This AP score calculator combines your multiple-choice and free-response results into a single weighted composite, expresses it as a percentage of the total available, and converts it to a 1 to 5 estimate using cut points that you supply. It works for any AP subject, because every input that varies by subject — section sizes, section weighting, and the cut points themselves — is a field you control rather than a table baked into the page.

Arb Digital built it this way deliberately. A great many AP score calculators display a fixed conversion grid for each subject and present it as the answer. Those grids are usually reconstructed from a released exam that may be years old, and the College Board does not publish cut points for current exams at all. Presenting a borrowed grid as authoritative is the one thing this page will not do, because the reader cannot tell the difference between a real cut point and an invented one, and the difference decides whether a predicted 3 is really a 3.

What This AP Score Calculator Does

It performs two calculations and reports both. The first is the weighted composite: your multiple-choice proportion and your free-response proportion, each multiplied by its section weight and added together. That figure is a genuine, checkable number that depends only on your own results and the weighting stated in your subject's Course and Exam Description.

The second is the band lookup: comparing that composite against four cut points to produce a 1 to 5 estimate. This part is only as good as the cut points you enter. The tool ships placeholder values so the page is not empty on arrival, and it labels them as placeholders in three separate places, because the honest answer to "what composite gives a 5 in my subject this year" is that nobody outside the College Board knows.

The College Board explains that section totals are combined into a composite which is then converted to the 1 to 5 scale in its guide to how AP Exams are scored. It also states that the process is designed so that a 3 this year reflects the same level of achievement as a 3 last year, which is exactly why the raw composite required moves from year to year.

How to Use It

  1. Enter your multiple-choice result as points earned out of points available. On most AP exams there is no deduction for a wrong answer, so this is just your number correct.
  2. Enter your free-response result by adding the rubric points across every question, marked against the published scoring guidelines rather than by impression.
  3. Set the section weighting to match your subject. Check the Course and Exam Description for your exam; the split is stated explicitly there and it is not the same for every subject.
  4. Replace the four cut points with the ones printed on the scoring worksheet of the practice or released exam you are using.
  5. Read the composite first, the band second. The composite is a measurement. The band is an estimate that inherits all the uncertainty in the cut points.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

The composite percentage is a weighted average of two proportions: composite = w × (MC earned ÷ MC available) + (1 − w) × (FR earned ÷ FR available), where w is the multiple-choice weight expressed as a fraction. It is the same arithmetic our weighted grade calculator performs on coursework categories, applied to two exam sections.

Work the defaults through. The multiple-choice result is 45 out of 60, which is 75 percent. The free-response result is 42 out of 60, which is 70 percent. With an even split, the composite is 0.5 × 75 + 0.5 × 70 = 72.5 percent. Against a cut point of 62 for a 4 and 75 for a 5, that lands in the 4 band, 2.5 composite points below the 5 boundary. Change the weighting to 40 percent multiple choice and the composite becomes 0.4 × 75 + 0.6 × 70 = 72 percent — still a 4, but half a point further from the boundary. The weighting is not a detail.

Notice that the gap-to-next-band figure is quoted in composite percentage points, not in questions. Converting it back into questions depends on the section: with an even split and 60 multiple-choice questions, each correct answer is worth 0.5 × (100 ÷ 60) = 0.833 composite points, so 2.5 points is three more correct answers. Why Cut Points Move and Why That Is a Feature

AP exams are criterion referenced, not graded on a curve. The College Board's page on score setting and scoring describes an evidence-based standard-setting process that gathers data from college faculty, runs comparability studies in which faculty administer AP exams to their own students, and uses that evidence to decide what performance a 3, 4 or 5 represents.

Because the standard is fixed in terms of achievement rather than rank, the raw composite needed to reach it has to move when the exam's difficulty moves. A harder paper means a lower composite earns the same score, and an easier paper means a higher one is required. That is the mechanism that makes a 4 comparable across years, and it is also precisely why a cut point copied from a 2012 released exam is not a safe guide to this year's paper. The direction of the error is unpredictable, which is worse than a known bias.

What This Estimate Cannot Tell You

Three limits are worth being explicit about. First, the tool cannot know your subject's real cut points, so the band it reports is conditional on the numbers you typed. Change the cut for a 5 from 75 to 71 and the same composite becomes a 5 — the arithmetic did not improve, the assumption did.

Second, self-marked free-response points are the least reliable input on the page. Rubrics award points for specific stated content, and marking your own work generously by even one point per question can move a composite by several points. If you can, have someone else mark against the scoring guidelines, or mark strictly and treat the result as a floor.

Third, this page offers no guidance on what any score means for university credit, placement, or applications. Credit policies are set by individual institutions and vary widely, and a calculator is in no position to advise on them. It reports a number; what to do with it is not its business. Where Your Revision Time Actually Pays

The results grid splits the composite into the part contributed by each section, and the split is often surprising. With the defaults, multiple choice contributes 37.5 composite points and free response contributes 35. That is not because one section was better; it is because each is worth half of the total and both scored similarly.

The useful question is marginal rather than total: how much does one additional point in each section move the composite? That figure is the section weight divided by the section's points available, and it is shown in the working panel. When the two sections have equal weight but very different point totals, one point in the smaller section is worth several points in the larger one. A section with 60 rubric points at 50 percent weight gives 0.833 composite points per rubric point; a section with 100 questions at the same weight gives 0.5 per question. Knowing that ratio tells you where an hour of revision has more leverage, and it is a more honest guide than a general feeling about which section is weaker.

Using the Tool Across Several Practice Exams

A single practice composite is a noisy measurement. The same student sitting two practice papers a week apart can produce composites several points apart, driven by question selection, tiredness and how strictly the free response was marked. Treating one result as a prediction overreads it in both directions.

The better use is a series. Record the composite from each practice exam, keep the weighting and marking standard consistent across them, and look at the trend rather than the last point. Averaging three recent composites is more stable than any one of them, and the spread between them is itself informative: a wide spread means the estimate is uncertain, and a tight cluster means it is not.   • Trusting the placeholder cut points — they are there so the page loads with a worked example, not because they apply to your exam.
  • Assuming an even section split — the weighting varies by subject and is stated in the Course and Exam Description for your exam.
  • Marking your own free response generously — rubric points are awarded for specific content, and one soft point per question compounds quickly.
  • Averaging the two section percentages directly — that is only correct when the weights are equal, and it silently ignores the weighting the moment they are not.
  • Reading a band boundary as precise — a composite one point either side of a cut point is the same performance, and the estimate should be read with that width in mind.
