A tape measure is a mixed-base instrument. Feet are base twelve, the inch is divided in halves and halves again, and nothing about that survives contact with a pocket calculator. What This Feet and Inches Calculator Does
It parses both inputs into an exact number of inches, applies the operation, and formats the result back into feet, inches and a reduced fraction. The parser accepts prime and double-prime marks, the words foot, feet and inch, mixed fractions such as 7 3/8, bare fractions such as 5/8, and decimals such as 3.5'. It also accepts metric — millimetres, centimetres and metres — so you can add 1250 mm to a dimension in feet without converting anything by hand.
Multiplication and division behave differently depending on what the second value is. Multiply a measurement by a plain number and you get a longer measurement. Multiply it by another measurement and you get an area, reported in square feet, square inches and square metres. Divide by a plain number and you get equal parts. Divide by another measurement and you get a dimensionless ratio, which is the number of times one length goes into another — the calculation behind "how many boards fit across this floor".
How to Use It
- Type the first measurement in any reasonable notation. 12' 7 3/8", 12 ft 7 3/8 in and 151.375 all parse to the same value.
- Pick the operation. Add and subtract expect two measurements. Multiply and divide accept either a measurement or a number.
- Say what the second value is. The measurement or plain number selector decides whether multiplying gives you a length or an area.
- Choose your rounding. Sixteenths for joinery, eighths for framing, whole inches for a rough take-off, or no rounding at all when the result feeds another calculation.
- Read the equivalents. Decimal feet for a spreadsheet, total inches for a cut list, millimetres for a supplier who works in metric.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
Everything is converted to inches first: total inches = feet × 12 + whole inches + numerator ÷ denominator. Metric inputs use inches = millimetres ÷ 25.4, the exact definition of the international inch. Arithmetic happens on those decimal inch values, and only the final answer is converted back.
Take the default. 12' 7 3/8" is 12 × 12 + 7 + 0.375 = 151.375 inches. 8' 9 5/8" is 8 × 12 + 9 + 0.625 = 105.625 inches. Added, that is exactly 257 inches, which is 21 feet 5 inches — the eighths cancelled, which they will not usually do. In other units it is 21.4167 decimal feet, 6.5278 metres and 6,527.8 millimetres.
Formatting back is where care is needed. The tool rounds the total to the chosen fraction first, then splits it, which prevents the classic display bug where 11.97 inches rounds to 12 inches and gets printed as "0 ft 12 in" instead of "1 ft 0 in". The fraction is then reduced by its greatest common divisor, so eight sixteenths is shown as one half rather than 8/16. Divide 21' 5" by three and you get 85.667 inches, which at sixteenths is 7' 1 11/16" — the residue of 0.667 inches being eleven sixteenths rather than ten.
Why Decimal Feet and Feet-Inches Are Not Interchangeable
The most expensive mistake in this whole subject is treating the number after the decimal point as inches. 12.7 feet is not twelve feet seven inches; it is twelve feet and 0.7 of a foot, which is 8.4 inches. The error is 1.4 inches, small enough to look plausible on a drawing and large enough to lose a joint. It compounds every time you add another dimension.
Decimal feet are genuinely useful — surveyors, civil drawings and spreadsheets all use them, because they add and multiply without special handling. The rule is simply never to mix the two notations in the same column of figures. Convert everything to one convention at the start, do the arithmetic, and convert back at the end. Reading a Tape: Sixteenths, Eighths and the Marks Between
A standard imperial tape divides the inch into sixteenths, with the marks graded by length: the longest mark is the half, then quarters, then eighths, then the shortest marks are sixteenths. Reading a dimension is really counting the small marks past the last numbered inch. Some tapes go to thirty-seconds over the first few inches, and engineer's tapes drop fractions entirely for tenths and hundredths of a foot, which is a different instrument that happens to look the same.
Two habits prevent most site errors. First, always say the denominator out loud when you record a dimension — "seven and three eighths", not "seven and three". Second, standardise the precision for a job and stick to it. Mixing sixteenths on some cuts and eighths on others across the same assembly accumulates a discrepancy that shows up at the last piece, which is the one that will not fit. Dividing an Opening Into Equal Parts
Dividing is the operation most people reach for and the one most often set up wrongly. Splitting an opening into equal spaces is not the same as splitting it into equal parts, because the things you are spacing have width. Five shelves in a cabinet create six gaps, not five, and the shelf thicknesses have to come out of the opening before the gaps are divided. The general form is: subtract the total thickness of the items from the clear opening, then divide the remainder by the number of gaps, which is usually the item count plus one.

Working Between Imperial and Metric on the Same Job
Mixed-unit jobs are increasingly normal — an imperial building taking metric-manufactured components, or a drawing dimensioned in millimetres being built with an imperial tape. The inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres, so conversion is exact rather than approximate, and the conventions for writing and converting quantities are set out in the NIST guide to the use of the SI, with the wider framework maintained by the NIST Office of Weights and Measures.
The practical trap is rounding, not conversion. One millimetre is about a twenty-fifth of an inch, which is finer than the sixteenths on a tape, so every metric dimension rounded to the nearest sixteenth picks up as much as 0.8 mm of error. Across a run of twenty repeated components that is over a centimetre. When a job mixes systems, do the arithmetic in the finer system, round once at the end, and set out cumulative dimensions from a single datum rather than measuring each piece from the last one.
