Every newsroom in the world has a house style for making a number feel real. Areas become the size of Wales. Volumes become Olympic swimming pools. Lengths become football pitches, double-decker buses or, if the writer is feeling whimsical, bananas. This weird units converter does that conversion properly, and — more usefully — tells you which of these comparison units actually have a defined value and which are folklore with a number attached.
The distinction matters more than it looks. Arb Digital built this page because informal comparisons are genuinely good at conveying scale to a reader who has no feel for hectares, and genuinely bad at surviving contact with a fact-checker. A football pitch has a defined size only if you say which code, and even then only the American one is fixed; an association football pitch legally varies by a third in each direction. If you are going to use these units in public, it is worth knowing which ones will hold up.
What This Converter Does
You enter an amount in a formal unit — metres, acres, tonnes, litres and their common relatives — and it expresses that same quantity in a set of informal comparison units for the same physical dimension. Every comparison is labelled either defined, meaning it follows from an exact standard or a published rule, or approximate, meaning somebody picked a plausible number and the world copied it.
The results are ranked by readability, because that is the actual editorial problem. A comparison that produces 0.00004 of something or 6.2 million of something is useless in a sentence, and the tool pushes the ones that land in a human-sized band to the top. Formal unit-to-unit work is not this page’s job: the length converter, area converter, volume converter and weight converter handle metres, acres, litres and kilograms between themselves. This one owns the novelty and comparison units those tools deliberately leave out.
How to Use It
- Pick the dimension first — length, area, mass or volume — because it reloads both lists and stops you converting a distance into bathtubs.
- Enter the quantity in a formal unit you actually have, rather than converting it by hand first and introducing a rounding error before the tool has even started.
- Choose the headline comparison you want as the big number, then read the ranked list underneath for alternatives that may read better.
- Check the exact-or-approximate label before the number goes anywhere public. This is the whole point of the page.
- Round hard. If the underlying comparison unit is approximate, quoting three decimal places is a false claim about precision, not a courtesy to the reader.
Which Comparison Units Are Actually Defined
A handful of these units are exact, because they descend from a defined quantity. The international yard has been exactly 0.9144 metres since 1959, so an American football field measured end zone to end zone is 120 yards, or precisely 109.728 metres, and its playing area including end zones is 109.728 × 48.768 = 5,351.215 square metres. An Olympic-size swimming pool is 50 metres long by international competition rules, and a hectare is exactly 10,000 square metres. The smoot, the famous MIT bridge unit, is defined as 67 inches, which is exactly 1.7018 metres.
The unit definitions those figures rest on are the ones published in the BIPM SI Brochure, the international reference for the SI, with the conversion factors between SI and customary units set out in NIST Special Publication 811. If a comparison unit traces back to one of those, it is arithmetic. If it does not, it is a convention.
Most of the popular ones do not. There is no standard banana, no defining body for the mass of an elephant, and no agreed capacity for a bathtub. Published figures for an African bush elephant range from about four to seven tonnes depending on sex and age, and the difference between the low and high figure is larger than most of the quantities people are trying to describe. A double-decker bus varies by model and by decade. Even “the size of Wales”, a British institution, is only as good as the land-area figure you use for Wales.
The Football Pitch Problem
The single most abused comparison unit in journalism is the football pitch, and it is abused because it means two entirely different things. An American football field is a fixed 120 by 53⅓ yards. An association football pitch is not fixed at all: the Laws of the Game permit a length between 90 and 120 metres and a width between 45 and 90 metres, with a narrower range for international matches. That means two writers can both honestly describe the same area as “four football pitches” and “nine football pitches” without either of them making an arithmetic error.
The tool therefore uses the American field, which is defined, and says so on the label. If you need the association-football version, decide on a figure, state it in the copy, and accept that a reader with a different figure in mind will get a different picture. The alternative is the hectare, which nobody can visualise but everybody can check.
Worked Example, So You Can Check the Arithmetic
Take the default: 1,000 metres. Divided by the football field’s 109.728 metres that is 9.11 fields. Divided by an Olympic pool’s 50 metres it is exactly 20 pool lengths. Divided by the smoot’s 1.7018 metres it is 587.61 smoots. At an assumed 11.23 metres per double-decker bus it is 89.05 buses, and at an assumed 0.18 metres per banana it is 5,556 bananas. The first three of those are exact conversions of an exact input. The last two are exact conversions of a number somebody guessed, which is a different thing wearing the same clothes.
Notice how the readability differs. Nine football fields is a sentence. Five and a half thousand bananas is a joke. Twenty pool lengths is the one a reader will actually retain, which is why the ranking exists.
When a Comparison Unit Helps and When It Misleads
Comparison units work when the reader has a genuine physical intuition for the reference object and when the resulting count is small enough to picture. Nobody can picture 240 hectares, but most people can picture a few hundred football fields laid out, roughly. Beyond about a thousand of anything, the comparison stops being a picture and becomes a second abstract number.
They mislead in two specific ways. The first is dimensional confusion: describing an area as “the length of 400 buses” sounds meaningful and means nothing, and doubling a length quadruples an area, which comparison phrasing hides. The second is spurious precision, where an approximate reference is quoted to four significant figures and inherits an authority it has not earned. - Saying “football pitch” without saying which code. One is fixed by rule, the other varies legally by a third in each dimension, and the difference is large enough to change a story.
- Quoting an approximate unit to several decimals. Converting exactly from a guessed constant does not make the answer exact; it just moves the guess further from view.
- Mixing dimensions. Lengths compare to lengths and areas to areas. A comparison that crosses between them will read fluently and be wrong.
- Using a comparison that produces a huge count. Anything past a few hundred has stopped being a mental image and become another number the reader must take on trust.
- Assuming a reference object is stable over time. Bus models change, tower heights change with antennas, and the figure a source used in 1998 may not be the one in circulation now.
