A combined events score is not a ranking, a percentage or an average. It is the sum of ten, seven or five separate conversions, each of which turns a mark in one event into a number of points using a published formula with coefficients specific to that event. The whole system exists to answer a question that has no natural answer — how many metres of shot put is worth a tenth of a second over 100 metres — and the only reason a decathlon total means anything is that everybody agrees to use the same table.

That last point is the one this page is built around. Scoring tables get revised, and the same marks scored against different editions give different totals. What This Athletics Points Calculator Does

It scores three combined events: the men's decathlon, the women's heptathlon and the women's indoor pentathlon. For each event within a discipline it applies the published conversion formula, floors the result to a whole number of points as the rules require, and adds them up. Alongside the total it reports the average points per event and identifies the strongest and weakest performances, with a bar for each event so you can see where the score is concentrated.

The coefficients used are those of the combined events tables maintained by World Athletics and listed among the technical documents on the World Athletics technical information page. Those coefficients have been stable across the modern combined events tables, which is why decathlon totals from the mid-1980s onward are broadly comparable with today's.

How to Use It

  1. Choose the discipline. Decathlon, heptathlon or indoor pentathlon. Each loads its own event list and a worked example you can edit mark by mark.
  2. Enter running times in seconds. Including the distance events: a 1500 metre time of 4:30.00 is entered as 270, and an 800 metre time of 2:15.00 is 135.
  3. Enter jumps and throws in metres. High jump and pole vault to two decimals, horizontal jumps and throws as measured. The calculator handles the conversion to the centimetres the formula expects.
  4. Leave any event blank or at zero if the athlete did not record a mark. A no-height or a no-mark scores zero points, which is exactly what the total will show.
  5. Read the bars, not just the total. Two athletes on the same score can have completely different profiles, and the bar chart makes that visible immediately.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

Every event uses one of two forms, depending on whether a lower mark or a higher mark is better. For track events, where a faster time scores more:

Points = INT[ A × (B − T)C ]

For field events, where a longer or higher mark scores more:

Points = INT[ A × (M − B)C ]

T is the time in seconds, M is the mark, and A, B and C are the three published coefficients for that specific event. INT means the result is truncated to a whole number, not rounded — 728.9 points scores 728. If the bracketed term is zero or negative, meaning the mark is at or beyond the formula's cut-off, the event scores zero.

A worked example makes it concrete. The men's decathlon shot put uses A = 51.39, B = 1.5 and C = 1.05. A throw of 14.00 metres gives 51.39 × (14.00 − 1.5)1.05 = 51.39 × 12.51.05 = 51.39 × 14.180 = 728.5, truncated to 728 points. Which Edition of the Tables This Uses, and Why It Matters

World Athletics publishes two different things that both get called "scoring tables", and confusing them is the single biggest source of wrong answers online.

The first is the combined events scoring tables, which is what this calculator implements. These are the tables that produce decathlon, heptathlon and pentathlon totals, and their coefficients are the ones set out above. The second is the World Athletics Scoring Tables of Athletics, a much broader document last revised in 2025 that assigns points to marks across every event so that performances in different disciplines can be compared for ranking purposes. Those are a different set of numbers entirely, and running a 10.90 through them will not give you 883 points.

The combined events coefficients have been revised over the history of the sport — the tables in use before the mid-1980s produced materially different totals, which is why very old decathlon scores cannot be compared directly with modern ones without rescoring. Later revisions to the broader scoring tables do not change combined events totals, but any future revision to the combined events tables themselves would. Why the Points Curve Is Not a Straight Line

The exponent C in the formula is greater than one for every event, which means the curve is convex: each additional metre or each tenth of a second is worth more points than the one before it. In the decathlon shot put, moving from 12 m to 13 m is worth about 60 points, while moving from 18 m to 19 m is worth about 65. Over a wider range the effect is much more pronounced in the running events, where the exponent sits near 1.81 to 1.92 and the points accelerate sharply as times approach the formula's asymptote.

This has a real strategic consequence that coaches think about constantly. Because the curve is steeper at the top, an athlete who is already at 900 points in an event gains more per unit of improvement there than an athlete at 700 points does in theirs — but the 700-point event is usually far easier to improve in absolute terms. The arithmetic does not settle the question; it just makes the trade-off visible. Comparing the per-event bars on this page across two of your own competitions is a more useful exercise than staring at the total.

Zero-Point Marks and the Cut-Off Problem

Each event's B coefficient defines a cut-off. For the men's 100 metres, B is 18, meaning a time of 18.00 seconds or slower scores zero points. For the shot put, B is 1.5 metres. These cut-offs are far outside the range of any competitive athlete, but they matter for schools competitions, masters athletics and any context where the tables are borrowed for a much wider ability range than they were designed for. Below the cut-off the formula would return a negative or imaginary value, so the convention is simply zero.

A more common source of a zero is a no-height in the high jump or pole vault, or three fouls in a throw. Those score nothing at all, and because the totals are additive with no floor, a single zero in a strong event can cost more than a bad day in three weak ones. This is the structural reason combined events athletes open conservatively in the vertical jumps: the downside of a no-height is not proportional, it is total.

Hand Timing, Wind and Altitude

The tables score a time, not a race, and they take no position on how the time was produced. Hand-timed results in the sprints and hurdles are conventionally converted to fully automatic timing before scoring by adding a fixed correction, because a hand-started watch systematically reads fast. Scoring a raw hand time as if it were electronic inflates the total, sometimes by dozens of points across a decathlon.

Wind assistance is handled differently again. Combined events are the one place in athletics where wind-aided marks are generally allowed to stand for the purpose of the total, subject to a limit on the average wind across the wind-affected events. Altitude is not corrected at all. None of this is in the arithmetic, and none of it is in this calculator — the competition rules govern which mark is eligible to be scored, and only then does the formula apply.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing up the two scoring tables. The combined events tables and the broader Scoring Tables of Athletics are different documents with different coefficients and give different points for the same mark.
  • Entering distance times as minutes and seconds. The formula takes seconds. A 1500 metre time of 4:30.00 is 270, not 4.30.
  • Rounding instead of truncating. The rules truncate each event's points to a whole number. Rounding up can add several points across a decathlon and produce a total that does not match the official one.
  • Scoring raw hand times. Hand-timed sprints must be converted to fully automatic equivalents first, or the total will be inflated.
  • Comparing scores across eras without rescoring. Combined events totals from before the mid-1980s were calculated on earlier tables and are not directly comparable with modern scores.
