respectively, and it is the same standard used in the professional and college game.

How Much Clearance a Dunk Actually Needs

Touching the rim requires touch height equal to rim height — that part is exact. Dunking requires enough clearance to get the ball, and part of your hand, over the rim while still controlling the ball. The calculator uses six inches above the rim for a one-handed dunk and nine inches for a two-handed dunk, which are the commonly used working figures.

They are working figures, not standards, and the variation around them is real. A player with large hands who can palm the ball needs materially less clearance than one who cannot, because palming lets the ball be carried above the rim in one hand rather than pushed down with an outstretched arm. A running one-hand attack from an angle also converts horizontal speed into a higher, more forward-reaching touch than a stationary two-foot jump at the same measured vertical. Nine inches is a reasonable planning figure for a two-hander; it is not a threshold anyone crosses at a fixed number.

Why Your Measured Vertical Is Less Certain Than It Looks

Vertical jump numbers are quoted to the inch and treated as facts, but the measurement device changes the answer by more than most people's training gains. A study in Sensors on the concurrent validity and reliability of devices to measure jump height compared several tools against a contact platform and found systematic overestimation across the board: video recording stayed within about two centimetres, but one flight-time system overestimated by around nine centimetres and another device by over eleven centimetres in some jump types. The authors concluded plainly that although each device had been validated on its own, they are not interchangeable.

Eleven centimetres is more than four inches. If your vertical came from a phone app or a wrist device and your calculated touch height lands within a few inches of the rim, the honest answer is that the arithmetic cannot resolve the question. The fix is not a better calculator, it is a better measurement: chalk on the fingertips and a wall, or a jump against a marked backboard, gives a directly comparable number in the same units as your reach.

Reach Matters More Than Height, and More Than Most Training

Consider two players, both six feet tall. One has a standing reach of 7 feet 10 inches, the other 8 feet 2 inches. The second needs four fewer inches of vertical jump to reach every single milestone on this page. Four inches of vertical is a serious training outcome that takes months of consistent work; four inches of arm is free. This is why reach is the input the calculator insists on and height is only ever a fallback.

Lower Rims, Youth Hoops and Comparing Numbers

A large share of dunk claims involve a rim that is not at ten feet. Adjustable driveway hoops commonly sit anywhere from eight to ten feet, and youth competition uses lower rims by age group. Because every figure on this page is a subtraction from rim height, dropping the rim by six inches reduces every requirement by exactly six inches. That is a big change at the margin: a player six inches short of a one-hand dunk at regulation height is at the threshold on a nine-and-a-half-foot rim.

The practical consequence is that no dunk claim means anything without the rim height attached. If you are tracking progress, fix the rim, fix the measurement method, and change only the vertical. Otherwise you are comparing three moving quantities at once and will not be able to say which one moved.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Comparing height to the rim instead of reach. Height only matters through reach, and two players of the same height can differ by half a foot of reach.
  • Using a vertical measured by an app. Published device comparisons show overestimates of several centimetres, which is enough to flip the answer entirely.
  • Mixing a standing vertical with a running attack. They are different jumps and usually different numbers; use the one matching how you would take off.
  • Forgetting to state the rim height. Every requirement on this page is a subtraction from it, so a lowered rim changes all of them by the same amount.
  • Treating the dunk clearance as exact. Six and nine inches are conventions; hand size and ball control move them in both directions.
