A reading speed test measures one thing: how many words of ordinary prose you take in per minute at a pace where you are still understanding what you read. That last clause is the whole difficulty. Words per minute is trivial arithmetic, but a speed figure detached from comprehension describes page-turning rather than reading, which is why this page asks you to judge how much you actually absorbed and reports both numbers.

It exists mainly because so many other tools ask for a reading speed as an input and most people supply a figure they have never measured — usually one considerably higher than any published average, because the popular literature on the subject is full of numbers that research does not support.
What This Reading Speed Test Does
Press start, read the passage in the panel at your normal pace, and press stop when you reach the last word. The tool counts the words in that passage directly from the page rather than trusting a stored number, divides by the elapsed time, and reports your speed in words per minute. You can also enter a word count and a time from any other source and use the page purely as a converter.
Alongside the raw speed you get an effective speed, which is the raw figure discounted by your own judgement of how much you took in, and a band showing where the result sits against published adult ranges. The last grid figure translates your speed into something concrete: the hours a 300-page book would take at that rate.
The boundary with the sibling tools here is worth being precise about. The reading time calculator goes the other way — it takes a word count and an assumed speed and estimates how long a text will take. How to Use It
- Read at your normal pace. Deliberately racing produces a number that describes nothing you will ever do again.
- Press stop on the last word, not after thinking about it. A second of hesitation is more than one per cent of a typical result.
- Judge your comprehension honestly. The effective figure is the useful one, and it is only as good as that judgement.
- Run it more than once. Single measurements scatter; three attempts on different passages give a far more stable figure.
- Take the result to the tools that need it. A measured speed makes every reading-time estimate you make afterwards more accurate.
The Formula and How It Is Calculated
Speed is words divided by time in minutes. Worked example: the default figures of 300 words in 75 seconds are 300 ÷ 1.25 = 240 words per minute. Selecting the "most of it" comprehension option applies a 90% factor, giving an effective speed of 216 words per minute.
The book estimate scales from there. A 300-page book at roughly 275 words per page is about 82,500 words, which at 240 words per minute is 344 minutes, or five hours and forty-four minutes. That figure surprises people more than the speed does, and it is the one that makes a reading goal feel concrete. The word count of the passage is computed from the text on the page at the moment you run the test, by splitting on whitespace and discarding anything with no letters or digits in it. This matters: a hard-coded count would drift out of step with the passage if either were ever edited, and a wrong denominator produces a proportionally wrong speed.
What a Normal Reading Speed Actually Is
The best available answer comes from a meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert in the Journal of Memory and Language, which pooled 190 studies covering 18,573 participants on how many words we read per minute. It put the average adult silent reading rate at 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, with normal ranges of roughly 175 to 300 and 200 to 320 respectively. Reading aloud is much slower, at about 183 words per minute across 77 studies.
Two things about those figures deserve attention. The first is that they are lower than the numbers commonly repeated in popular writing about reading, and the paper says so explicitly. The second is the fiction–non-fiction gap, which is not about interest or difficulty: it is largely explained by word length, since non-fiction uses longer words and each word takes fractionally longer to process.
That is why this page asks what kind of material you were reading. Comparing a non-fiction result against a fiction average, or the reverse, introduces a systematic error of around twenty words per minute before any individual variation is considered.
Why Speed Reading Claims Do Not Survive Measurement
Claims of a thousand words per minute or more appear regularly, and the reason they fail is mechanical rather than motivational. Reading requires the eyes to move in a sequence of fixations, and each fixation takes time regardless of how motivated the reader is.
A study in PLOS ONE on the perceptual and cognitive factors imposing speed limits on reading rate separated those constraints experimentally by presenting words one at a time in the same spot, removing the need for eye movements entirely. Decoding alone could run at around 1,200 words per minute; adding visual masking dropped it to about 600; memory constraints brought it to 250 to 500; and once normal eye movements were required, the ceiling fell to roughly 300 words per minute. The authors identify eye movement execution as the most restrictive bottleneck in realistic reading.
What this means in practice is that large speed gains come from skipping text, not from processing it faster. Skimming is a genuine and useful skill, and there is nothing wrong with it — but it is a different activity from reading, and a technique that raises your number by dropping your comprehension has not made you faster at the thing you were trying to do.
Why Your Result Varies So Much Between Attempts
Run this test three times on three passages and the results will spread, often by thirty or forty words per minute. That is not a fault in the measurement; it reflects genuine variation in what reading speed depends on.
Text difficulty is the largest factor. Familiar vocabulary in short sentences reads far faster than dense technical prose with long noun phrases, and the same reader can differ by a factor of two across the two. Readability measures capture part of this, which is what the Flesch reading ease calculator and the readability checker quantify — and a passage's score is a reasonable predictor of how fast a given person will get through it.
Purpose matters nearly as much. Reading to locate a fact, reading to follow an argument and reading to remember detail are three different tasks that happen to use the same eyes, and they run at very different rates. A single number cannot describe all three, which is why the effective-speed figure on this page exists: it forces the comprehension level into the result rather than leaving it implied.
Using a Measured Speed Properly
Once you have a figure, the useful thing is to stop guessing everywhere else. Reading-time estimates on articles, planning how long a report will take before a meeting, deciding whether a book fits into a holiday — all of them become arithmetic rather than optimism.
Use your effective speed rather than your raw speed for anything you actually need to understand, and your raw speed only for material you intend to skim.
