A reading goal calculator turns an annual intention into a daily quantity, which is the only form in which an annual intention ever gets met. How to Use It
- Set the period. A calendar year is the usual case, but the arithmetic works for any window — a summer, a term, a month.

- Use your own reading speed. Measure it rather than assuming it; the published averages are lower than most people expect.
- Set the days per week you actually read. Planning against seven days and reading on four is the most common reason a goal quietly fails.
- Read the ahead-or-behind figure. It is the early warning, and it is far more actionable in month three than in month eleven.
The Formula and How It Is Calculated
Everything is converted to pages first, because pages are the unit that divides cleanly. A books goal becomes pages by multiplying by the average pages per book. Remaining pages are the target minus what is done. Days remaining are the deadline minus today, and reading days remaining are that figure multiplied by your reading days per week divided by seven.
Worked example. A goal of 24 books at 300 pages each is 7,200 pages across a calendar year. Suppose 12 books — 3,600 pages — are done by day 233 of the year, leaving 3,600 pages and 131 days. That is 27.5 pages per reading day at seven days a week, which at 275 words per page and a reading speed of 250 words per minute is 30.2 minutes a day.
The pace check compares two fractions. The elapsed share of the period is 233 ÷ 364, or 64.0%, so a perfectly even pace would have completed 64.0% of 24 books, which is 15.4 books. Twelve books is 3.4 books behind that line. Notice what the arithmetic has done: the required pace has risen from 19.7 pages a day at the start of the year to 27.5, an increase of 39%, on the basis of a shortfall that looks small when stated as three books.
Why the Required Pace Accelerates
This is the single most useful thing the tool shows, and it is a property of the arithmetic rather than of reading. The required rate is remaining work divided by remaining time, and both terms move in the wrong direction when you fall behind: the numerator stays high while the denominator shrinks. The result is a curve that is nearly flat early in the period and very steep at the end.
The practical consequence is that a shortfall in February is cheap to fix and a shortfall in October is not. Falling two books behind in the first month raises the required daily pace by a few per cent. Falling two books behind in the last month can double it. The other half of the same insight is that the ahead-or-behind figure is a leading indicator and the completed percentage is a lagging one. Watching the percentage tells you where you have been. Watching the gap between the two bars tells you where the pace is heading.
Getting the Page and Speed Inputs Right
Two inputs on this page are routinely guessed badly, and both distort the minutes figure directly. The first is words per page, which is not a constant: a mass-market paperback with small type and tight leading can carry 350 words on a page, while a large-print or heavily illustrated edition may carry 200. The second is reading speed, and this is where most estimates go wrong. A meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert in the Journal of Memory and Language, covering 190 studies and 18,573 participants on how many words we read per minute, put the average adult silent reading rate at 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, with normal ranges of roughly 175 to 300 and 200 to 320 respectively. Those figures are considerably lower than the numbers repeated in popular writing, and using an inflated speed makes a goal look comfortably achievable when it is not.

How Much Reading Time People Actually Have
The minutes-per-day figure is the one that decides whether a goal is realistic, and it is worth comparing against how much reading time exists in a typical day. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics measures this directly in the American Time Use Survey, which records time spent reading for personal interest as a distinct activity and consistently finds it strongly patterned by age — averages in the region of ten minutes a day for younger adults against roughly three quarters of an hour for people aged 75 and over.
Against that background, a goal requiring thirty minutes a day is asking for a substantial change in how a day is arranged rather than a marginal one. That is not an argument against setting it; it is an argument for checking the figure in January. A target that needs fifteen minutes is a habit adjustment. A target that needs ninety is a different life.
The realistic route to a large number is usually format rather than willpower.
