What This Margin of Safety Calculator Does
Enter current sales volume, the selling price and variable cost of a unit, and total fixed costs for the period. The calculator derives contribution margin per unit and the contribution margin ratio, finds the break-even volume and break-even revenue, and then reports the margin of safety three ways: in units, in currency, and as a percentage of current sales.
The percentage is the headline because it is the only version that can be compared between businesses, between periods and between product lines. A safety cushion of 400,000 in currency means nothing until you know whether current sales are 600,000 or six million.
The four bars set the same period out as proportions of revenue, so you can see where the money goes and how much of it is already committed to covering fixed costs. How to Use It
- Split costs into fixed and variable before you start. This is the entire difficulty of the calculation. A cost that scales with volume is variable; a cost that arrives whether you sell anything or not is fixed. Getting one cost on the wrong side moves the break-even point noticeably.
- Use one consistent period. Annual fixed costs against a month of sales volume produces a break-even point roughly twelve times too high.
- Use average price and average variable cost if you sell a mix of products, and be aware that the answer is only as stable as the mix. A shift towards low-margin lines raises the break-even point without any cost changing.
- Read the percentage, not the currency figure. The percentage is comparable; the absolute cushion is not.

The Formula / How It's Calculated
Four steps, each of which follows from the last. Contribution margin per unit is price − variable cost. The contribution margin ratio is that figure divided by price. Break-even units are fixed costs ÷ contribution margin per unit, and break-even revenue is break-even units multiplied by price. Margin of safety is then (current sales − break-even sales) ÷ current sales, which gives the same percentage whether you compute it in units or in currency.
Run the defaults. A unit sells for 80 and costs 48 in variable terms, so contribution margin per unit is 32 and the contribution margin ratio is 32 ÷ 80 = 40 percent. Fixed costs of 320,000 divided by 32 gives a break-even volume of 10,000 units, which at 80 each is 800,000 of break-even revenue.
Current sales are 15,000 units, or 1,200,000 of revenue. The margin of safety is therefore 5,000 units, 400,000 of revenue, and 5,000 ÷ 15,000 = 33.33 percent. Operating profit confirms it: 15,000 units × 32 contribution = 480,000, less 320,000 of fixed costs, leaves 160,000.
That last figure exposes the property worth remembering. Operating profit always equals the margin of safety in currency multiplied by the contribution margin ratio: 400,000 × 40 percent = 160,000. Every currency unit sold beyond break-even converts to profit at the contribution margin ratio and nothing else, which is why the ratio matters more than the gross margin most reports lead with.
Why the Cushion and Operating Leverage Are the Same Fact
Degree of operating leverage is contribution margin divided by operating profit — here, 480,000 ÷ 160,000 = 3.0. Margin of safety is 33.33 percent. Those two numbers are reciprocals, and they will always be, because both are ratios built from the same three inputs.
The practical reading is direct. Leverage of 3.0 means a one percent fall in sales produces a three percent fall in operating profit, and a 33.33 percent fall in sales wipes the profit out entirely — which is precisely what a 33.33 percent margin of safety says. One number is framed as risk and the other as sensitivity, but they describe an identical cost structure.
This is why comparing margin of safety across businesses without looking at the cost structure misleads. A consultancy with almost no fixed costs can run at a low reported cushion and still be hard to push into loss, because its variable costs fall with revenue. A hotel or a factory with the same reported cushion is far more fragile, because most of its cost base continues regardless. What a Low Margin of Safety Actually Tells You
A thin cushion is not automatically a problem, and a wide one is not automatically safety. Both need context that the number itself does not carry.
A young business scaling into fixed costs it has deliberately taken on will show a thin cushion by design. So will a business in a seasonal trough, measured on a single quarter. Neither is evidence of distress. What matters is the direction of travel across several periods and whether the fixed-cost base was a choice or an accident.
Equally, a wide cushion computed on a single dominant customer is not a cushion at all. If sixty percent of revenue comes from one contract, the relevant question is not whether sales could fall by forty percent but whether that one contract could end. Margin of safety assumes revenue declines smoothly and proportionally, which concentrated revenue does not do. The formula treats the business as if it sells one product at one contribution margin. Almost nobody does. When a business sells several lines with different margins, the break-even point depends on the mix, and the mix is not a constant.
Consider a business selling two lines at the same price, one contributing 40 percent and one contributing 20 percent, currently split evenly. The blended contribution ratio is 30 percent. If demand shifts so that the low-margin line becomes two-thirds of volume, the blended ratio falls to about 26.7 percent, the break-even point rises by more than ten percent, and the margin of safety shrinks — without a single price or cost changing anywhere in the business.
The defence is to recalculate whenever the mix moves materially rather than only when costs move, and to run the calculation separately for each major line as well as for the blend.
