The GMAT score calculator above does the arithmetic the GMAT score scales genuinely support, and refuses to do the parts they do not. It works with the three GMAT Focus Edition section scores on their published 60 to 90 scale, adds them, shows where each one sits within the scale, measures the distance to a target you set, validates a Total against the published 205 to 805 scale, and interpolates a percentile between two anchors you take from your own score report.

Arb Digital built this page around a hard limit that most GMAT score calculators quietly ignore. The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test, and the algorithm that converts your responses into a scaled section score is not published. Neither is the table that turns three section scores into a Total. That means no calculator on the open web can tell you what Total your section scores produce, and any page that appears to is showing you a fabricated curve. This one shows the quantities that are actually computable, and states plainly where the official score report is the only authority.

What This GMAT Score Calculator Does

It reports the sum and the average of your three section scores, identifies the lowest one and how many points of headroom it has to the top of the scale, and computes how far your current section total sits from a target you choose. All of that is ordinary arithmetic on published scales, and it is correct regardless of what the underlying algorithm does.

It also validates a Total. GMAC publishes that the Total Score scale runs from 205 to 805, that every reportable value ends in a 5, and that the three sections are weighted equally in producing it. The tool checks your entered Total against those rules and reports its position within the range as a percentage of the scale — which is a statement about the scale, not about other test takers, and should never be read as a percentile.

Finally, it interpolates between two percentile anchors that you supply from your own score report. That is the same approach our percentile calculator takes to ranks generally, and it is the only honest way to produce a percentile here, because the percentile tables are recalculated periodically from a rolling window of test takers and are distributed with the score report itself.

What This Calculator Cannot Do, and Why

It cannot convert a number of correct answers into a section score. On an adaptive test the scaled score depends on which questions you saw and how difficult they were, not merely on how many you got right. Two candidates answering the same number correctly can receive different section scores, because the algorithm accounts for the difficulty of the items each of them was routed to.

It cannot derive your Total from your three section scores. GMAC states that the sections contribute equally, which tells you the section sum is the quantity the Total responds to, but the mapping from that sum to a specific value on the 205 to 805 scale is GMAC's and is not published. Adding the sections and scaling them linearly would produce a number that looks plausible and would frequently be wrong, so this page does not do it.

It cannot tell you a percentile without your own table. Percentile rankings describe your position relative to a defined population of recent test takers, and that population changes. A percentile quoted from memory or from a table of unknown vintage is not information. GMAC's Understanding Your Score page is the reference for what each score means and how the scales are constructed.

How to Use It

  1. Enter your three section scores. Each runs from 60 to 90 on the Focus Edition scale, in whole points.
  2. Set a target section total. The maximum is 270, from three perfect 90s. The tool shows the gap and how it might be distributed.
  3. Enter your Total from the score report. The tool checks it against the published scale rather than deriving it.
  4. Add two percentile anchors. Take one row from your report's percentile table below your Total and one above it, and enter both score and percentile for each.
  5. Treat the interpolated percentile as approximate. The real table is a step function, and a straight line between two anchors is an estimate of the value between them.

The Published Scales, and What They Mean

The GMAT Focus Edition reports three section scores — Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights — each on a scale from 60 to 90. The Total Score runs from 205 to 805 in steps of ten, so every reportable Total ends in a 5. That deliberate quirk exists to make Focus Edition Totals visually distinguishable from scores on the previous 200 to 800 scale, and GMAC's page explaining the GMAT Focus score scale sets out that reasoning.

The two scales are not comparable and should not be converted into one another. A Total from the Focus Edition and a Total from the earlier edition are produced by different exams, from different sections, against different reference populations. A difference of ten points between them is not a difference of ten points in anything real. Where a comparison is genuinely needed, the concordance information GMAC publishes is the only source that carries any weight.

Note also that Data Insights is a section of the Focus Edition Total, whereas the analytical section of the older exam was reported separately and did not enter the Total at all. That structural change is another reason a numeric comparison between editions is meaningless without the official concordance.

Reading the Section Balance

Because the three sections are equally weighted, a point gained in any one of them is worth the same as a point gained in any other. That fact has a practical consequence the bars above make visible: the section with the most distance to the top of the scale is the one where a fixed amount of preparation has the most room to move the total, all else being equal.

That is a statement about arithmetic, not about study strategy. Whether a given section is actually easier to improve depends on you, on where your errors are coming from, and on how much of the remaining gap is knowledge rather than timing. The scale headroom tells you the ceiling, not the difficulty of reaching it, and treating the two as the same thing is how people end up drilling their weakest area past the point of return while a nearly-fixable timing issue in another section goes untouched.

The other thing the balance view shows is that section scores are bounded. A candidate at 88 in one section has two points of headroom there and cannot make up a large deficit from it however hard they work, which is a constraint worth seeing before a plan is built on the wrong section. Percentiles Move, Scores Do Not

A scaled score is a statement about your performance against the exam's measurement model. A percentile is a statement about your position among a group of other people who took the exam over a defined recent window. The first is stable; the second is not, because the group changes.

This is why the same score can carry different percentiles in different years, and why an interpolated percentile from anchors on your own current report is more reliable than any figure remembered from elsewhere. It is also why the percentile on an old report is not the percentile that report's score would carry today. When you enter anchors here, take them from the table printed alongside the score you are asking about.

The interpolation itself is linear between your two anchors, and the tool labels the result as approximate for a reason: the underlying table is a step function with a value at each reportable score, so the true percentile at a point between your anchors is whatever the table says, not what a straight line predicts. Choosing anchors close together on either side of your score makes the approximation better. A Worked Example You Can Check Yourself

The defaults use section scores of 82 in Quantitative Reasoning, 79 in Verbal Reasoning and 76 in Data Insights. The section total is 82 + 79 + 76 = 237 out of a possible 270, and the average is 79.0. The lowest section is Data Insights at 76, which has 14 points of headroom to the top of the 60 to 90 scale.

Against a target section total of 245, the gap is 245 − 237 = 8 points, which could come from any combination of the three sections since they are weighted equally. Every section here has enough headroom to supply all eight on its own, which is the kind of thing worth confirming before choosing where to concentrate.

The Total of 645 is checked against the published scale: it lies between 205 and 805, it ends in a 5, and (645 − 205)/10 = 44 exactly, so it is a reportable value. Its position within the scale is 440/600 = 73.3 percent of the way up. That is a property of the number line, not of any group of test takers, and it is not a percentile — which is precisely why the percentile panel stays empty until you give it anchors from your own report. Notice too that the section scores and the Total in this example are independent entries; the page does not claim one produces the other.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trusting a raw-to-scaled conversion table — the adaptive algorithm is not published, so any such table on the open web has been invented.
  • Comparing a Focus Edition Total with an older one — different exams, different sections and different reference populations mean the numbers are not on a common scale.
  • Using a percentile from an old report or a remembered figure — percentile tables are recalculated from a rolling window of test takers and move over time.
  • Treating scale position as a percentile — being 73 percent of the way up a number line says nothing about how many people scored below you.
  • Assuming the section with the most headroom is the easiest to improve — the scale tells you the ceiling, not the effort needed to approach it.
