Stride length is the distance between two successive contacts of the same foot. Step length is the distance between the contact of one foot and the contact of the other, so a stride is two steps. Getting those two definitions the right way round is where most confusion about gait numbers begins. What This Stride Length Calculator Does

In measured mode you walk or run a known distance, count your steps across it, and the calculator divides one by the other. That gives step length directly, and stride length is twice it. This is a measurement of you rather than an estimate of a population, and it takes about a minute to do.

In height mode it applies a commonly used ratio to your height instead. That is a fallback for when you cannot get out and measure, and it is honestly labelled as such: two people of identical height routinely have noticeably different natural strides, so the ratio is a starting point rather than an answer.

Both modes then take a speed and report the cadence that speed requires at the length you have. Cadence is steps per minute, strides per minute is half of it, and steps per kilometre falls out of the step length directly.

How to Use It

  1. Measure a distance. Thirty metres is enough for walking; sixty is better for running because it dilutes the effect of acceleration.
  2. Start moving before the line. Accelerating inside the measured section shortens your early steps and skews the result.
  3. Count every foot strike. Left and right both count. Counting only left feet gives you strides, not steps, and halving the number by mistake doubles your answer.
  4. Repeat and average. Three runs at the same effort give a far more reliable number than one.
  5. Enter a speed for the cadence figure. Use the speed you actually moved at during the measurement, otherwise the cadence shown belongs to a different gait than the one you measured.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

The measured method is a division:

Step length = measured distance ÷ steps counted, and stride length = 2 × step length.

The definitions behind that come from gait analysis, where stride length is the distance between two successive initial contacts of the same foot and step length is the distance between the initial contact of one foot and the subsequent initial contact of the other. Research on gait measurement, such as the work on step-length estimation published in Bioengineering on step-length estimation from a single lower-back sensor, treats step length as a fundamental spatial parameter of gait for exactly this reason: it is the building block everything else in walking measurement is made from.

Cadence follows from speed and step length:

Cadence in steps per minute = speed in metres per minute ÷ step length in metres

Working the defaults through: 30 metres covered in 40 steps gives a step length of 0.75 m and a stride length of 1.50 m. A speed of 5 km/h is 83.33 metres per minute, so cadence is 83.33 ÷ 0.75 = 111 steps per minute, which is 56 strides per minute. Steps per kilometre is 1000 ÷ 0.75 = 1,333.

Speed Is Length Times Cadence, and Only Those Two

There is no third variable. However fast you are moving, that speed is the product of how long each step is and how many of them you take per minute. Every change in speed is a change in one of those two, or both.

What that means practically is that the two are substitutable, but not freely. At low speeds, people mostly increase speed by lengthening the step. Above a certain speed, lengthening further becomes inefficient — overstriding puts the foot down ahead of the body and creates a braking force at every contact — and further speed has to come from turning the legs over faster instead.

This is why cadence gets so much attention in running coaching and why stride length gets comparatively little. Cadence is the variable most runners can adjust deliberately; stride length is largely a consequence of your limb lengths, your strength and your speed, and trying to lengthen it directly usually produces overstriding rather than speed.

Why Your Stride Is Not One Number

The most common misuse of a stride figure is treating it as a constant. It is not. It changes with almost everything.

Speed. Your stride at a stroll is substantially shorter than your stride at a brisk walk, which is shorter again than your running stride. A single stored value applied to a whole day of mixed movement will be wrong for most of it.

Gradient. Stride shortens going uphill and, for most people, also going downhill as they control the descent. A hilly route will produce a genuinely different average stride from a flat one at the same effort.

Surface and footwear. Sand, snow, trail and treadmill all change gait. So do shoes — a stiff, cushioned shoe and a minimal one produce measurably different contact patterns.

Fatigue. Stride length declines over the course of a long effort while cadence tends to hold up better, which is one of the reasons pace fades late in a race even when perceived effort is rising.

Load, age and injury. Carrying a pack, walking with a group, walking with a pushchair, or protecting an injury all shorten stride, sometimes considerably.

The practical response is to measure the stride for the activity you care about, at the speed you care about, and not to reuse it for a different one.

What Cadence Numbers Do and Do Not Tell You

Cadence figures circulate widely in running, often as a single target number. The evidence is more nuanced than the folklore. Cadence varies with running speed, with height and limb length, and between individuals at the same speed, so a universal target is a poor fit for a measurement that is genuinely person-specific.

What cadence is genuinely useful for is comparison against yourself. If your own cadence at a given pace drops noticeably over a run, that is information. If your cadence at an easy pace is unusually low for you and your stride correspondingly long, that combination is the signature of overstriding and is worth looking at. Neither of those conclusions requires a population target.

Calibrating a Step Counter Properly

The most useful application of a measured stride is calibrating whatever counts your steps. Phones and watches that estimate distance from step counts use a stride value, and if that value is a default derived from your height, the distance it reports will be off by however much your real stride differs from the assumption.

Measure your stride at your normal walking speed, enter it into the device, and the step-to-distance conversion becomes yours rather than a population average. If your device only accepts step length rather than stride, use the step figure from this page — feeding a stride value into a step field is a common error that halves the reported distance.

Do the same measurement at running speed if you use the device for running, and set the running stride separately if it allows it. And re-measure occasionally: stride changes with fitness, weight and footwear over the course of a year.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing step and stride. A stride is two steps. Entering a stride value into a device that wants step length halves the distance it reports.
  • Counting only one foot. That gives you strides, not steps, and doubles the length you calculate.
  • Accelerating inside the measured section. Start moving before the line so the whole measurement is at a steady pace.
  • Using one stride for everything. Walking, running, uphill, downhill, tired and fresh all produce different strides.
  • Trying to lengthen your stride deliberately. Reaching further forward usually means landing ahead of your body, which brakes at every step rather than speeding you up.
