To earn a target profit of 20,000 the business needs (54,000 + 20,000) ÷ 18 = 4,111.1 units, which rounds up to 4,112 because part-units do not sell. The margin of safety at the current volume is (4,000 − 3,000) ÷ 4,000 = 25 percent: sales could fall by a quarter before the business stops covering its fixed base.

The Cost That Looks Variable and Is Not

Every error in a contribution margin calculation comes from the same place: putting a cost in the wrong bucket. The test is simple to state and surprisingly hard to apply. If you sold exactly one more unit tomorrow, which costs would rise? Only those are variable.

Direct materials rise. Payment processing fees rise, because they are a percentage of the transaction. Outbound shipping rises. Sales commission rises if it is genuinely per-sale. Those belong in variable cost without argument.
