Arb Digital built the page this way on purpose. Plenty of score calculators online display a raw-to-scale table and present it as authoritative. ACT converts raw scores to the 1 to 36 scale separately for every test form, precisely so that a given scale score means the same thing on an easier form as on a harder one, and it publishes that conversion with each released test rather than as a single universal chart. Any tool that shows you one fixed table is guessing, and the guess can easily be a point or two out in either direction on a section score.
What This ACT Score Calculator Does
It does the arithmetic that surrounds the scale scores, which is the part that is genuinely fixed and knowable. The composite is the average of your section scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number, with fractions below one half rounded down and fractions of one half or more rounded up. That rule, and the structure of the 1 to 36 scale, are set out on ACT's own Understanding Your ACT Scores guide.
The tool then adds three things a plain average does not give you. It shows the unrounded average, so you can see how close you are to tipping over a boundary. It computes the smallest total of section points that would round up to a target composite, and subtracts your current total to show the gap. And it reports the STEM score, the average of the math and science section scores, when you have entered a science result.
What it deliberately does not do is predict a scale score from a number of correct answers using a table of our own invention, and it does not report percentile ranks. Percentiles come from ACT's national norms, which are published for specific graduating cohorts and revised, and quoting one without naming the cohort would be misleading rather than helpful.
How to Use It
- Enter your section scale scores. Take them from your score report, or from the conversion table supplied with the practice test you sat.
- Choose which sections make up the composite. Science became an optional section that does not feed the composite; if your report is older than that change, pick the four-section option.
- Set a target composite and read the points-needed figure, which is expressed in total section points rather than in composite points.
- Use the raw converter if you have a table. Copy the two rows either side of your raw score, enter them as raw / scale, and the tool interpolates between them.
- Check the bars to see which section is furthest from the top of the scale. That is usually where the cheapest composite point is available.
How the Composite Is Calculated
Add the section scale scores, divide by the number of sections in the composite, and round the result. With the default values — English 24, math 22, reading 27 — the total is 73 and the average is 24.3333, which rounds down to a composite of 24. Add a science score of 25 and switch to the four-section option and the total becomes 98, the average becomes exactly 24.5, and the half-up rule rounds that to 25. The same four numbers produce different composites depending on which sections count, which is why the section selector matters.
The target planner inverts that arithmetic. To round to a composite of 27 across three sections, the average must reach at least 26.5, so the total must reach at least 3 × 26.5 = 79.5, which means 80 whole points. Your current total of 73 leaves a gap of 7 points. That is a far more useful number than "three composite points away", because it tells you what has to happen on the actual sections. Seven points might be one strong section improving substantially, or it might be spread across all three.
Why Raw-to-Scale Conversion Is Form-Specific
A raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly. The scale score is the result of putting that raw score through a conversion built for the particular test form you sat, a process known as equating. Its purpose is to make scale scores comparable: if one form happens to contain slightly harder math questions, its conversion is adjusted so that the same underlying ability earns the same scale score.
The practical consequence is that the same raw score can map to different scale scores on different forms, and that the difference is not constant across the range. Conversions are typically compressed near the top of the scale, where one or two additional correct answers can move the scale score by a point, and flatter in the middle, where several extra correct answers may be needed. That is why the interpolation in this tool is labelled approximate: it assumes the conversion is a straight line between the two rows you supplied, and the real table has steps rather than a slope. Between two adjacent rows the error is usually small; across a wide gap it is not.
Rounding: Where the Composite Is Won and Lost
Because the composite is a rounded average, the interesting question is never "how many points do I need" in the abstract but "how far am I from the next rounding boundary". The unrounded average in the results grid answers that directly. An average of 26.49 and an average of 26.51 are almost identical achievements, and they produce composites of 26 and 27 respectively.
Across three sections, each boundary sits at a total of section points ending in a specific pattern. A composite of 27 needs a total of 80 or more; a composite of 28 needs 83 or more. So the gap between consecutive composites is three total points when there are three sections, and four when there are four. If you are one point short of a boundary, a single extra scale point anywhere lifts the composite. If you are two points clear of the last boundary, a single extra point does nothing at all to the composite. Reading Section Scores Rather Than the Composite Alone
The composite compresses four numbers into one and hides the shape of a result. Two students with a composite of 26 can look very different: one might have four scores clustered between 25 and 27, another might have a 33 and a 19. The average is the same, and the two profiles are not.
The bars beside the result show each section as a proportion of the 36-point scale, which makes that shape visible at a glance. If you also took the science section, the STEM score in the grid averages math and science and is reported separately. It has no effect on the composite under the current structure, which is set out on ACT's page describing the recent enhancements to the ACT test, where the optional status of science and writing is stated directly. The writing test is reported on its own 2 to 12 scale and is separate from everything on this page.
Practice Test Scores and What They Can and Cannot Tell You
A composite computed from a released practice test is a real measurement of how you performed on that form under those conditions, and nothing more. Three things routinely make a practice composite look better than a test-day one: untimed or generously timed sections, familiarity with a form that has circulated widely, and marking your own paper. Three things make it look worse: sitting it cold, sitting it tired, and sitting a form from a different era of the test.
The sensible use of a practice composite is as a tracking number over several attempts rather than as a single prediction. Plot three or four of them and the trend is informative even though any one point is noisy.
