How to Use It
- Enter the runtime exactly as listed. Stores quote 1× runtime, so a listing that says 11 hrs and 30 mins goes in as 11 and 30 regardless of how you plan to listen.
- Choose your real speed. Use the presets, or set the selector to custom and type any multiplier — apps commonly allow anything from 0.5× to 3.5× in fine increments.
- Set an honest daily figure. Count the minutes you actually listen on an average day across a whole week, weekends included, not the minutes on your best day.
- Add your progress if you are mid-book. The percentage field removes what you have already heard from every calculation.
- Read the finish date, not just the total. Total listening time flatters you. The finish date is the figure that tells you whether you will get through it before the book club meets.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
Playback speed is a plain divisor. Listening time = runtime ÷ speed, applied to whatever portion of the book remains. Time saved is runtime − listening time on the remaining portion, and the days to finish are listening minutes ÷ minutes per day, rounded up because a partial day still needs a day. The finish date counts the start date as day one. Word count is runtime in minutes × narration rate, using the 1× runtime, because a narrator's word count does not change when you speed the file up.
Worked example, using the values the page loads with. A runtime of 11 hours 30 minutes is 690 minutes. At 1.5× that is 690 ÷ 1.5 = 460 minutes, or 7 hours 40 minutes, saving 230 minutes — 3 hours 50 minutes. At 45 minutes a day, 460 ÷ 45 = 10.2, so it takes 11 days and finishes on the eleventh day counting from the start date. At 150 words per minute the book contains roughly 103,500 words, which is a fairly typical length for an adult novel.
The multiplier is a real property of the media element rather than an approximation: the HTML specification defines a playbackRate attribute on audio and video elements, described in the WHATWG HTML Standard's section on media elements, and every app's speed control ultimately sets that value. A rate of 1.5 means 1.5 seconds of recorded audio play in every second of wall-clock time, exactly.
Why Doubling the Speed Does Not Halve the Effort
The savings from speeding up are hyperbolic, not linear, and this catches people out constantly. Moving from 1× to 1.25× removes 20% of the runtime. Another quarter-step to 1.5× removes only a further 13%. Going all the way from 2× to 3× — a huge jump in how hard the audio is to follow — removes just 17% of the original runtime, less than that first modest step from 1× to 1.25×.
On the 690-minute example, 1× is 11 h 30 m, 1.5× is 7 h 40 m, 2× is 5 h 45 m and 3× is 3 h 50 m. The first half-step saved 3 h 50 m. Doubling the speed again, from 1.5× to 3×, saved another 3 h 50 m — but at a listening rate most people cannot sustain for a whole book. There is a practical sweet spot for nearly everyone somewhere between 1.25× and 2×, past which the extra minutes saved stop being worth the concentration.
This is why the bars on this page show listening time and saved time as shares of the original runtime rather than as a speed number. It makes the diminishing return visible: drag the speed up and watch how little the second bar grows past 2×.
Narration Rate, Word Count and Why Some Books Feel Faster
Audiobook narration sits in a much narrower band than the runtime differences suggest — most professional narration falls somewhere around 150 words per minute, slower than ordinary conversation and considerably slower than a podcast host. That is deliberate: narration has to survive being listened to while the listener is doing something else.
It also means runtime is a good proxy for length. A 690-minute book is roughly 103,500 words whoever narrated it, so you can compare an audiobook's length against a print edition directly. Where books do differ is in what a minute contains. Dense non-fiction at 1.5× is not the same experience as a thriller at 1.5×, and multi-cast productions with sound design lose more than a straight single-narrator reading when sped up. Building a Finish Date You Will Actually Hit
The daily-minutes field is where estimates go wrong, and always in the same direction. People enter the length of their commute and forget that they do not commute at weekends, that some journeys are conversations, and that a fortnight of the year is holiday. A 45-minute daily figure derived from a 45-minute commute is really more like 32 minutes averaged over a week.
The fix is to count backwards from a real week. Add up every minute you listened in the last seven days and divide by seven. If that number is uncomfortable, it is still the number that produces a finish date you will hit. Then use the progress field weekly to re-project; a book that keeps slipping its finish date is telling you the daily figure is fiction rather than that the book is long.
