Tip: run the calculation once per crop rather than lumping the garden together. Pounds of courgette and pounds of garlic are not interchangeable in a kitchen, and a total in pounds hides that completely.

The garden harvest yield calculator above does two related jobs. Given a number of plants and a yield figure per plant, it estimates what the planting will actually deliver once ordinary losses are taken out. Run the other way, given a household target, it tells you how many plants that target would take. Both are the arithmetic behind the question every gardener asks in February and answers wrongly in August: how much is enough?

Arb Digital publishes this as a free planning tool. It deliberately does not ship a built-in table of yields by crop. Per-plant yields vary enormously with variety, season length, soil, water and management, and a hard-coded number would give a false impression of precision. Instead the yield figure is an input, and the page points you at your local extension service for it — the people who publish figures for your climate rather than someone else's.

What This Garden Harvest Yield Calculator Does

The core calculation multiplies plants by yield per plant, subtracts a loss allowance, and reports the result in pounds and kilograms. Alongside it, the tool divides a household target by the net yield per plant to give the number of plants that target implies, rounded up, because you cannot plant nine tenths of a tomato. It also reports the surplus or shortfall against the target and the bed area the planting occupies at your chosen spacing.

The loss allowance is the part gardeners tend to omit and the part that most often explains a disappointing season. Fruit splits after rain. Slugs and squirrels take a share. Some of the crop ripens while you are away, or all at once in a week when nobody has time to process it. A planting sized from gross yield alone consistently under-delivers, and the honest fix is to plan with the loss in.

How to Use It

  1. Work one crop at a time. A single figure covering the whole garden is not useful, because the crops are not substitutes for one another.
  2. Get a per-plant yield from a local source. University of Maryland Extension's guide to growing tomatoes in a home garden gives 10 to 15 pounds or more per plant, and 15 to 45 pounds per 10-foot row — note how wide even a sourced range is.
  3. Set a loss allowance you can defend. First-season gardeners should be generous with it; someone with three years of records should use their own.
  4. Set the household target from what your household actually eats and preserves, not from a published average.
  5. Compare the plants-needed figure against your available space before you order seed, using the bed area the tool reports.

The Formula and How It's Calculated

Gross harvest is simply plants × yield per plant. Net harvest is gross × (1 − loss fraction). The household target is people × pounds wanted per person, and the plants required to meet it are target ÷ (yield per plant × (1 − loss fraction)), rounded up to the next whole plant.

Work the defaults. Twelve plants at 12 pounds each gives 144 pounds gross. A 15% loss allowance leaves 122.4 pounds net, which is 55.5 kilograms. A four-person household wanting 25 pounds each has a target of 100 pounds. Net yield per plant is 12 × 0.85 = 10.2 pounds, so the target needs 100 ÷ 10.2 = 9.8 plants, rounded up to 10. The twelve plants planned therefore leave a surplus of 22.4 pounds, and at four square feet per plant they occupy 48 square feet of bed.

The sensitivity is worth noticing. Push the loss allowance from 15% to 30% and the same twelve plants deliver 100.8 pounds — barely over the target that ten plants met a moment ago. The loss figure is doing more work in this calculation than most gardeners assume, which is a good argument for tracking it.

Why Published Yield Figures Vary So Widely

Look at any extension yield table and you will find ranges rather than numbers, often with the top of the range double the bottom. Variety is the largest cause. Among tomatoes alone, an indeterminate variety keeps setting fruit until frost while a determinate one sets a concentrated crop and stops, and the seasonal totals differ substantially. Season length is next: a gardener with five frost-free months harvests from an indeterminate plant for far longer than one with three.

Then come the management factors — soil fertility, consistent water, staking and pruning, disease pressure — each of which can move a yield by a third in either direction. The published ranges are honest reporting of that variability, not vagueness. The practical response is to plan with the lower end of the range and treat the upper end as an upside, and to replace the published figure with your own the moment you have a season's records.

Total Pounds Is the Wrong Target

A garden sized purely on weight tends to produce a lot of one or two heavy crops and not much else. Squash, courgette and pumpkin are extremely heavy per plant; lettuce, herbs and radish are extremely light. Planning to a pound total quietly biases the garden toward the heavy crops, and a household ends up with a hundred pounds of squash and no salad.

The more useful frame is servings across the season, or meals a crop contributes to, or jars filled if you preserve. Even that is incomplete without timing: a crop that all arrives in one fortnight is worth much less than the same weight spread over two months, unless you have the time and equipment to process it. Successional sowing exists to solve exactly this, and it is why experienced gardeners often plant fewer of each crop but plant them three times.

Space, Spacing and What Actually Limits the Plan

For most home gardeners the binding constraint is not seed cost or ambition but bed area, and the bed area figure this tool reports is the reality check. Spacing recommendations exist for a reason: plants set closer than recommended compete for light, water and nutrients, and the per-plant yield falls. Halving the spacing does not halve the yield per plant, but it does reduce it, so cramming in more plants delivers less extra harvest than the arithmetic suggests and increases disease pressure through poorer airflow.

Turning One Season's Records Into a Better Plan

Every input on this page except the plant count is an estimate on the first run and a measurement by the third. That is the most valuable thing a garden notebook does. Weigh what comes out of each bed, note roughly how much was lost and to what, and note when the crop arrived rather than only how much. By the end of a season you have a per-plant yield for your own soil and your own variety, a loss allowance grounded in what actually happened, and a sense of whether the harvest window suited your kitchen.

Those three figures make the next year's plan far more useful than any published table could. They also make the failures legible: a low per-plant yield points at fertility, water or variety choice, while a normal yield with a high loss figure points at pests, timing or the fact that nobody was home in the week everything ripened. Those are different problems with different fixes, and a single disappointing total in your memory cannot distinguish between them.

Keep the records simple enough that you will actually keep them. A kitchen scale, a notebook by the back door and one line per picking is enough. Precision to the ounce is not the point; a consistent record across a whole season is.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Planning from gross yield. Losses to pests, weather and missed picking are real and routinely take a tenth to a third of a crop.
  • Using a yield figure from a different climate. Season length changes totals dramatically, so take figures from your own region's extension service.
  • Adding all crops into one pound total, which hides the fact that pounds of squash and pounds of lettuce are not interchangeable.
  • Ignoring harvest timing. A crop that arrives all at once is worth less than the same weight spread across two months.
  • Planting closer than the recommended spacing to fit more in, which lowers per-plant yield and raises disease pressure.
