What This Animal Mortality Rate Calculator Does
Enter the number of animals or birds present at the start of the period, the deaths recorded during it, any culls removed, and the number of days the period covers. The tool computes the cumulative mortality rate against the starting count, the complementary survival rate, the head remaining, an average daily mortality percentage, and a combined depletion percentage that includes culls.
It also compares your result against a reference figure you type in yourself. That field is deliberately empty of any default meaning: enter your own three-year average, your contract standard, or a published figure from a source you trust. The bar shows how the current batch sits relative to it. What the tool will never do is tell you that a number is good or bad, because that judgement depends on facts a calculator cannot see.
Deaths and culls are kept in separate boxes because most reporting frameworks separate them. A cull is a management decision; a death is not. Reporting them as one figure hides the distinction that usually matters most when a batch is reviewed afterwards.
How to Use It
- Enter the starting head count. Use the number actually placed or present at day zero, which is often lower than the number ordered.
- Enter deaths and culls separately. If your records do not distinguish them, put everything in the deaths field and note that you have done so.
- Set the period length in days. A full broiler cycle, a rearing period, or a calendar month all work — the daily figure is only meaningful once the period is right.
- Add your own reference figure if you have one, taken from your own history or your sector's published standard.
- Read the cumulative and daily figures together. A modest cumulative rate can still contain a very bad week, and only splitting the period into shorter runs will show it.
The Formula and How It's Calculated
Cumulative mortality is the simplest of the four:
Mortality rate (%) = (deaths ÷ head placed) × 100
Survival rate is its complement, 100 minus the mortality rate. Total depletion adds culls to the numerator: (deaths + culls) ÷ head placed × 100. Average daily mortality divides the cumulative rate by the number of days in the period.
Work the default example. A flock of 25,000 birds records 620 deaths and 180 culls over 42 days. Cumulative mortality is 620 ÷ 25,000 = 0.0248, or 2.48 per cent. Survival is 97.52 per cent. Head remaining is 25,000 − 620 − 180 = 24,200. Average daily mortality is 2.48 ÷ 42 = 0.059 per cent per day. Total depletion including culls is 800 ÷ 25,000 = 3.20 per cent.
Cumulative Versus Daily Rates
These two figures are calculated on different denominators, and confusing them is the most common error in batch records. A cumulative rate always divides by the number placed, so it keeps growing across the period and can be compared across batches of different sizes. A true daily rate divides that day's deaths by the number alive that morning, which shrinks a little each day.
The average daily figure this page reports is the cumulative rate spread evenly over the period, which is a simplification and is labelled as one. It is useful for a rough comparison between periods of different lengths and useless for spotting a spike. If you need the real daily series, record deaths against the live count each day and calculate them one day at a time; a spreadsheet column is the right tool, not a single-figure calculator.
Why the Denominator Choice Matters
Two farms reporting "3 per cent mortality" may be reporting entirely different things. One may be dividing by birds placed, another by birds alive at the start of the reporting month, another by birds delivered to the processor. Over a long cycle those denominators diverge substantially, and a figure quoted without its denominator cannot be compared with anything.
The same problem applies to what counts as a death. Some systems record first-week losses separately because they reflect chick or calf quality at arrival rather than on-farm management; some exclude culls; some include animals that died in transport. National statistics bodies define these boundaries explicitly — the United States Department of Agriculture publishes the Cattle Death Loss report through its National Agricultural Statistics Service, setting out how losses are counted by cause. If you are going to compare your batch with anything, first check that the published figure is counting the same events you are.
Timing introduces a third ambiguity. A period defined as "the cycle" may or may not include the day of placement, the day of depopulation, or animals that died in the vehicle before unloading. Over a six-week cycle those edges are worth very little; over a one-week rearing window they can move the figure by a noticeable margin. Write the start and end conventions down once, alongside the numbers, and every later comparison becomes possible rather than approximate.
Splitting the Period Is Where the Information Is
A single cumulative figure for a whole cycle is a summary, and summaries hide shape. First-week losses, a mid-cycle disease event and end-of-cycle losses have completely different causes, and a 2.5 per cent cycle figure could be almost entirely one of them. Running the calculator separately for week one, weeks two to four, and the remainder takes a couple of minutes and turns one number into a pattern.
The same logic applies across houses, pens or paddocks on one holding. Aggregating them produces a farm figure that is genuinely useful for a business account and genuinely misleading for a management decision, because it averages a problem in one building across all of them. Record at the smallest unit you can, and aggregate upward only when you need to.
