Why no rate is hardcoded here
Tax rates differ by country, state, filing status, income band and year. A calculator that bakes in one jurisdiction's numbers is wrong for most of its visitors and becomes wrong for everyone the moment a budget passes. Every tool in this set takes the rate as a labelled input with an example default you are expected to replace with your own figure.
Marginal versus effective
The single most common tax misunderstanding is that moving into a higher bracket taxes all your income at that rate. It does not — only the portion above the threshold is affected. The bracket and effective-rate calculators show both numbers together, which is usually enough to settle the argument.
Self-employment is a different calculation
Contractors pay both halves of payroll tax and receive no employer withholding, which is why setting money aside per invoice rather than per year is the practical approach. Those tools calculate the set-aside directly. As with everything in this category, the output is an estimate for planning and not a substitute for a qualified tax professional.
