The decking calculator above turns two deck dimensions into the four numbers a lumber yard actually needs from you: how many deck boards, how many joists, how many fasteners, and what the pile will cost. It accounts for the gap between boards, the on-centre joist spacing you plan to frame at, and a waste factor — then rounds the board count up to whole stock lengths, because nobody sells 28.6 boards.

Arb Digital publishes this tool as part of a free construction estimating set, and it exists because the naive version of this sum is wrong in a specific way. Divide deck area by board area and you will under-order every time, since that method quietly ignores the gap between every single board. On a wide deck that omission is worth close to a full extra row of boards.

What This Decking Calculator Does

It sizes the boards and the frame together. On the surface side it works out how many rows of boards fit across the deck once the drainage gap is included, converts that into total linear board length, applies your waste percentage, then divides by your stock length and rounds up to whole boards. On the structural side it counts joists at your chosen on-centre spacing and multiplies board rows by joist crossings to get a realistic screw count.

This is deliberately different from our flooring calculator, which handles interior sheet and plank coverage with no gaps, no joists and no framing — the boundary is simple: interior floors sit on a subfloor and butt tight, decks sit on a frame and are spaced apart on purpose. How to Use It

  1. Pick your units. Imperial reads deck size in feet and board sizing in inches; metric reads metres and millimetres. Everything downstream converts automatically.
  2. Enter deck length and width. Length is the direction the boards run. Width is the direction the joists span. Getting these the wrong way round changes both the board count and the joist count.
  3. Set board face width and gap. Face width is the real measured width, not the nominal name — a "6 inch" board is 5.5 in (140 mm). A 1/4 in (6 mm) gap is a common starting point for kiln-dried timber.
  4. Choose stock length and joist spacing. Stock length is the length of board you can actually buy locally. Joist spacing is the on-centre distance your frame will use.
  5. Set a waste factor and prices. Ten percent suits a plain rectangle; raise it for angled boards, wraparound stairs or a picture-frame border.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

Four small formulas run in sequence. First, the coverage width of one board is its face width plus one gap: a 5.5 in board with a 1/4 in gap occupies 5.75 in of deck. Second, the number of board rows is the deck width divided by that coverage width, rounded up — rows = ceil(deck width ÷ (board width + gap)). Third, total linear board length is rows multiplied by deck length. Fourth, boards to buy is ceil(linear length × (1 + waste) ÷ stock length).

Joists are counted the same way any framing member at a fixed on-centre spacing is counted: joists = floor(deck length ÷ spacing) + 1, with the "+1" being the closing joist at the far end that people forget. Fasteners are then board rows × joists × screws per crossing, which is the number of physical intersections where a board sits on a joist. Span limits for the joists and beams themselves are governed by prescriptive tables, not by this arithmetic — the American Wood Council publishes the residential deck construction guide those tables come from, and the underlying requirements sit in the International Residential Code as adopted by your jurisdiction.

Why the Gap Between Boards Changes the Count

The gap is not a detail. It is drainage, it is ventilation, and it is the difference between an order that works and one that comes up a row short. Take a 12 ft (3.66 m) wide deck. Ignore the gap and 144 inches divided by a 5.5 in board suggests 26.2 rows, which people round down to 26. Include a quarter-inch gap and each board occupies 5.75 in, so 144 ÷ 5.75 is 25.04, which rounds up to 26 rows as well. That looks like a wash, until you change one variable. At a 3/8 in gap the same deck needs 25 rows, and at 1/8 in it needs 26. The gap moves the answer across a narrow band of realistic values, and the last row is almost always the one that has to be ripped down its length on site.

Two further points matter here. Wet pressure-treated timber shrinks as it dries, so boards installed tight will open up on their own; boards installed with a wide gap when already dry will stay wide. Composite boards behave differently again — they expand slightly in heat, and most manufacturers specify a minimum end gap that varies with the installation temperature. Always check the specific board's installation sheet before committing to a gap, because it changes both your row count and your warranty.

Joist Spacing Is a Decision, Not a Default

Sixteen inches on centre (400 mm) is the common residential spacing, but it is not the right answer for every board. Composite and PVC decking is less stiff than solid timber and frequently requires 16 in on centre for perpendicular installation and 12 in on centre where boards run diagonally at 45 degrees. Diagonal decking increases the unsupported span between joists by roughly 41 percent for the same nominal spacing, which is exactly why the tighter spacing gets specified.

Dropping from 16 in to 12 in raises the joist count by about a third and raises the fastener count with it, so the calculator recalculates both when you change the selector. If your deck is one part perpendicular and one part diagonal, run the calculation twice — once per zone — and add the results. The Waste Factor Nobody Sets High Enough

A plain rectangle with boards running the full length wastes very little — ten percent is generous. The moment the deck stops being a plain rectangle, that number stops being enough. A picture-frame border requires mitred corners and short offcuts that cannot be reused. Boards laid at 45 degrees produce two triangular offcuts on every single row, and while some of those can be paired up across the deck, many cannot. Around a stair opening or a hot tub cut-out, every board that crosses the opening becomes two pieces with a joint that has to land on a joist.

Practical guidance from installers: keep 10 percent for a simple rectangle, use around 15 percent where there is a border or a herringbone pattern, and use 20 percent or more for diagonal boards on an irregular footprint. It is also worth checking whether your stock length divides cleanly into your deck length. A 16 ft deck built from 16 ft boards has essentially zero butt-joint waste. The same deck built from 12 ft boards needs a second piece on every row, and each of those pieces has to be cut to land centred on a joist — that is where an apparently modest waste percentage disappears fast.

Fasteners, Hidden Clips and What Actually Gets Ordered

The screw count this tool returns is the number of board-to-joist connections multiplied by your fasteners per crossing. Two screws per crossing is standard for face-screwed timber decking. If you are using a hidden fastener system, the arithmetic changes shape: most clip systems use one clip per board per joist rather than two screws, plus a starter clip at each end of every row and a fixed number of screws that comes packed with the system. Feed a value of 1 into the screws-per-crossing field and read the result as clips instead.

Buy fasteners by the box and expect to round up hard. A deck needing 676 screws is a 700-count box with a handful spare, not a 500-count box plus a second trip. Corrosion class matters more than quantity: preservative-treated timber requires hot-dip galvanised or stainless fasteners, because the copper-based preservatives used in modern treated lumber are notably more corrosive to plain steel. Check the treated-timber tag for the fastener class it demands.

Costing the Deck Beyond Boards and Joists

The cost figure here covers boards and joists only, because those are the two line items that scale directly with the dimensions you entered. A real deck budget also has to carry beams, posts, footings, joist hangers, ledger flashing, railing, stairs and finish. On a typical residential deck the surface boards are often less than half the total material spend once the substructure and railing are counted.

Reading the Raw Number Against the Purchasable Number

The tool deliberately shows both. The raw linear length is the honest measurement of how much decking sits on the frame. The rounded board count is what you can actually put in a trolley. The gap between them is your genuine offcut pile, and it is worth looking at before you buy, because sometimes changing the stock length closes it. If 16 ft boards leave you with 1.4 boards of waste and 12 ft boards leave you with 0.3, the shorter stock is cheaper even at a worse price per foot — provided the butt joints land on joists.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using nominal board sizes instead of actual ones — a "2x6" is 1.5 in by 5.5 in, and using 6 in in the calculation under-orders the deck.
  • Forgetting the gap — spacing is part of the coverage width of every board, not a rounding error at the end.
  • Dropping the closing joist — a run of joists at a fixed spacing always needs one more member than the division suggests.
  • Ignoring butt-joint placement — every joint between two boards must land on a joist, which sometimes means blocking or doubled joists that were not in the original count.
  • Buying plain steel fasteners for treated timber — modern preservatives corrode uncoated steel, and the board count is worthless if the fixings fail.
