A drop on each roller of a 114-link chain is a surprisingly small volume. If you have never measured it, apply as you normally would over a weighed or graduated container once and use the real figure rather than a guess.

A bottle that seems expensive at the till can be the cheapest option per thousand kilometres if it lasts longer between applications, and a cheap one applied every hundred kilometres in the wet can quietly cost several times as much. How to Use It

  1. Measure your dose once rather than guessing. Apply as you normally would and note how much of the bottle went. Most people use less than they think on a drip lube and far more on an immersion or spray product.
  2. Use the interval you actually ride, not the one on the bottle. Manufacturer intervals are written for favourable conditions. Your winter interval and your summer interval may differ by a factor of three.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

The chain of arithmetic is short. Applications per bottle is bottle volume divided by dose. Cost per application is bottle price divided by that. Applications per thousand kilometres is 1,000 divided by the re-lube interval. Multiply the last two together for the lubricant cost per thousand.

The cleaning side works the same way. Cost per clean is degreaser price multiplied by the fraction of the bottle a clean uses. Cleans per thousand kilometres is applications per thousand divided by how many applications you go between deep cleans. Multiply and add.

Worked through with the values loaded on this page: a 120 ml bottle at 18.00 with a 1.2 ml dose gives 100 applications at 0.18 each. A 250 km interval means 4 applications per thousand kilometres, so 0.72 of lubricant. Degreaser at 12.00 for 500 ml with 20 ml per clean costs 0.48 per clean, and cleaning every fourth application means 1 clean per thousand kilometres, so 0.48. The total is 1.20 per thousand kilometres, which over 6,000 km a year is 7.20, and works out at 0.0012 per kilometre. Bottle consumption is 24 applications a year against 100 per bottle, so 0.24 of a bottle.

Why the Consumable Cost Is Not the Real Cost

The number this page returns is small, and that is the point. Lubricant is almost never a meaningful expense in itself. What makes lubrication choice financially interesting is what it does to the parts. A chain that is kept clean and lubricated wears its rollers and pins slowly; one run dry or run dirty wears fast, and a worn chain then wears the cassette and chainrings, which cost an order of magnitude more than the lube ever did.

Sheldon Brown's article on chain and sprocket wear sets out the published measurement: lay a ruler along the chain with an inch mark at one link pin and look at the pin twelve complete links away. Less than 1/16 in past the mark is serviceable; at 1/16 in past, the chain should be replaced and the sprockets are probably still good; at 1/8 in past, the sprockets are significantly worn and both need replacing. Park Tool's published guide to bicycle lubricants describes wet lubricants as high-viscosity products that perform well in humid or rainy conditions, and dry lubricants as attracting less dirt and debris, which helps in dry, dusty climates. It also notes wax-based products as a third category.

Those descriptions matter for this calculation because each category sits at a different point on the price-versus-interval trade. A wet lube typically goes further between applications in bad weather but attracts more grit, which means more degreaser and more frequent deep cleans. A dry lube usually needs reapplying more often but keeps the chain cleaner, cutting the cleaning consumable. An immersion wax has a high cost per application and a large up-front dose but often a long interval and effectively no degreaser use in normal running.

Because these differences all land in the interval and the cleaning frequency rather than in the shelf price, the only honest way to compare them is to run this page three times with the three sets of numbers from your own riding. That is a more useful exercise than any review.

Where the Estimate Goes Wrong

The main weakness is that the re-lube interval is not a constant. It depends on rainfall, on whether you ride on gritted winter roads, on how much of your riding is off-road, and on the standard you hold yourself to. A rider who re-lubricates when the chain squeaks and one who re-lubricates on a fixed schedule will get very different answers from identical equipment.

The dose is also easy to over-report or under-report. Drip lubricants applied roller by roller and wiped down use much less than people assume; spray products use much more, and a large fraction of a spray never reaches the chain at all. Measuring once is worth more than any amount of estimating.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Comparing bottle prices instead of cost per thousand. A bottle that costs twice as much and lasts three times as long is cheaper. Only the per-distance figure answers the question.
  • Guessing the dose. Measure it once. Estimated doses are commonly wrong by a factor of two or more, and dose is a direct multiplier on the answer.
  • Using the manufacturer's interval as your interval. Published intervals assume favourable conditions. Winter road riding and dusty trails both shorten them substantially.
