The SAT score calculator above converts raw section scores into scaled 200 to 800 section scores and a 400 to 1600 total. It does this by interpolating between two conversion points that you supply from the scoring key of the practice test you actually sat. It does not carry a built-in conversion table, and that is deliberate: SAT raw-to-scaled conversion is published separately for each test form, so any table hard-coded into a web page would be describing some other test.

Arb Digital built the page this way after looking at how the alternatives behave. It is trivial to publish a plausible-looking curve, and impossible for a reader to check it. Someone deciding whether to sit the test again is not helped by an invented conversion. What this page can do honestly is the arithmetic between two anchors you already have in front of you, plus a clear account of what the number does and does not mean.

What This SAT Score Calculator Does

It performs linear interpolation between two known raw-to-scaled points for each section, rounds the result to the nearest ten because SAT section scores are always multiples of ten, clamps it to the published 200 to 800 range, and adds the two sections together for the total. It flags whether your raw score sat between the two anchors, which makes the estimate reasonable, or outside them, which makes it an extrapolation you should not lean on.

It does not produce a percentile. Percentiles compare you to a reference group of test-takers, and the only authoritative source for yours is your own score report from the College Board. This page will not manufacture one, for the same reason it will not manufacture a conversion table. It also makes no statement about whether any score is competitive, sufficient, or good for any institution — that is a question about admissions, not about arithmetic.

How to Use It

  1. Find your form's scoring key. Official practice tests come with a raw-to-scaled conversion for that specific form. That document is the authority for everything on this page.
  2. Pick two anchors that bracket your raw score. Choose the table row just below your raw score and the one just above it. The closer they sit, the more accurate the interpolation.
  3. Enter your raw counts. Correct answers only. The digital SAT has no penalty for a wrong answer, so blanks and wrong answers count the same.
  4. Repeat for the other section. Reading and Writing and Math are scaled independently, with different tables.
  5. Read the interpolation note. If it says your raw score fell outside the anchors, go back and pick better ones.

The Method and How It's Calculated

Linear interpolation between two points (r₁, s₁) and (r₂, s₂) gives s = s₁ + (r − r₁) × (s₂ − s₁) ÷ (r₂ − r₁). The result is then rounded to the nearest multiple of ten and held inside the 200 to 800 range.

Work the defaults through. In Reading and Writing the raw score is 40, sitting between anchors of 35 raw giving 650 scaled and 45 raw giving 720 scaled. The gap is ten raw points for seventy scaled points, so each raw point is worth seven scaled points across that stretch. Five raw points above the lower anchor gives 650 + 35 = 685, which rounds to 690.

In Math the raw score is 38, between 35 raw giving 680 and 42 raw giving 760. That is seven raw points for eighty scaled points, so roughly 11.4 scaled points per raw point. Three raw points above the lower anchor gives 680 + 34.3 = 714.3, which rounds to 710. The total is 690 + 710 = 1400. Note how differently the two sections behave — a raw point is worth seven scaled points in one and eleven in the other, across these particular stretches of these particular tables. That difference is exactly why a generic conversion is useless. The linear interpolation calculator performs the same arithmetic on any pair of points.

Why SAT Scaling Is Published Per Form

Different administrations of the SAT are not identical in difficulty, however carefully they are assembled. If they were scored on a fixed raw-to-scaled rule, a student who happened to sit a harder form would be penalised for the accident of which Saturday they chose. Equating exists to remove that. Each form gets its own conversion, calibrated so that a given scaled score represents the same level of performance whichever form produced it.

The direct consequence is that the same raw score maps to different scaled scores on different tests. A raw 40 might scale to 690 on one form and 700 or 680 on another. The differences are usually modest, but they are real and they are not predictable in advance — the conversion is determined after the fact from how the form actually performed. That is why the scoring key is bundled with each individual practice test rather than printed once in a book.

It also means a conversion table you found online is only as good as its provenance. If it does not name the specific form it belongs to, it is not usable. If it does name one, it is usable for that form and no other. This page takes the anchors as input precisely so that the authority stays with the document in your hand. What a Section-Level Estimate Cannot Capture

The digital SAT is multistage adaptive. Each section comes in two modules, and your performance on the first module determines which version of the second you receive. That means the scaled score depends not only on how many questions you got right, but on which module you were routed to — two students with identical raw counts can end up with different scaled scores if they took different second modules.

A calculator working from a raw count and a conversion table cannot model that. What it can do is exactly what the practice test's own key does, which is convert within the routing you actually experienced. If your key gives separate tables for different module paths, use the one matching yours. If it gives a single table, that table already reflects the routing assumptions of that form. Either way, the number this page produces is an arithmetic reading of a document, not a prediction of a future test.

Practice-test scores also carry ordinary measurement error. Official score reports show a score range around the reported figure precisely because a retake under identical conditions would not produce an identical number. Treat any single practice result as one observation with noise around it, not as a fixed property of your ability, and look at the trend across several sittings rather than at any one of them.

Why There Is No Percentile Here

A percentile says what proportion of a reference group scored at or below you. It depends entirely on which group — all test-takers in a year, a nationally representative sample, or the cohort who sat one particular administration — and those give visibly different answers for the same score. The College Board publishes the percentiles that appear on score reports, computed against defined reference groups, and that report is the only place your percentile properly comes from.

Reproducing a percentile table from memory or from an unsourced web page would be inventing a statistic, and a statistic about you specifically. So this page does not do it. Reading the Section Scores Sensibly

Section scores run from 200 to 800 in steps of ten, and the total is simply their sum, not a separate rescaling. Nothing is weighted, so a scaled point in Math and a scaled point in Reading and Writing are worth the same to the total. That has a practical implication for how to read the gap figure: the arithmetic route to a higher total runs through whichever section has more raw points still available and the steeper conversion at your current position.

Notice also that conversion tables are not straight lines. They are typically flatter in the middle of the range and steeper at the extremes, so a single raw point is worth much more near the top of the scale than in the middle. Interpolating between two anchors that sit close together captures the local slope well; interpolating across a wide gap smooths out real curvature and will be less accurate. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using a conversion table from a different form — every SAT form has its own, and mixing them produces a scaled score for a test you did not sit.
  • Choosing anchors far apart — conversion tables curve, so a wide bracket smooths away the local slope. Use the rows immediately either side of your raw score.
  • Extrapolating beyond the anchors — if your raw score is outside both anchors, the arithmetic still returns a number, but it is a guess about a region of the table you did not look at.
  • Treating one practice score as fixed — a retake under identical conditions would give a different number. The trend across several sittings is far more informative.
  • Expecting a percentile from a raw score — percentiles depend on a reference distribution that only the test publisher holds, and appear on your official report.
